Enh. I don't think it's false. I can understand that with all things subjective, your personal mileage may vary but in general I think it sticks around because there's at least a grain of truth in it.
I had to help a non-tech saavy friend pick out a phone recently. (She was coming from an older blackberry and that was the extent of her exposure to smartphones.) For her, after she'd had some hands on time with both it was a no brainer to go with Apple. She automatically knew how to find and navigate to what she wanted, while using a droid however, she had to frequently ask me for directions and tips.
So, clearly, two similar stories with two completely divergent outcomes. Not saying your opinion is any less valid, given your experiences it may not (or appears to not) hold any water with you at all. That's ok. In the end, both devices do the same things (access the web, make calls, and take pics) it's HOW they do it that's different. I make my recommendations to friends and family based on my criteria and you on yours.
Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply old people are dumber or know less in any way. I was using my clueless nana as an example of someone (possibly one of those in their 20's and 30's who suck at powerpoint) who isn't very good with technology in general, and computers specifically.
