hey quantumrand...
pls help me out...my model was the 9020T and i was on the 2.3.6...i did a manual upgrade..the phone worked fine for 2 days and all of a sudden it stopped the cellular network...i tried using the phone using a different sim card but the same problem exsisted....

pls help me out...i was going through the posts in the forum and it looked like your the most experienced member..

i used these instructions to update

Downloaded and renamed ZD3PyN0t.zip to update.zip
Full system wipe including the SDcard, rebooted, then copied update.zip to the SD
Switched off and booted to recovery mode, wiped cache just for completeness.
Rebooted again into recovery mode. Selected update.zip
Applied the update, then when finished, went back to recovery mode and wiped cache and factory reset again.

It can be turned off but the space where it sat can't be used. So it's pretty pointless at this point, but a future update may change things.

I think you did not have time to get used to it , on 2.3.6 , on of my favourites was "gesture search" on ics I do not need this ,the search bar on all screens do the same work and more... also apps on apps is a wonderful feature ,before I used " swipe pad " etc . at activation corner ,usually accidentally switched on ,now placing similar apps on each other is very practical .the only thing i do not like is " phone" &"contacts" instead I use "touchpad dialer" . The rest just trying to get used to , welcome any ideas on other apps as well.

The OTA has started rolling out. You can wait for it to reach your device on its natural course, or you can update manually via the recovery console.

News (12/20/2011): Due to a battery life bug experienced by some users, Google has suspended the Nexus S ICS update. This means the OTA won't be rolling out to anyone else until they solve the problem. You can still update manually if you choose, using the files below, but be aware that the battery issue could affect you.

I personally am not experiencing significantly poor battery life. After 19 hours on battery with moderate use, I still had 34% left; however, my Awake time is twice my Screen On time, as described as the bug.

Work around for I9020A Models
A work around has been discovered that allows you to update your I9020A with the I9020T file linked above. It is definitely not for the faint of heart, and it is not confirmed as entirely stable. Follow these instructions at your own risk.

First, your phone must be rooted with Clockwork mod recovery image.
Factory reset and flash a stock 2.3.6 ROM for a I9020T (link to 2.3.6 ROM: http://android.clients.google.com/p...a25375426.signed-soju-ota-189904.1ada2537.zip).
Reboot (your radio won't be working).
Using Fastboot, re-inject Clockwork mod.
Flash the I9020T ICS update above.
Flash the UCKE1 I9020A radio (link to radio: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=687157&stc=1&d=1313224429).
Reboot, and done.


ICS Features

You can try updating with the "Full ROM" link. Do a Data Wipe/Factory Reset and wipe the cache from recovery first.

On mine, the top 5 (when the phone sits idle most of the day) are Wi-Fi (I let it stay on all day), Cell Standby, Phone idle, Android OS, Android System.

When I stream music with Google Music, Mediaserver gets up there. When I'm playing games or lots of browsing, the Screen gets up there too.

No, the update will not remove your apps, but the chances of there being a problem are higher if you don't do a data wipe first. Considering the fact that Google has put the rollout on hold, you may want to wait for the next update.

My phone works great with ICS I9020T ,but my wifes is having problems with no data connection and I cant get rid of the notifications by swiping them like I can on my phone. Am I missing something in the settings for deleting the notifications?

I had the OTa on dec 18.2011 in Kazakhistan Almatu , and my wi-fi did not work .At first ,some minor problems also emerged but removing some old app and installing back helped .I did a factory data reset .that did not help as well for my wi fi problem. According to the advise I got from forum colleges ,i decided to wait .
On 08.01.2012 I came to moscow , switched to a russian provider ,etc in 6 hours time my Wi fi connected started working .( Surpise ICS has a healing system inside .... still no new updates .
Overall I am very happy with the ICS, it works great ,now I use less apps then I used to because most is like in build . The only defect is that when I open the Gallery ,it sometimes can not open some pictures or videos and asks you to" try later"...... very funny ....I think this is because of some pictures/videos deleted still stays in the preliminary page. the battery life is almost the same as before ,I did not notice a decrease .

That's interesting. Perhaps those who are experiencing WiFi issues can try removing their SIM, powering on the phone (without a SIM installed), and then reboot and put the SIM back in. It would be an odd fix if it worked, but if it works, it works.

I'm also having serious wifi issues. Namely, the ICS update completely killed it. The Nexus S can't even detect my network. It's just stuck on "Turning on wifi..." Anybody else having this issue?

i had the same issue ,after the official OTA end of December no wifi ,I tried factory data reset did not help. As I was very happy with other functions ,I decided to wait for an update .On 10 of jan .I came to moscow ,switched sim card to local provider ,after 6 hrs use the wifi started working by itself ...now I have a super nexus S ...Using a few apps .everything perfect .as far as did not measure but the battery life is almost the same as before. beatiful new option is apps in apps function .I grouped similar used apps in one ,now only 3 screens and all fits .eg naim the main app mail ,inside 4 different mails hotmail+gmail+yahoo+exchange ....

