proceed with caution, don't break your phone I will not be responsible. I will also be gone for the next three weeks (wedding) so I won't be around much to answer questions.

DO NOT FLASH TMOBILE or VERZIZON ROMS without the conversion zip

The APN set up is odd on our phones and you may need the specific apn info:
Name: ATT pta
APN: pta
MMSC:*http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN type: internet + mms

It can also be found on xda

Method I used
[HOWTO] ROOT T-Mobile SGSII via ODIN -- Updated Recovery - xda-developers

Worked wonderfully...

Newer skyrocket specific
[ROOT]| CWM | ODIN | SGH-I727 Skyrocket - xda-developers

And

[ROOT] [ACS] Skyrocket Easy Root - Windows/Mac/Linux - xda-developers

took less than 10 minutes.

Return to stock

That is exactly how i rooted it, the trick however is to make sure you have your usb drivers setup for the phone.. the way i did it was installed KIES from samsung..

so:

1) download and install KIES: What's new for Software & Manual SAMSUNG

2) download doomlord's zip exploit, extract it.

3) run the 'runme.bat' file (i would run it from a command prompt so if you get errors you can scroll up and see what happened.

----------troubleshoting:

if something goes wrong, the most common problem i found was with the usb drivers.....

from a command prompt , goto the doomlord folder, go into the files folder.

type "adb detect" and see if your computer sees your phone. if it does, you should be good to go.

IF IT DOESN'T (see below, this is what it will look like:

"C:\Documents and Settings\user\Desktop>adb devices
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Desktop>
"
then

-disable anti virus
-restart computer
-reinstall kies
-uninstall android sdk?

IF IT DETECTS IT, you will see it appear under the "List of devices attached" - and from here you should be good to go

I'm planning to buy this phone. I've never rooted before.

Should I wait for the ICS update before rooting?

Thanks

there's no reason to wait for ICS before rooting. in fact, it's possible you can get ICS sooner using a custom ROM if you are rooted.

i'm really new to all this, but i've found that if you follow the instructions, rooting is simple and quite worth it.

I will wait until something more stable comes out for these phones regarding clocking.. right now it seems alot of guys are having massive battery drain issues with the overclocking.. Im sure it will be a matter of time before there are endless mods for this phone. I really don't think 1.83 will be stable?

I have yet to run more than 1.7 stable.

After one day on the newest kernel I can't say battery life was any worse than norm... we will see

* nevermind i got it!.. had the wrong setcpu downloaded...... works great at 1728ghz.. just did 6400 on the antu benchmark@ 1728.. rooted with stock rom overclocked.
