Root What's the best kernel to use?

I apologize if this seems like a stupid question, but there are just SO MANY kernels and roms and all sorts of new stuff for me to play with. I'm completely new to all of this, but I want to learn it all. I have MikG 3.0 flashed and Aggressive Freedom v0.9 kernel. So what's the best kernel out there?

I always suggest aggressive freedom. Others prefer chopsuey.

WIth kernels its your mileage will vary. What works great on my device may absolutely suck it up on yours. You really just gotta try them all out.

The thing with kernels though is they need to "settle". Performance always is pretty bad the first day or so. Leave it be for a few days before you pass judgment on it.

Agreed.

Here are your choices

Gingerbread Sense
Freedom (Aggressive, More havs, Less havs, stock)
Chop Suey
Stock HTC Kernel

Gingerbread AOSP
Stock Cyanogenmod kernel
Tiamat (3.3.7 is widely considered the best AOSP kernel, bar none
SavagedZen
GoDm0de (this never really came out of beta)

Theres also poonsense and golden monkey for sense, but the two Miz and I listed are the most common
I always forget about Golden Monkey. It was the first one released and it was pretty much never updated. Or updated just at the very beginning, but it's been ages since anything has been done for that kernel.

And I think poonsense is just the stock kernel with working HDMI mirroring isn't it?

Rxpert said it best give it a few days and see how it goes. Kernels are like music what moves me doesn't necessarily move you. I have had great success with Tiamat 3.3.7 with Xplod Rom and Good success with Freedom more with Swag. I love my Xplod setup that I currently have. I also use Go Launcher and have shortend my screen list from 7 that is default with Sense to 3. I don't run a lot of widgets however I am always checking in here and maybe downloading some wallpapers or apps.

I wouldn't count out poonsense even if it is similar to the stock kernel. With the stock kernel I get pretty atrocious battery, when I flashed poonsense I started getting much much better battery. I'm talking unplugging at 9am when I go to class and not putting back on the charger until I go to sleep at 1 or 2 am.

I still have yet to switch kernels, I tried deleting some programs I don't use that always seem to be running, and seeing how the phone lasts (I think there may be a problem with my battery calibration, I keep running Battery Calibratation, but get wildly inconsistent results).

Is there a way to go back to the CM7.1 kernel if I'm running CM7.1 with Tiamat 3.3.7?

Yep, just wipe cache and dalvik cache and reflash the CM7 rom that you have on there already. It will rewrite the kernel. If you flashed any other fixes, like GPS, custom font or whatever, you will need to reflash those as well.

Argh, so that's basically redoing the whole process again (i.e. I need to backup all my apps/settings and reload afterwards)?
