For me,the bottom line is this,I will get the phone reguardless what is in it or how fast it is.I need a new phone and it will be at the top of the list at the Verizon store.

Hahaha I'm usually against going to a specific phone's forum to ask them about their phone. It'd be like going to the iPhone forums and asking them how good multitasking is :P

Yeah I guess that would be bad form (I wasn't offering to do the dirty work myself).

But seriously, it's partly because I'm lazy, and partly because the few Bionic owners here are probably looking for something better, and I want to know if the GPU performance is a part of it ;)

Keep in mind an HD Prime w/1.5GHz 4460 has a 50% faster CPU and a 26% faster GPU, but it has to manage 78% more pixels as compared to the qHD Bionic w/1.0GHz 4430.

So general operation should be quite a bit faster, but gaming may(?) be somewhat slower. I don't know how ICS will affect speed other than the new optimized browser.

EDIT: It's been pointed out below that games don't need to run at a phone's native resolution. So running at a lower qHD or WVGA resolution will allow games to run faster, especially w/the higher clocked GPU. Nice!

not sure if anyone noticed this line in the slashgear article that was poted earlier.

"Pin-for-pin, the new OMAP 4 chip is compatible with its predecessors, which means that manufacturers using the older versions face little work to swap over to the OMAP4470."

could that mean that it could still be possible for that chipset in the final hardware if TI managed to get enough out in time? And yes I realize that the article states the chips will be ready 1H 2012. Just throwing it out there that maybe Google was able to persuade TI to make these for their Nexus and that's why there was a shortage of 4460's for Archos and the possibly the reason why it isn't been in anything yet.

Unlikely.

Supply chain agreements, production schedules ahead of time in that chain, logistics of parts shipments, sign-off by QA, not to even begin to mention contracting oversight....

And that's just skimming the list.

All I can say is more "Prime" please!

You like to crush our hopes with your reason, don't you?

Sorry if this has been asked already, but

Does anyone here have a Bionic or Galaxy S? If so, could you comment on the performance of the PowerVR SGX540 GPU?

Games have always been smooth on the iPhone 4/iPad, and my Droid X couldn't really handle things like Fruit Ninja without hitches. I'm interested in whether or not the OMAP 4460 will be able to handle games like Madden or those FPS 3D games

Bionic here coming from an OG. Honestly, I don't play too many games, mostly browsing and such. However, since getting it on launch, I haven't had one FC and it's never skipped a beat. The 3G/4G issue can be a bitch, but other than that, this thing is fast. If the Prime is any faster, I'll be a happy camper.

If the Prime is indeed SAMOLD+, then you have more subpixels - but less processing due to PenTile algorithm, and then there's the issue of what the DSP and image processing blocks are like it in because they'll play a role as well (along with the video scalar) - along with any new tricks they've pulled for glue logic between it all (if any) and bus speed changes (if any) (memory pipelines are something the Samsung processors are good at, especially the Hummingbird).

Agreeing with you and amplifying that it's not necessarily easy to predict the comparison - lots of factors there.

Not at all. On the contrary, imagine the fun you can have with me if I'm wrong. :)

It's not just tricky language when I opine that I could be wrong, I often am. ;)

Hi all been keeping up on this thread for some time now and finally registered! Still have the OG Droid and became VZ upgrade eligible today so they need to release this phone already....

Han, any update from your sister?

The cool thing with the SAMOLED screens is that it doesn't use any backlight behind black colors, so you'll have deeper ink-black color AND battery efficiency!

Argh! I need official Prime news now!

What does "imminent" mean again?

earlymon, all your technical mumbo jumbo is giving me a headache! jk brah. I just hope we get more news about the Nexus soon.

These events remind me a lot of the rumors before announcement of Nexus S. A lot of people were saying it was going to be dual core, cutting edge technology etc. It was hype up a bit before the launch and people were quite disappointed with the phone spec when it launched. However many got over and learned to enjoy the pure Googleness of Nexus S.

I think this phone also gotten over-hyped from rumors and hopes. Another factor was the introduction of the iPhone 4S. We're all a bit envious of the power of the SGX534MP2 and wanted the next Nexus to be the standard bearer for the Android army and not be inferior to the 4S in anyway.

There are definite advances with the Galaxy Nexus or whatever it's going to be called. First of all the Super AMOLED HD screen. Finally we'll have a screen that's close in pixel density to the vaunted "Retina" screen made for Apple by LG. Not only that but we'll get more resolution, 1280x720 vs 960x640, a 50% increase on a larger display, 4.65 inch. A lot better for media consumption and games, I think. A 4460 @1.5 GHz is nothing to sneeze at either and ICS will be optimized for this chip. And don't forget the blazing 4G LTE speed that a certain fruit company has not seen fit to support yet. I think there many things to thankful for in this phone. The only major worry that I have is how SGX540 @384MHz will able to handle high resolution.

This is going to be an excellent, excellent phone. Perhaps not the specs of our dreams but better than anything else on Verizon right now. I just hope they don't drag their heels on releasing it.

i, for one, am going to be very sad to retire my OG. this was an absolutely revolutionary device, in many ways, and i absolutely punished this thing and got every ounce out of it! i hope i'm wrong, but no matter what phones are released, i doubt that i will ever be able to say that i will have owned "another" revolutionary device.

Though, I do not have an OG, I will be sad to see my X go. And I haven't had it nearly as long as you OG Droid guys.

Exactly, HuskerKate. I have said it before and still maintain it: Once retired, my beloved Droid will be cleaned and placed back into her original box (with all the accessories) and stored away for years. And decades from now I'll be able to show my future grandkids the phone that started the Android revolution for the masses.

Games are designed to run on the lowest specs they can get away with. Any current GPU should comfortably play any game for the next two years.

+1 Insightful. You're right, these aren't PC games where you can expect the serious players to spend $$$ upgrading video cards and CPUs, so phone games have to be targeted to the stock hardware in use.

"Android fans, set forward your alarm clocks next Monday: the rumored Nexus Prime is rumored to be launching on October 19!"

October 19th is not a Monday. Just thought I'd point that out

And 19 is a prime number, so that must be it!!

After the November 3G/4G fix, you might see no real reason to upgrade.

I have a question regarding cloud services, and hopefully someone can shed light on this.

Suppose I have all 6 Star Wars movies "in the cloud". And say I'm going on a plane trip to California today. Can I download the movies from the cloud, store them in the phone somehow, view one or two during the flight, and then put them "back into the cloud" upon arrival?

Or is it constantly streaming like Netflix?

Yes you can....and the original file that is stored in the cloud remains there so you don't have to upload it back to your cloud. You will just save a copy of the video file you want to store on the phone for the trip and then delete it when your finished with it.

Same with the music files on Google music...you can save a play list and the songs in is and cache it to the phone for your trips and your good to go!

I do this all the time when I travel to places that have sketchy cell coverage. That's the beauty of the cloud services!
