Quick instructions on how to Unlock The galaxy nexus?

I remember reading it somewhere but cannot remember, somethign about connecting phone to your pc, then command prompt and run some commands like fastboot oem or something, but need a program? I just wanted a central location where I can find the simple instructions on how to unlock it. I'm assuming we should do this before even booting into ICS for first time right? Thanks in advance

Read it a couple times and let it soak in. It's really not complicated, SA has just tried to provide as much information and explanation as possible and, in the process, has made it appear a little overwhelming.

If you read carefully, you'll see that the steps are actually laid out one by one, with not much thought needed.

Without all of the instructions, I'd summarize unlocking the bootloader as:

- Download file package
- Extract file package
- Install drivers (they were in the above package)
- Connect your phone to your computer and boot it into the fastboot mode
- Use the command prompt to issue the "fastboot oem unlock" command

That's it. Bootloader unlocked.

Hmm i like ur summary but it's still weird when you get into each step and then cross referencing with rooting. So for JUST unlocking, you download the manual galaxy root package? And do steps A thru J? and do not do anything else? sorry to sound like a noob, I'm sure i'm not the only one, I'd rather ask and get yelled at then stay quiet lol

At the point that you have issued the "fastboot oem unlock" command, you are done unlocking your bootloader.

Most people want to unlock and root all in one step, but if you're just unlocking so you don't have to do it in the future, you don't have to worry about any of the other stuff - pushing the insecure boot.img, pushing the root binaries, none of that.

Thanks, binary visions!

Yeah, there's a lot of stuff in the root guide...like most things, it a process of refining... I tend to make sure that all of the little steps are included for those that might not be familiar with these processes. I even found another USB driver link over on XDA this morning that we might need to use (for those of us on MS Windows--if you have Linux or a Mac, things really should be pretty simply for you).

I'll put an overview / summary section at the top of the thread, too, similar to what you did in post #5.

Let me know if I can make it any clearer or simplify things (I certainly don't want to inundate people, but I don't want to leave anything out, either).

Cheers!

screenshots for driver install. i'll be taking some tomorrow for install because a lot of people have had trouble with the device being recognized when in fastboot mode.
otherwise, the process it very straight forward.

Here, here, mrvirginia!

That is awesome!

USB driver issues are always the bane for folks using Microsoft Windows :(.

Clearly, I can't do that (take screenshots) myself until I get my little guy ;) :) (was/am planning to do so...).

Thank you for that.

Cheers!
