Help Error: "Check for update is not available" anybody else?

RadioZero

Newbie
for the past couple of days, when i check for system updates i keep getting this message:

"Check for update is not available at this time.

try again later."

this happens over the network and on WiFi. it happens every time and just started a couple of days ago. anybody else getting this message?

my bionic is stock, not rooted.

hmm, happening to some but not others. my buddy says his is normal as well. i have done a couple of re-boots and a battery pull over the past couple of days and same message pops up.

oh well, i will stay tuned to see if there are others getting the same message. thanks for the replies.

I was getting that message. I was able to fix with a factory reset. Annoying but it worked.

thanks. i did a factory reset as suggested and it fixed my issue. phone now checks for updates and gives me "your phone is up to date" pop up.

now going to spend the next couple of hours putting everything back on my phone. ugh!

Here's something for your consideration ...

I had a problem like this 1-2 years ago on the Droid X. It was when Verizon was starting to release the Droid X OTA. That OTA was released incrementally around ghe country over a week or so. My region was not yet released. Some of the other regions were.

I took no corrective action. When the Droid X OTA was released in my area the test told me it was there and I installed it.

I suspect that you can probably get this a few weeks before the release to your region. There is (of course) no way for me to know for sure.

Doing a factory reset seems prety extreme to me.

If other people in my city were downloading the Bionic OTA and I was getting the error ... I would take corrective action. Otherwise I would just wait.

My phone is doing this now, too. Although my wife has a Bionic as does my sister and cousin and as far as I know they don't have the OTA update yet.

It was happening to me last week a lot. It comes and goes. Make the request ... get the message. Wait a while ... make the request ... get the message. Eventually you get a response. The response was always "up to date".

I am now on the 5.5.893 OTA. It showed up without me asking anything. It just showed up and announced itself as being available.

There is more information about the OTA distribution at ... http://support.verizonwireless.com/system_update/droidbionic.html.

I have been getting the same thing for the past 4 days. I even called Big Red. The tec didn't even know about the update. So you know how far that went.

I just read that to get the notification sent out from them you can't be "roaming" and perhaps you can't be on a "Wifi connection".

Are you not roaming and not on a Wifi connection ... for say an hour?

This doesn't make any sense. I was on wifi, said "Check for Update is not Available". Then I made it a point to stay off wifi, still says that it's not available.

In fact, it has been a long time since I have gone into the update section where it hasn't said "Check for Update is not Available". I hate that I am even saying this, but this phone has been more of a headache than I could have imagined. Between stupid things like this, having a terrible time with data connectivity, phone shutting off randomly, random notification lights.

I have stood by Android when almost everyone else I know has gone to Apple, now when we're together and my phone has no data connection for no reason at all, I'm thinking to myself, What a piece of shit, why the devotion to such a flawed phone/brand?.

Sorry for the rant.

I think what you are seeing is "growing pains" and none of your friends are experiencing the 4G-related problems that you are.

This is an ASSUMPTION on my part ... there seems to be a limited number of queries that can be serviced at a time when checking for updates. As a result you get the "can't check" response. Try it again a little later and again and again and eventually it gets through and will probably tell you that your phone is up to date.

The availability of the update is being pushed out to phones and people are getting it at different times. I have seen no explanation on why someone got it sooner than someone else. I did see a statement that you had to not be on WiFi and not roaming to get the announcement pushed to your phone.

Do people even know when they are roaming anymore?

If you want to step outside the production approach (I didn't) you could go to ... http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-bionic/438060-bionic-reference-terms-links.html#post3398984 ... and download the 5.5.893 leak provided by John Galt. He reports that it is identical to the 5.5.893 OTA that I installed.)

As for keeping up with your iPhone buddies ... you and I both know there is only one way to do that ...

I take ZERO credit for this info but try this:

Settings, Battery & Data manager, Data delivery, Social applications, uncheck Syn over Wi-Fi only and see if that helps. Don't ask, no one understands how it could possibly affect the update check, but, on another forum it worked for some people.

I appreciate the thought but it was already unchecked on my phone...still no GD update.

Sorry to hear that. Others have said (and you won't like this) that they had to do a factory reset to get it to work. :( I'm off the beaten path (5.7.893 and rooted) so I'm not much help there. Also, as far as the update goes, there are reports coming out all over the place of a new update...5.9.901. I'm still waiting to find out more about this and maybe a manual download for it so those of us off the upgrade path can maybe try to get ourselves back on...or find out just how screwed we really are. I hate locked bootloaders.

Any mention of the "Data Delivery" option right under it?

it's a pain but factory reset fixed the problem for me.

I guess if it doesn't come in the next day or two I will be forced to do that.

I just have a hard time accepting the fact that both my phone and my wife's phone (also a bionic) will require a factory reset to correct the problem (she is having the same exact problem).

Thanks

You could always grab the update manually. Not as fun as having it done OTA, but, it should work nonetheless.

Here is a fix from the Droid X days go to: Battery Data Manager>Data Delivery>Social Applications> un check Sync over Wi-Fi only. Power cycle the phone (turn off-turn on) and you should be back in business.
