FCC again - they are like public communications utilities, but they are not public communications utilities (I've been at this too long - there's a correct legal expression for this and I just blew it - but the idea is correct).
Did you mean "public utilities commissions" (PUCs)?

Since I have finally stopped lurking (been around since about page 80 gather info for my first smartphone--my work B---B---- not counting), a question. Since I will be upgrading from a feature phone and have some contract issues to deal with, too, I figure I will have to use a VZW store, not make an online purchase.

Given the concerns about what sometimes happens to new phones in the stores, any suggestions on finding a good rep at a good store? I had a good contact at an area VZW store years ago, but she is long gone. :(

I never had any problems with reps doing anything to my phones. These geeks on here are just paranoid thats why they don't let anyone touch their phones.

Back from dinner. Wow, I missed less than I expected. Not that I expected the phone gods to swoop down and deliver a 32gb internal storage confirmation, but you never know. Now to swoop down upon a beer... *heads to fridge*

Well, no need to be harsh. ;) Some people have had bad luck with reps.

Personally, I have had great experiences, especially from one of our Radio Shacks.

I like to know it's all working before I leave the store.

Everyone's mileage varies. :)

We sort of just store shopped until we found someone polite and cheerful. That criteria always seems to work for me.

Haha.

Are store reps with smartphones like Help Desk staff for office computer support? After an unhappy incident some years ago, I always like to be around and watching when folks come to work on my office PC.

I am not as knowledgeable with smartphones, but I feel like my skepticism might be carrying over. ;)

Still, I am happy to hear of your good experience. Thanks.

so the person that tethered on sprint for a few minutes got a text from sprint immediately after tethering? wow, i thought if you did it occasionally and didn't spike your data usage it would go undetected on a network as large as verizon.

I have never had a problem with reps at verizon. they never tried to "play with my phone" all they do is take the plastic off and make sure it is active and everything is working before I leave. I would rather do that then have to come back or call and deal with the issues then.

All this talk about tether got me wondering about another feature I have been using a lot.... Free talk minutes with gv. The last version of the app that routes all calls to the same google number is version 0.30 and therefore I can add it to my friends and family for free minutes. I haven't updated to the newest version because the new versions do random routing to different numbers. I wonder if google voice being integrated to ics means I can't use the old app anymore.

It's the beginning of Verizon's plans for an Orwellian state of affairs. Big Brother....erm, Big Red...watches all.

yea but there must be millions of verizon customers! if someone's data isn't spiking i don't see where a red flag would be raised to look any deeper into the person's activity

im here as well. its just me and my 4 month old son tonght, my wife works night shift in the neonatal ICU at a hospital here in nashville, so nothing really to do but troll the gnex forum lol

were you surprised by the text? was it just a warning?

It was super friendly - Sprint never got all worked up the way Verizon did.

About a year ago, I would tether from time to time in airports, then decided - why am I bothering? Just did everything from phone and was done with it.

Added it back sometime later this year, just in case. Well, emergency medical situation came up (long story, very boring) so I tethered for a few minutes, no choice.

After that - friendly, cheerful, SMS about the tethering plan.

Thinking it was a fluke, a week later, I connected for 60 seconds, refreshed a web page, and signed off. Bingo - same message, right away. Very friendly sales pitch, something like - Say, if you enjoy tethering, did you know we offer a great hotspot feature for your phone?

So - I don't pretend to know how they know or how Verizon rolls - just saying, when in doubt, learn before proceeding.

Again - Sprint has a reputation for extreme leniency and not caring for casual users like that. Sipping lightly from their fountain is not treated the same as trying to hog the hose, so to speak.

Last I heard, Verizon is having none of it.

But with Sprint going into much deeper debt for Apple, thier subsequent change to charge for tethering, and charge the most out of all the carriers, I'm sure thier past leniency on tethering is over.
