Root [CDMA] Anyone want to a help a newbie

Lurker
This was actually part of my hello post to start with, i just got caught up talking about it, and as i said there, thanks to DonB i fully rooted my evo3d (gsm) with s off and su permissions.

I was actually really skeptical due to being so new to the android scene, but i know its worth it. (even just to get the soundhound DEMO off my phone, after buying soundhound i couldnt uninstall the demo because rogers decided to lock it on there im guessing)

Although ive only had my htc for a month and a half, im quickly learning.
I have softmodded a half dozen iphones, psp's,wii's , so i can get around.. but the info for roms/kernels/backups....pretty much everything after the root is what i am currently hunting.

I downloaded rom manager and titanium backup, i have made a backup with rom manager, but i am confused on how it would help during a brick/semi brick? or how it works? , i assumed they were would be a safeguard after successfully rooting (im trying not to think iphone but its hard) After jailbreaking an iphone everything is there in one package waiting, root is alot different.

Any and all info is welcome, i have never been in the droid scene until recently.

*edit* will a sprint rom work on a rogers phone? , i havnt seen any rogers optimized roms, im pretty much not touching roms for the time being, still sketched right out haha.

Thanks everyone,
Mike

Hey there EetBum (cool name). looks like you've, dug in deep already and have some toes wet in the adroid mod world. Congrats! and welcome to the AF!!! I've joined and glad i did!

one thing i would like to mention is that rom manager is really not the best way to go. it tends to be very buggy and can cause issues. it is best to do everything in manually in recovery. on the htc og evo, it would cause a whole lot of issues that could have been easily avoided if they just used the recovery rather then an app.

++ 800% - best to do it manually through your recovery.

Welcome and enjoy! :D

i was led to believe that you can recover through flash with rom manager? , i usually check out every button on a new toy, but i have yet to even look at the recovery menu, i remember going there once when i was in the root process.

Is there a backup option in recovery?

I have decided not to flash roms anyways, i like sense, i just hate how it wont work with my wiimote, sigh*...But i would still like to backup and have that *safeguard*
No matter what it is, its always best to have a confirmed backup. iphone...psp..wii's...xbox... etc etc...

Also if anyone would wanna name some recommended apps, tweaks or anything.. i love knowledge.

Thanks all ,
Mike

yes you can do everything that rom manager can do in recovery. i would also think about switching recoveries to twrp:[RECOVERY] [EVO3D] TeamWin Recovery Project (twrp) v1.1.1 [10/05/2011] - xda-developers it is much better then clockwork mod IMO.

as far as apps go i would get setcpu (only if you get a custom kernel). kernels will give you better battery life and performance. you can under and over clock your phone with a custom kernel. setcpu will set the cpu speeds among other things. here is a great guide on setcpu:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/210253-setcpu-guide.html.

also get titanium backup. this will allow your to freeze and uninstall bloatware (if any, as most custom roms have them removed). also it will backup your apps and data so that when you flash a new rom you can then just restore from titanium backup.

adfree is a nice app to have.

And if you do decide to flash, try the Cleanrom 2.9 it is based on sense without all the bloatware and is a great and stable rom
