Help Dead on Arrival?

georgy

Newbie
Got a brand new LTE from Rogers in Canada.

Opened the box, started the phone...everything worked fine.

I opened the back cover and took out my sim (phone was already off but charging) and left it there.

When I came back about an hour later, the phone was very hot and completely dead...no lights when plugged in, not powering on, not able to soft reset...absolutely nothing.

I got the phone from Best Buy, so I'll go in try to exchange it tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone know what caused this? Is it possible that something got fried from re-charging without the back cover on?

I doubt removing the cover would cause this. If charging without the cover were potentially damaging I would think there would be a cutoff switch to prevent it. In any case, it sounds like it was just a defective phone and/or battery, but best to just return the unit for a new one.

Best Buy will not exchange it for me and Samsung will not honour their warranty, since I am not the original owner (I bought it for cash from someone who resigned their contract and got it for free). I am extremely pissed off about it...

Is there anything that I can do to try to revive it?

Funny thing is that when plugged into USB in the computer, it's recognized as a "generic hub". Could it still be alive?

Okay. You originally said you got the phone from Best Buy so I assumed you were the original owner. I am not surprised that you won't get warranty coverage. Best Buy would need the original receipt and warranties of contracted Samsung Phones would be covered by the carrier.

It could be that certain circuits are still active, if the phone won't mount at that point and you can't power on, that sounds pretty dead to me. Get the person you bought it from to exchange it with the original receipt.

I actually have the original receipt. However, the guy that I bought it from refuses to exchange it as he thinks that I am scamming him in some ******ed way...

Theoretically, should the phone power on without the battery if plugged in the wall?

I was thinking of buying a new battery to find out if that's perhaps the issue.

I tried turning on my Captivate with no battery, plugged in and it wouldn't power on. I would guess the Skyrocket's circuitry is similar.

Any more details from prior owner...custom rooms kernels?

If u hold volume up+down and press the power button (release power when phone vibrates)

What does it do if anything

Well it was literally a brand new, sealed phone. I opened the box and tested it before I paid for it, so I'm thinking maybe I broke it somehow? I just don't see how...

I tried the hard reset (up/down/power together) and nothing...

Still have not tried a different battery. Will make my way down to Best Buy tomorrow to try it out. Other than that, I guess I'm SOL, which sucks, because I paid 500 bucks for this thing.

You have proof of purchase and the phone has a warranty

1. Try a different best buy
2. Send to Samsung

I would hardly say you are sol but the circumstances are not ideal

Unfortunatelly, after speaking to Samsung, it turns out that the warranty is not transferable to a new owner. So I can neither replace it personally, nor send it for repair to Samsung.

On a different note, I tried a new battery today and the phone is still dead.

I am trying to help bit something is fishy...

You have the receipt and best buy and Samsung won't help?

Doesn't add up. If you have the receipt then by all rights they really can't say you didn't buy it. If the receipt shows another name then it was a gift ;)

Thanks for trying.

Here is how it goes at Best Buy: I go there and ask for a replacement or warranty work. They say that it has to go through Rogers, nonetheless.

They call up Rogers and Rogers ask for my address and personal info, which I don't know since it is not mine.

The problem is that the phone was received as a "hardware upgrade" when the guy resigned a 3 year contract (his phone number is on the receipt, which is also his Rogers account).

When I called Samsung, they told me the same thing: "call up Rogers because they have to handle the repair."

I will see if I can find you a better number for Samsung. They take in warranty repairs all the time

I was thinking that may be the reason you are having difficulties.

Blame Canadia

Bastards, I know!

OK, I convinced the previous owner to exchange it for me tonight. He wasn't too happy, so I didn't get a receipt this time.

So no warranty of any kind for me anymore. Samsung better not let me down again...
