verizon and marketing

im new to the smartphone game. the first super i got was the thunderbolt when it launched. ive been following the gnex thread for 2 weeks now. whats incredible to me is vzws marketing people. i dont know how old they are, or what are there credentials, but they seem like a joke

i recently saw a commercial for the driod bionic. there was some sexy girl in leather fighting this robot.. for a long time. i didnt know if it was some sci fi show, or possibly a fetish show because it was late at night. then at the end it says droid bionic. wtf?

now, you have the razor, the gnex, and the vigor all coming out very soon. yet we are being withheld info on two of those, as the razor is getting all of the hype. why? why is there not a commercial advertising their whole line? why do they not have some little 35 second ad like this

"VERIZON WIRELESS introduces THE THREE MUSKETEERS
-want the slimmest, most sleek smartphone in our arsenal, backed with free motocast and webtop? The droid razor is for you
-can't want to indulge yourself with the newest andriod update, the ice cream sandwiches? try out the samsung nexus, for the purest and fastest google experience
-listen to a lot of tunes on your phone? the htc vigor features beats audio by doctor dre, giving you an uncomparable audio experience

all three phones feature blazing speeds with their dual cores and are powered by VERIZON 4G LTE, THE FASTEST NETWORK ON THE ENTIRE PLANET"

i just want to know if verizon marketing has always been this bad. the fact that they have chicks with leather fighting demons instead of hyping up their 4g network makes me want to puke. people are getting paid to come up with these awful ideas

lol you really dont get marketing do you?

that chick fighting the evil robots as she removed the pieces of robot she needed would spark the interest of teenagers who like power and speed, hence why she is almost a ninja(without the mask) fighting a robot and winning, so in a sense its brilliant marketing, because it appeals to younger generations who like the action scenes, and fighting.

It got your attention, didn't it? Mission accomplished.

it got my attention because of how irrelevant it was. the advertisement didnt give me any interest in a phone or in verizon

im actually shocked as hell two people are defending that ad though. and to the guy saying its brilliant.. no offense, but i cant help but laugh at that. surely i cant be the only one on this forum to think this?

ok, what sells?

sex sells
beautiful women sell
violence sells
action sells
alcohol sells

hence why this ad is brilliant, doesnt need to talk about a phone, or else what is the point?

it made you look at it, regardless of how irrelevant you thought it was, there were ALLOT of other people who didnt think that.

how would you have done that ad for the bionic?

in all honesty i dont think you could do a better job than what they did.

i see what youre coming from but i dont think any of that stuff is honestly going to influence many people to buy a 300 dollar phone on a 2 year contract.

id think, with this phone in particular, hyping up how fast it is and its dual core, whatever else the phone does, and how its on verizons 4g network.. the biggest, fastest and best network in america (something no other company can claim) would be an ad that attracts more customers

is there really "A LOT" of other people who think the ad didnt suck? really? am i alone on this? all the commercial did was use google to find the name of the hot chick

I didn't even think she was that good looking. I really don't like the little poof in the front that so many "stylish" women are doing. I think it accentuates their forehead, and makes their entire head look mishapen. Just my .02

Verizon's DROID branding/marketing was useful back in the days of the original Droid when nobody knew what Android was, and Android was an underdog. Now? I think Verizon's marketing is overwrought and misses the mark. I would like to see Verizon focus less on specs and robots and more on what these phones can do in real life. This is why Apple is able to sell tons of products. Apple commercials show real people doing real-life stuff with Apple products. I'd like to see Verizon take a more mainstream approach with their Galaxy Nexus advertising. Not everyone is interested in killing robots with their phones. Just my $0.02.

They want us to remember two things: the words "Verizon" and "Bionic." After that, it's just another phone to 99% of the TV audience. Talking about its features after that would either make peoples' eyes glaze over, or be so general that the device couldn't be differentiated from ten other phones. Selling a top-tier phone needs to be about selling an experience or an image. Thinking of all those dozens of ads with the animated flying Droid, I can't remember what device or network they were pimping. But I sure remember the half-dozen non-detailed Thunderbolt ads I watched.

Verizon probably isn't going to market the Galaxy Nexus as heavily because the phone is only exclusive for Verizon for a few months. Verizon can only use the phone to differentiate from the competition for a short time period before.

Samsung will be the one who markets the Galaxy Nexus, which will probably have a better marketing campaign than Verizon will ever have.

Successful companies have failed advertising campaigns all the time. Just because they are experts, doesn't mean they can't make mistakes.

Watching the Bionic commercials, you couldn't tell if they were selling a phone or a bag of Doritos until the very end. Even then, the phone wasn't memorable.

Focus on the phone stupid. Having some sexy women and robots doesn't answer the question, why I should but this phone over the competition. For the original droid, the message of the phone was that Droid does more than the iPhone. It gives a reason to buy the phone.

If they were selling the features of the phone, sell the features. If they are selling the style, sell the phone as being cool and hip instead of a nerd fantasy. I can't relate to Verizon's commercials and I am the target demographic.

you didnt know, but you knew when you finished the commercial and said, wow, all that for the bionic? then the bionic was on your mind and possible topic of conversation to your friends of why the commercial was the way it was

It's all about the target demographic, the emotional response they're trying to get from those people, and the product they're trying to push.

G-Nex is a developer phone, and one that will be non-exclusive. Makes more sense for them to push a "broad audience" phone... and particularly one that's exclusive to the carrier. One where you have to get a contract with THEM to get the product...

...hence the whole reason AT&T wanted exclusivity with the iPhone.

In any event since when have commercials supposed to be relevant to anything and factual, as opposed to just something cool? Case in point:

D Rose & Adidas

I, too, am in the target demographic. Male, under 34, etc, etc, etc. AND I need a new phone. The Bionic commercial did absolutely nothing to me but reminded me that I want to see Natalie Portman in another movie. The phone was completely forgettable.

Contrast this with Samsung's commercial about the SGSII, and I was instantly jealous that we in Verizon wouldn't be getting it.

I dont think verizon is going to do much advertising like they didnt do much with the iphone. I mean google is already advertising the phone across the web. Everytime I do anything google related I see a picture of the new nexus. I think that will be the majority of advertising will be done through google and samsung.

If the Nexus ships with no VZW bloat, there will probably be no marketing by VZW and all by Samsung and Google. Seems if the Nexus ships as a true Nexus (how else can it?), it will probably be unsubsidized. Since some info hints at $300, either it has some bloat, or VZW have caved in to Google.

If so, GREAT for VZW consumers that want the Nexus! :)

I agree the galaxy s2 commercials were pretty good and it even got my gf interested in wanting the phone and she usually keeps a phone for 2+ years and just upgraded this summer. Samsung knows what people want and did a great job with their advertising.

The other nexus have no bloat and were subsidized by the carriers.
