Is the Prime REALLY that great apart from ICS?

I've been doing a lot of research lately, getting ready to switch from my iPhone 3gs.

I'm on Telus and the HTC Amaze looks absolutely Amazing, but all i've heard is that I should wait for the Nexus Prime.Taking a look at the specs, apart from the HD Screen of the Prime the specs seem very similar. The processor is roughly the same, and if the Prime has a 5mp camera, then the Amaze will likely excel in that aspect too.

Is the major selling point of the Amaze the fact that it runs ICS? And if so, do you ever expect HTC to update to ICS in the near future?

Welcome to the forum.

Eventually the Amaze should receive ICS, the problem is that HTC will take a long time to do it because they add Sense before they update the software. IMO, a HTC phone is never better than a pure Android phone because Sense only slows down the system. Sense is the reason I will never own an HTC phone unless I can root it and install a real OS

Is it possible to root it and install the basic Android OS?

I do really like Sense though. The widgets really seem to make using the phone an easier, cleaner experience.

Your only hope on that front would be a custom ROM and if you don't have any programming experience you'd have to wait for someone else to port stock android to the device.
That's what's so great about the Nexus series: you get the new features from Google immediately without having to wait.

I'm curious to this as well say if nexus gets the 4460 processor, and we don't know anything about ICS but if galaxy s2 were to get ICS. In estimation would the s2 beat nexus by a chunk or little bit?

Assuming ICS boosts and fixes bugs and all that stuff we don't want.

Nexus are generally considered developer phones.. they have the latest version of the OS so developers can get their teeth into developing for it, but aren't aimed to be the the top of the spec list (Nexus S was in the same position.. it wasn't spectacular hardware wise but was the first gingerbread).

The advantage that gives is it's trivially rootable, gets all the updates first and runs an unadulterated version of Android... hence lots of none-devs bought them too :p

This phone seems to be more consumer targeted (more press hype etc) but I'd still expect Samsung to bring out another phone based on it quite soon (SGSIII perhaps), with their branding and tweaks etc.

Too right, the genius of the phone is instant updates and no bloat

If the HTC camera is anything like my incredible than I would bet that the Nexus camera will blow it out of the water. As an amatuer photographer I can assure that megapixels is the single most overated spec on a camera BY FAR.

I can set my SLR camera to 3 megapixels and I will take photos that will SMASH an 8megapixel picture from my phone.

I would give the camera edge by a longshot to the galaxy.

I hope your right!

As far as the camera goes....I just don't think its going to be all that wonderful! If Samsung would have thrown the SG2 cam on board...You would hear no gripes from anyone...The fact that they penny pinched is beyond me.

Trust me. I know I am right. Whether the camera is good or not has ZERO to do with megapixels. It isn't even up for debate. It's all marketing. My peers on the camera forums laugh so hard at how gullible the public is when it comes to camera phones.

I don't know much about the SG2 camera but from what I have read it is superior in every spec other than megapixel which is BY FAR the least important. And it's NOT even close.

I don't know a while lot about cameras. I had the incredible and it took good pix. Then I got the bionic and these pix are awful. I just noticed all ether hype about the shutter and stuff but nothing about how good the pix actually look.

The incredible does NOT take good pics. For a 2 year old camera phone it takes decent pics but compared to the Iphone 4 they were TERRIBLE. Guess which one had more megapixes?

Did you ever try and take action photos with the Incredible? Next to imposible. Even if they were just barely moving it was sometimes tough.

HTC is not the best when it comes to camera phones.

Incredible took decent pics for that period in time. No, not perfect but very good! The iphone 4 and 4s are the best cameras available, can't compare to an almost 2 year old HTC phone...

I love my incredible in most ways...except for its crappy, horrible, horrendous camera. Great that you like it, but I hate it. Huge halo effects at night, WAY too bright flash (or at least the sensor) The only time pics are okay are in broad daylight. Even then its a bit soft.

I know a little about camera tech just because I like to dabble but I'm no expert.

As for the Nexus, I can't wait to buy it. Are the specs GREAT? No, they are very very good though and like everyone said, its got everything I want. Fast, great features, lots of extras (barameter, nfc, etc) and pure, sexy, sleek ICS. Mmmm

Camera is a concern of mine but not because of the megapixles more the sample photos I've see have all be some what blurry . I'm not a photographer but I do like to take a lot of pictures and the only camera I own is my cell phone. I thought my Incredible took decent pictures but awful video , the Thunderbolt is slightly better especially at night and with video honestly if the Nexus can give me equal quality to the thunderbolt especially at night (single LED Flash??) I'll be happy .

I can't wait to get this phone

The incredible's flash seems TOO bright to me. My friends turn into ghosts!

I think the phone is still the best Android phone out there when it is released, but it is nothing ground breaking and will be quickly be surpassed when the next gen processors end up in phones in 2012. I think it is at the cusp of old technology with the new stuff arriving shortly.

If this phone released 4 months ago no one would have said a word. However, with all the new SoC coming next year the Galaxy Nexus will quickly feel outdated.

Just my 2 cents. It will still be an amazing phone.

haha man I dropped the Incredible the second the Thunderbolt hit ..

I'm pretty sure this is my next phone , I have two upgrades coming available next month and another in january so even if the phone doesn't do it for me I can sell it and get something else. I'm gonna check out the Razr also . The support the Nexus line gets is just worth it to me.

Funny thing is about a month ago I was saying I wasn't gonna get a new phone till next summer then I start seeing all the new phones coming out and I look at my Thunderbolt and am just not happy haha

Your right I was a little hard on the incredible. With motion and at night like you said it's a drag.

I did see some pictures of the Prime that weren't great but there are some in a thread in here that have some shots next to the Iphone 4gs and it definitely held it's own.

We won't know until we see it though.
