Help Gingerbread/OTA issues Thread

Greetings all,

After I got my official Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update on my Incredible I noticed that it does not fully shutdown and start up like it used to. It boots up in about 4 seconds and shuts down in 2 seconds. Previously it took 5 times that long. After I turn it on, I can go on the internet and view the last page I was viewing, and in the past it went to my homepage (google) and currently I can also view my other internet windows I previously had open prior to shutting it down after I turn it on. I believe this problem of not fully shutting down is messing with the phone, it is acting quirky and as a result I am burning though my extended battery in 3/4 of a day, in the past it would last two days.

It almost seems like the phone is going into hibernation mode and not fully shutting down and rebooting correctly. On restarts sometimes I can see my home page from the previous night at the time when I shut it down, this flashes about one second after I turn it on. Sometimes the phone loads the red page that has all the specifications of the phone and sometimes it doesn't, ditto for the droid announcement voice. I tried the battery pull and the new restart function to no avail. I really don't want to do a factory reset, but this update is killing my battery. Can an update be rolled back or is there anything else I can try? Phone is not rooted.

TIA

Thanks for the reply, but I do not have a power option under settings on my DINC. I do have a battery option under about phone menu, but nothing about a fast boot. I did notice under my battery left app that it has been over 81 hours since last boot (when I last did a battery pull). I have had 4 charging and power cycles since then, not sure what is going on.

Wow...you got a real OTA 2.34 update. I thought they had been killed off. Here in wester NC there hasn't been any evidence of updates. I got my DINC in the first shipment and so far its Froyo only... Anyone else getting updates this late in October/

There is definitely a 'fastboot' option somewhere in the settings that you will need to turn off to keep it from doing this...

fwiw i finally shut my phone done last night and my up time was over 500 hours (something like 22 days)

Didn't you know us hillbillies in the mountains of NC are the LAST to get everything?
(Just replaced my outhouse with a real john!)

Seriously, I've had my incredible almost a year and haven't received any info about the update. I haven't heard of any good reason to do it, so I'm happy.

I've rooted, so I'd have to unroot, backup, etc - sounds like a big pain, before an update.

Got the OTA update message about an hour ago...did the download to reboot. When it attempted to auto boot....I noticed the animation for the Droid eye was extremely fast...then it stuck on that screen for a good two minutes...then went to the unlock screen with a black background and no touch imput...can't do anything with it. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a visit to the store tomorrow and a LONG call to customer service.

So far I have installed several versions of gingerbread including business gingerbread and they all broke my voice search feature. The voice works when everything is quiet but in a car it fails to work. 2.2 and 2.1 had no problem with it working in a car. Any version of gingerbread work with voice search in a car? What about OTA 2.3.4? Thanks.

I got the update a few hours back. Everything appeared to be fine till it said "rebooting" but it never did reboot. It just stuck on that screen. I was able to manually restart my phone, but now I'm back to square one. Can't seem to force an update either. Did they pull it or something? Any other methods?

Hello, the update is trying to install on my phone but I'm not feeling safe about updating.

Is there a way to refuse it without getting the nag screen forever and ever? If it would fix the Low On Space problem I'd download but otherwise I don't want to risk it.

(I asked about the Low on Space fix in the other stickied topic, right now I'm just asking if I can refuse Gingerbread).

Thanks.

(Edited to say: Due to other problems I'd done the *228 roaming update recently, and turned on wifi, I think that's what initiated the Gingerbread update, in case anyone is wondering why they didn't get it yet.)

Brettlewis,

It took over 15 minutes for my phone to do the entire upgrade this morning. When it hits the droid eye during the reboot, it will sit there for over 5 minutes with no indication that it is working. You just have to be patient. It will eventually complete.

Got the OTA last night. Everything was fine until this morning when the dreaded "low on space" notification appeared. I cleared the cache memory and while that usually works like a charm, it has no effect this time around. I guess I can keep using the phone with the notification? We will see how long it lasts...

Something similar happened to me. The update appeared this morning. I tried to start the update, but it said my battery was too low. So I charged it to 100% and tried again.

