Every time I would check for the update, all I ever got was Check update not available. Factory reset and there was the update. I don't know what holds it up. Just passing it on.
No I meant hard reset. It really is nothing to be afraid of. Sometimes its the best thing for a phone. Is it something to do to get a update, probably not. But with nothing else working, and my phone has never ran better.
To make sure I'm in sync with swhat you are saying ... you did a Factory Data Reset that removed all data and all parameters that you had set on you Bionic and then you got automatic notification of the 5.5.893 update. Correct?
You also alluded to having other problems with "nothing else working".
Now it is working and you got notified of the update.
It sounds like you had a throughly "messed up" phone and now it is back on track.
Most people would view a Factory Data Reset as a next to last resort and a pretty big deal.

I am also curious if you just did a battery pull, or took it to a verizon store and they did a legitimate factory reset? I had my device factory reset once (back in October) and am trying to avoid it as it is a pain in the butt getting it back to the way it was, but my update still has not arrived, nor has my wife's and we still get the same error message.
FWIW, I have done soft resets and a battery pull and it still has not helped the cause.
There was some confusion. 5.9.901 is not an OTA it is a leak and has not been released. (It may never be released.)
That is a completely false statement to make. It IS an OTA update that was pushed by verizon to some phones. It was an accidental release, but, nevertheless it wasn't a "leak". It was definitely pushed OTA. And in fact, some people are still getting it when they complain to VZW about data issues. It's likely that it will be pushed officially in another week or two from what we've read.Using these definitions, 901 is both a leak as well as an OTA (although not an official OTA) but not a soaktest.
Yea, I see the point. I personally view a "leak" as something that was never pushed OTA, even accidentally as in the case of 901. "Leak" implies that it doesn't have to be supported by Moto/VZW, whereas an OTA that was pushed, even accidentally, will be. And there's a big difference, IMO, between the two. A "leak" won't necessarily see an official update that supports it. Anything pushed OTA will have to have an official update even if they pushed it accidentally to a few customers. Not trying to complicate or confuse things but I want people to understand the difference and why 901, especially, is unique and in its own category. You can get 5.5.893 by going to Settings | About phone | System updates.
This is the only OTA that has been made available on the Bionic.

Are you still not running 5.5.893 on both your Bionics?

I had a different interpretation for the implications of OTA. (Mine was over the air and supported by Motorola Verizon.)
I removed the reference in the first message and in the future will refer to this stuff as "official" and "unofficial" as appropriate. These terms do not seem to be ambiguous. OTA in all future references will simply mean over the air.
Thank you for pointing it out.
I am of the opinion that if 5.9.901 was not pushed to you that your use of 5.9.901 is at your own risk.

Correct, both phones still not running 5.5.893. Both are still on 5.5.886 with error messages coming up when we go to check for update. I think I will have to do a factory reset. Are there backups for this sort of thing that make it easier to restore your phone to its pre-reset state?

Where are you located?
Did your Verizon store have any suggestions?
Thinking 145 times about the implications before ever doing it ... did "every trick" include a "Factory data reset"?

Wyoming Thom. Haven't contacted Verizon yet.... And no factory reset, my wife would kill me after all the work she's put into setting it up. I'll wait a bit longer..
Or, Download the thing yourself and apply it - it's digitally the exact identical file that was originally found and leaked over 2 months ago. I've even made a post about it and there should be links floating around.
Since it does not require being rooted or anything, you're welcome to try - but if I were you, I'd wait - b/c if your phone is not pulling the update for whatever reason, there may be something that might make ht update fail and leave you stranded. Since you're not willing to do a factory rest, you have three options - continue to wait, or take it in to the store, or get the update and try it yourself.

I didn't say I was not willing to do a factory reset. In fact, a few posts ago I asked about some sort of a backup to make returning the phone to normal a bit less time consuming. If there is something, I would be willing to use my phone as a test subject, do the reset, reload everything and finally see if it would update OTA like everyone else's.
