It is great being the test subject! (not really)

Re-rooting was easy this time, since I know what I'm doing. Now have to fix up lightflow so it doesn't cause problems. If that was truly the issue, I'm good to go (again).

After you unrooted the issue was resolved it sounds like it was a software issue. Before you flash anything I suggest making a backup in recovery so you can just restore it if you need to.

LOL, its like anything else, its confusing until you've done it for the first time.

I've included a lot of detail to help the folks that need it...many will consider it "TL;DR" (too long--didn't read ;)).

I am actively updating the first post to include what I hope are simpler instructions.

Please let me know what you find confusing and/or how I can help make it less so.

well MY first probelm is with installing the android SDK....which i want to attempt to develop stuff on android but have no clue where to begin so consider me stupid, BUT I followed all the links to unlock the bootloader, I have adb interace working for my phone but i can't get the android SDK to install..
 
and those links bring me to a wiki page so not going to get any help there.....I should just look around AF to get that installed first i guess I spoke too soon

Sorry for the delayed response...just finished adding the ClockworkMod rooting instructions.

I know this / these are not the full instructions for installing the SDK, but I wrote-up initial notes for getting the adb utility (via the platform-tools) in this thread:

Just going through the Manual / Standard Method section should at least give you a framework for installing the remainder of the SDK if you so choose / need to.

The Android SDK and its screens and menus change so frequently (I just wrote those above instructions about a month ago) that its really best to use the instructions in the main Android SDK | Android Developers web page.

Well, soft-booting doesn't change anything on your phone...you could soft-boot CWM 'till the cows come home and your stock recovery will remain intact.

Flashing CWM will allow you to access ClockworkMod when you don't have access to your PC and the fastboot command.

For example, I don't use ROM Manager, but I have a great little app called Quickboot that you can use to reboot into recovery (provided its already flashed)--plus it does other stuff, too.

Ok, I have a problem with the clockwork method... When I rebooted into clockwork. My computer tried to install new drivers and failed. Then when I tried to push the .img it said no device found. What did I do wrong?

Edit: Also, I used this guide to unlock my bootloader. When I tried booting into fastboot like you said to with the button combo, it simply would not work. So I used the command:

adb reboot bootloader

Is this incorrect?

Edit 2: I got frustrated and just did the Superboot method. However, I saw some people on XDA were having the same problem as me, so maybe it's worth looking into?

Do you mean when you tried to push the su.zip file (there wasn't a need to push the .img file...)?

Exactly which command / step were you having problems with?

I'm guessing that you might not have had the USB drivers that would work for both adb and fastboot. I'll put a step / note in the instructions about re-confirming that you have "adb devices" and "fastboot devices" connectivity for that method to work.

Hmmm...pressing the volume-up and volume-down toggle and then pressing and holding the power button until you see the fastboot screen has always worked for me. You do have to keep holding all three buttons until the fastboot screen appears (you'll get a few bumps/vibrations just before then, but keep holding until you see the little Android guy laying on his back).

Well i did get the SDK setup and I did unlock my bootloader, then i ran the superboot.bat for windows and my phone is hanging at the google loading screen as he mentioned it might. Just need to wait say 10 mins then do a battery pull? That long enough you think?
 
I also had the problem of trying to move the su.zip file to my sdcard. It kept telling me it could find my device. I would always check the fastboot devices cmd and it was there... Did the superboot method and is now sitting at the Google screen

I did a battery pull after a few mins and it loaded okay.
 
Is anyone else having problems, after the superboot install, with wifi? Everything is working on my phone except wifi. Not wifi TETHER (they have a new build of that that works, btw.) But actual wifi.

I can connect to the network, get an IP address, but can't ping the gateway. I've tried multiple different networks, turning on/off mobile data, everything. (Mobile data works fine too.) I'm stumped on this one. Going to try to un-root one of the phones and see if it's some sort of hardware issue or if it's actually caused by rooting.

Let me start by saying i am a noob to all this so be patient with me :-)
I am unlocking and rooting my gnex and im stuck on rooting.
I was able to unlock with "fastboot-windows oem unlock" the phone gave me the worning about voiding warranty and all. Next was rooting by doubble clicking
"install-superboot-windows" but its not working.. what could it be?

Is your phone on the fastboot screen when you click on install-superboot-windows?

yes, and it does say in the bottom in red letters that its unlocked so i dont know what it could be. i downloaded the superbooot file like 6 times and none of them do anything. does it matter if it doesnt say'install-superboot-windows.bat'?
 
The download should be a zip file, you need to extract the contents of the zip in order to use the bat file

downloading 'boot.img'...

this is what it says when i double click. its been doing this for 3 hours
 
Should we be doing the Soft Boot or Flash?

Why is there 2 options? Which is better? Got a new Nexus..

And can't I put the SU zip on the phone before rooting and not have to push it..

Just flash or Soft Boot CWM and then go straight to choosing zip..
