A little OT but it really bugs me. Why are people's two and one year old smartphones on their last legs?

We pay at least $200 for these phones and as in my case usually more (full retail). THEY SHOULD LAST LONGER!

I have old flip phones that are 5+ years old and they work fine. I realize these smart phones are more advanced hence more things to go wrong but technology is also more advanced so why the big step back in longevity?

I just feel If they only allow us to upgrade at a subsidized price every two years the equipment should be able to make it.

I know I will get flamed but if I owned VZW I would allow you to upgrade every six months at a subsidized price. If you did upgrade it would subsequently reset your contract therefore locking you in longer. WIN WIN :)

Quoted for truth.

Do you guys know if the Asus Transformer Prime will ship with ICS, or will it just get an update at some point?

At risk of angering a Mod... (technical web opinions and facts followed)

Friendly Mod Announcement For EVERYONE :) :)

Perhaps unlike other forums, it's no big deal to offend a mod around here.

There are never any consequences to it.

First and foremost, we are forum members just like you. Secondly, we have this temporary mod gig we're into to give back to the community on this site in return for all we've gained being a part of it with you.

We know and never forget which of those two come first.

So where our normal posts are concerned, feel free to be amazed at our brilliance and wish you could be us for some posts and feel just as free to see us for the bazootie-heads we are when we post something all whacked-up or wrong.

Because just like you, we're liable to make posts in either category and not know which is which until we get feedback. ;)

But in any case - the only time we go from being a regular member to full-on mod is when we square away evil or make these little announcements.

And that thing I said about no consequences over a technical or social disagreement - believe it. If we have too good or too bad of a history with any individual up for mod review, we simply recuse ourselves and let another mod handle it.

Making any mod action personal - or unfair - against any member is absolutely unacceptable around here, and if you think it's happened to you, alert Phases at any time, that's your fully supported right.

Never a need to walk on eggshells around any of us. Reminds me of some Bob Dylan lyrics -

I'm just plain and common, too, just like him and the same as you, I'm everybody's brother and son, I ain't no different from anyone!

PS - Except when evil rises, and who wants that? Nobuddy. So just be excellent to one another. :) ;)

ICS has so many new features that incorporate features from apps I have already paid for. This volume control will replace my Audio Manager app. Kinda sucks but that's one less app I will have to put on my phone.

What other app's features are now built into ICS?

Here's what volume control + looks like

Very true story that happened to me this morning. I had a dream that a guy GAVE me a BNIB GNex for absolutely no reason. I open it up, setup my email and got everything together for daily use. After going through all this, I put the phone down as if it was my droid x and walked away. Immediately after, I realized and remembered that this phone had ICS so I ran back over to it to play with it, picked it up and before I could swipe to unlock, I woke up. :-( Can I sue Verizon for killing my dreams? I woke up with really hurt feelings! lol

Why will you get flamed?

Anyway, I think it depends on the user because I've had the HTC Incredible since April 28, 2010. My Incredible is actually faster and better than it was 6 months ago and even 1 year ago thanks to maintenance and flashing better Kernels and ROMs.

I could make this phone last over 2 years no question with no slow down.

Since it is a smart phone and not a dumb phone, it is more like a computer and requires maintenance and care. And I'm not talking about cases and zip lock bags - it's more on the software end.

Two things I do at least a couple times a week is wipe my Cache and Dalvik Cache in recovery - I find if my phone starts doing anything weird or seems laggy this fixes it.

If you don't take care of your PC, look how much it slows down. Just gotta take care of it and it will be just as fast 1-2 years later.

I also don't have a screen protector and still have no scratches.

I've read speculation that:
1) Writing an 8megapixel file takes longer, and would kill the current instantaneous shutter on the Gnex.

2) Megapixels are useless if you don't use a good CMOS sensor. Megapixels are kind of like 'X' designations on hats. Is there a difference between a 10X Stetson and a 20X Stetson?

Unfortunately most phone users don't really understand digital cameras and in a way the only ones to blame for this whole megapixel bigger is better and you will enjoy it fiasco are the camera companies. Back in the day it was important when you were talking 1mp vs 3mp but you start jumping over 5mp the importance expotentially drops and the sensor and optics become the driving factor on good pictures becuase no matter how many megapixels you have if your sensor produces tons of 'noise' the pic will look like crap. I can go on and on about this but the bottom line is unless you plan on making wall posters w/ your camera phone 5mp's vs 8mp's mean nothing and optics and sensor means everything.

Obviously, name calling when serious is way not ok - I just had to toss that in. ;)

http://venturebeat.com/2011/11/22/ice-cream-tablet/

Although Lenovo was reportedly rolling out an Ice Cream Sandwich-powered tablet by the end of 2011, Asus is saying its newest offering will be the first to feature Ice Cream Sandwich. While the tablet will ship with Android 3.2 (a.k.a. Honeycomb), the manufacturers say it will be upgradable to Android 4.0 immediately.

Steven,

Please take some time off as soon as you get your Nexus.

Sincerely,

The Forum

As a follow up to my post it seems that USB host support requires a custom kernel.

I am sitting on a two year old Eris that technically works fine, and I can't honestly say that, judged by its own standard, its performance has suffered much in the last two years.

That being said, the fervid pace of both software and hardware development makes any phone seem obsolete after six months or so... and us here waiting for the GN is probably making our old phones seem worse than they are.

Now, if you have dropped your phone or something, that is a different issue.