I went to Menu -> Settings -> About Phone -> System Updates. I hit "Install," and then it said "rebooting in 10...9..." etc. When it got to zero, the install screen disappeared, and the screen said "Your system is currently up to date" (which is what it usually says). Nothing else happened.

I waited 20 min, then turned the phone off and on again, but clearly no update was installed, and there appears to be no way to install it now. It still says "Your system is currently up to date" in the System Updates screen. Under "Software Information" it says I have Android version 2.2.

Weird. I wonder if I'll get another shot at the update.

I just had the upgrade to the latest version. And before I could delete my browser history by selecting each website individually and being able to delete them. Now after the upgrade, after I do that, it still shows up in the upper search bar as well as going into most visited websites.

Any fix to this?

I've had my phone for a little over a year. Yesterday I received a pop up on my HTC Droid Incredible for a system upgrade. I agreed to upgrade right then and there to let it do its thing. After a few mins it started to reboot itself....but it never stopped. It always went as far as the first HTC Incredible screen and then rebooted itself again after every 20 seconds.

I thought it was the battery so I finally took it out [which stopped the rebooting] and let it charge overnight. The battery life seems to be full but when I tried to turn on my phone again it did the same thing it was doing constantly rebooting itself.

I've been to the HBoot menu and tried FASTBOOT>BOOTLOADER which gave me a glimpse of 'Loading: Error Image'[something along those lines]
I've tried selecting 'RECOVERY' and still no luck.

I'm trying to avoid Factory Reset because I have a lot of contacts and other data saved there. I'm getting annoyed at it. Any ideas??

Both my girlfriend and I noticed the same thing. She uses the voice recognition all the time to send a quick message in the car (yeah yeah...) but in the car for whatever reason it just doesn't "hear" as well - you almost have to yell. I tried again when I parked and it recognized just fine.

Are there any settings / adjustments that can increase the sensitivity?

I cannot get Gmail to sync. I also have the low memory issue.

My upgrade showed up about 1am EST.

You probably can't sync gmail BECAUSE the low on space issue. Try going into manage applications menu and clear the cache and space from some of the larger apps (note that that will erase the data stored on the phone for that app).

My Incredible asked me to update this morning, and boy I was excited. So of course I pushed yes and had it update immediately. Well it counted down all the way to 3 then the dialog box went away. No shutdown, no reboot, no update :( So I go to settings and about phone and system updates and it tells me I'm fully updated. How do I get another chance to update it? Though with all the negative posts I am wondering what the positives are for the update if anyone can answer that as well. Oh and not sure if this has anything to do with it but I did have the low space message when it asked to download but I have tons of space, what is up with that?

I got the update around 2 am. The only problem that popped up was the low memory warning. I am getting so tired of it. I uninstalled some apps that I wasn't using and cleared my cache and some data and it finally went away. Does Verizon recognize this as a problem now? If they do, are they doing anything about it? I would like to have a phone that works without worrying that my next email will cause the warning to reappear. The warning seems to lock out a lot of functionality of the phone like new texts and emails. Has anyone had any luck working with Verizon to either get a new phone or at least some store credit towards a new phone?

Yep, clearing out a bunch of data got things sorted out. I have been having syncing issues before the upgrade as well as some Google Voice latency issues. Guess I didn't realize all the ramifications of low memory.

I have had excellent luck getting Verizon to help me out when phone issues come up. If you are a ways out
on your next upgrade, I think you could get them to spot you a few months, or provide some kind of a loyalty discount. The key for me has been to keep my cool and jump through all of their troubleshooting hoops.

So today (11/15/11) I got a notification on my phone to update the software and I let it update and set it down and didn't look at it for a while. A little while later, I go to look at my apps, and everything I downloaded onto my phone and stored on my SD disappeared. When I go to look at my SD card it shows the names of the apps in a faint shade of gray, but when I click on them it tells me that the apps are not valid and do not exist. Also, all of the icons for any apps that were on my main screens are not there and just have the andriod symbol. It is like everything on my phone got wiped out and I am PISSED!!!

Is there any way to undo the update or get all of my apps back from my SD card.

Please help! I use my phone for work and need many of my apps back!

Thanks!:)