Regarding the "self-healing" of ICS... I have a somewhat similar experience I had an issue with no cell network connection - if I try to make a call, I just lose it... However, in my case the problem "disappeared" when I talked to the network operator (TELE 2 LT) for a few times. At the same time I was moving around the country so to the 2G network and back to the 3G - I don't know if that had any influence, but it started to function almost perfectly (I do lose connection occasionally even in the city, but that became very seldom compared to almost permanent lack of connection before). The operator never admitted that they have been changing the settings of the network, but I suspect that could have been a case of some update or so. Anyway, I would not otherwise understand how the problem "corrected" itself (I still use the same SIM, I did not do any OS changes) or is there any chance of a "silent update" that Google has made to ICS?..

What is going on with this? I remember hearing that there was a bug with the update so they pulled it, but surely that would have been fixed by now. Has everyone else got their updates yet? I am with Koodo Mobile in Canada and still haven't got mine.

Sadly, no new news. It's likely that the initial update was just a soak test of sorts, especially considering the various bugs that showed up. Google probably has a relatively small team working on polishing ICS for the Nexus S, so taking a month or two to get things all squared away isn't surprising.

Now, if we start getting into mid to late February of if other phones start getting official updates to ICS first, something may be seriously wrong (ie: major issues that Google didn't anticipate). Rest assured, Google isn't going to abandon the Nexus S, nor will it let a completed ICS update turn to dust on some shelf. When the update is ready, we'll definitely hear about it.

I my self am from Canada, and Koodo is my Network provider. I am Looking forward to Google fixing various bug's ( issues) with the rom and once corrected then we will receive the update.

I guess it's good to hear that nobody else has it either. I was getting worried that Koodo was just not giving us the update.

Nothing for me either , im in the UK and on 2.3.6 , funny though ive just ugraded my wifes Galaxy s to 2.3.5 , it seems to be catching up on the Nexus s , it used to always be a few versions behind in the firmware but is getting closer now .

Hey, strangely enough you should be happy you have not (been) rushed to update your Nexus S to 4.0.3 as the most of us with this new version are having problems on Nexus S and cannot downgrade.
So enjoy your smooth GingerBread while it lasts...
And we are desperately waiting and waiting for the fixed ICS....

ICS works without a single bug for me on I9023. But there are some things I simply HATE on ICS, and I'd love to see Gingerbread ones return, like:

- Gallery
It's just ugly, there is no that cool sensor respond like on Gingerbread, and UI really doesn't fit in the fancy-schmancy Ice Cream Sandwich.

I would really like Gingerbread gallery back!

- Default Music Player
Gingerbread one was uber-simple to use, music was easy to find, picking a moment in song was also cool. Default music player on ICS is "Google Music" and it sucks. There is no send via Bluetooth option! I really like using built-in features on phones, without installing any other I need to add. But I now use Winamp

They'd better fix this.

- Blue theme over original orange/green on Gingerbread
When you are in a menu or somewhere, when you now choose some option and tap it, it turns blue. It used to be orange on Gingerbread, and it was really cool. This one is cool as well, but the old one just kicked ass! Also, icons on the top of the screen, like WiFi status and such used to be green, and they are now blue as well.

- Menu
This one is cool, but I'd still prefer the 3D effect on Gingerbread rather than this left-right swiping.

- Lack of 720p
I seriously doubt that Nexus S doesn't support this. Why the hell would Google advertise HD video on Nexus page in 2010 and let's not forget that Google employee took a 720p video with Nexus S before it came out. I also hate the lack of 16:9 shoot mode in general!

Other than that, everything is awesome.

I too feel like they took a step backwards in styling, but I wouldn't go as far as saying I hate any of the changes. At most, I'd say a slight dislike.

The app drawer thing you mentioned is what I would consider the worst change they made. The scrolling list seems a lot more convenient than swiping through pages. But it's not so bad, especially if it helps load the screen faster when you click the button.

The changes they made to the Gallery (as well as plenty of other parts of the OS) certainly feel like it has lost some flair, but I suppose it's also a bit more practical. Things in general feel flatter and more plain, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just different.

The color theme change I assume is just Google's way of keeping things fresh. Perhaps with JellyBean they'll go with a red on black theme, cycling through the colors of the Google logo. The green on black looked great, but blue on black looks just as good. Again, it's just different.

You can try installing an older version of the Gallery3D.apk. No promises it'll install, or how it will integrate with the camera the way the new version does.
