Will it be possible to port Beats By Dre to the Gnex or is it hardware driven and not software?
For obvious reasons, they keep the specifics on what constitutes Beats Audio on HTC phones a secret, but the general consensus seems to be that it's a software EQ that activates when the phone detects a set of Beats earbuds is plugged in. You should be able to achieve a pretty similar effect by using Beats earbuds and using a music player with a built-in EQ to bump up the bass, and I'm sure someone has analysed a Beats phone to figure out the exact settings you'd want to use.
FWIW
Audiophile opinions aside, Consumers Reports rates a number of Beats earbud and headphone models as recommended.
It's not that they're inherently bad gear, but for what they cost, you can get much better stuff. This is as much a matter of math as anything else—if you have a set of Shure earbuds that cost $150, that means that $(150-profit margin) worth of R&D, construction, labour, etc. went into building them. For a $150 set of Beats earbuds, you're looking at $(150-profit margin-price of licensing the Beats name and tech) worth of R&D, construction, labour, etc.
In other words, in order to achieve the same price point while still paying for the Beats license, the manufacturer is going to have to cut back on something—profit margin, R&D, construction, labour, or something else. And given that Beats gear is made by Monster, creator of the $120 S-video cable, it's a bit difficult to imagine that profit margin is where they would choose to skimp.
This is not to say that Beats are garbage or anything (if that's the sound you like, then go for it!), but there are ways to get the same or better sound for much less money.
On-topic: It's awesome to see the community that's grown around the release of this phone

I've been lurking and reloading every couple of hours to see if there's any news, and can definitely empathise with the folks whose wives have wondered what the big deal is.
