Siyah Gingerbread kernel (v2.x)

Wow 2.3 is fast! My boot time went from 15 seconds to 5! I don't know what it did, but I find this very nippy. I guess it varies for each user and depends what they have on, but this is the fastest Siyah I've seen. Works well with GDE.

Could be a liitle while before we see any more work done on Siyah as its developer, gokhanmoral, is taking a well earned vacation:-

I will be away for some time. I'm in istanbul now and i will be away from my sources for some time. I dont think it is possible to compile a kernel on my phone, at least for now :)
I'll be back.
Meanwhile, if u have problems with v2.3 (i dont), v2.2 is in my blog.

Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

See original post on xda:-

[KERNEL] SiyahKernel v2.3 - "One kernel to rule them all" (SAMMY&AOSP ROMs) - Page 1215 - xda-developers

So it seems that all work on some of the most popular kernels...

Siyah

Dark Knight

Ninphetamine

Void

has ground to a halt for the time being.

(of course there's always others such as Lulz, SpeedMod, RAGEmod, TWD, etc. if you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms)

Perhaps not all bad as it will give me time to evaluate them and tweak. :)

After 3 days on Siyah 2.3 I found that my battery life was significantly worse than 2.2i. By my estimation, about 20% less life on average. Also, the governors that I favour, smartassv2 and lulzactive, were very jerky when using my Launcher Pro app drawer, despite trying all the various schedulers. This is not the case with 2.2i.

I'm sticking with Siyah 2.2i because I like the BLN and dual core support it offers not to mention boot animation.

are you saying you dont get all this working with 2.3 butty?

2.3 seems to be ok for me. On a par with 2.2i certainly.

No mate... it all works on Siyah 2.3. It's why I don't switch to a lot of other kernels that can't offer that. :D

Did you try v2.3 before or after you tried void?
Void deleted system/etc/init.d so there may have been left over rubbish in there.

Surprisingly, after re-installing Siyah, there is still no init.d folder. I thought Siyah would put one or two scripts in there, but apparently not.

I tried Siyah 2.3 after Void.

Funnily enough, I have a screenie of my init.d folder from 3 days ago, when I was playing, "Show and Tell", with Shoutgun84 on the CheckROM v4 thread. See here:-

Hi all,

Does the underlying firmware eg. Cyanogenmod affect the choice of governor and scheduler within SiyahKernel?

If anyone has done any testing of governor, scheduler combinations for SiyahKernel 2.3 (with Cyanogenmod 7.1 if underlying firmware makes a difference), what works well for getting good battery life assuming my usage is web browsing, sms, phone calls, Google maps and I don't play a lot of 3d games?

Thanks,
Mike

I'm afraid that you will see, if you read through this thread, that there is no such thing as the best kernel with the best governor and best scheduler, for everyone. Even on the same ROM.

It depends on your ROM, your app's, your usage and your particular CPU. It really is a case of trying it for yourelf.

For more details, see here:-

Hope this helps. :D

+1. only a few versions of siyah have worked well on my phone. You just gotta try em and see

For me, Siyah 2.2i, is a big improvement on 2.3.

Based on my average, medium-heavy, usage and needs over 3 days, I was getting only around 16-18 hrs battery life. Now I have switched back to 2.2i I am back to circa 24 hrs, not to mention that it is a lot smoother for me.

Before anyone posts that they get 72 hrs of battery on their SGSII, I did say... for my, "usage and needs". Also, the reason I want more than 16 hrs is that it gives me some leeway if I'm away for a full/long day (18 hrs+) and means that at the end of that day I do not have to go into Power Saving mode or have to fret about a bit more web browsing, music or making calls and texting.

I guess that 2.2i is the new 2.2beta6 for me. :D

Siyah 2.4 is up! :D

Looks like I spoke too soon in my previous post.

"Changelog:

Disabled arm topology and sched_mc
decreased the sensitivity (not too much) because of a non-scientific feeling that lowering it too much causes random jumps to 500MHz.
some platform-dependent merges with galaxy note sources
some stability fixes (at least it did not crash on my phone for the last two days)
BFQv3 & it is set as default I/O Scheduler
fixed ntfs automounting
"

Happy flashing!

UPDATE

Silky smooth on my Launcher Pro 3D App Drawer scrolling using smartassv2 and vr. :)

BLN working :)

HD video recording and playback OK. :)

2nd Core Dynamic hotplug OK. :)

Over to you Sydney99! ;)

5 days and nothing new flashed. Kinda enjoying the peace.......

Might sit back and watch the fall out first;)

Way too early to tell but first impressions are good. Is quick and maybe a little smoother than 2.3. I'll have to wait and see how the battery performs.

Downloaded and flashed!

Well nothing new so far (works fine on GDE), but I found 2.3 to be unusually thirsty with the battery (as ironass did). Here's hoping for an improvement!

Glad Siyah is back to the normal numbering. Was getting worried with 'i' and 'p' variants :P

Siyah 2.4 is up! :D

So much for gokhan taking a break.
Well it was 6 days, so I suppose we would have been on v5.9 by now otherwise!

Early signs are very good.
I use TW4.5, which as always performed extremely well on all kernels.
Go Launcher was usually the issue with me with siyah, but this seems very good too on v2.4
I'm using conservative governor, 100-1200

Now to see how this sucker performs overnight......

I too have been having issues with the battery on 2.3 so I'm looking forward to flashing 2.4 tonight and seeing how things develop.

Syd, check your deep sleep on void.
It wasnt going into deep sleep enough for me. I couldnt pin-point when this started. Perhaps it was after CheckRom v4 or when Maps was upgraded to v6, I'm not sure, but its worth you checking it anyway butty.
