Root Rooting to solve the running out of internal memory problem (advice needed)

I have an LG optimus V I got about 2 weeks ago. I read the forums quite a bit and I just wanted to make a thread to confirm a few of my questions.

I am interested mainly in gaining more free internal memory space and basically moving every app I download to SD so I don't fill my internal memory and run into the current issues of not being able to receive texts or install programs. I use app2sd but that doesn't move everything so I want to use move2sdenabler and maybe move the davlik cache.

Is rooting a good choice for me just for this purpose? Also if I root with superoneclick will all my apps and files still be intact? I am not interested in putting a new rom on I only want the ability to free up more space. Do I have to put another rom on? Does putting on a rom essentially wipe the phone of apps and data?

1. Root your phone with super one click and install Superuser (ChainsDD is the developer) from the market
2. Format your SD card as two separate Fat32 partitions, make the first one the majority of your SD card space and the second like 1024mb. I used Easeus partition manager home edition because it was free and works on windows. To do this I just hooked up my phone to my computer and put it in USB Storage Mode then loaded up Easeus to create the new partitions. Make sure you backup everything off of the SD card to your computer first.
3. Install Link2SD: Once it is installed you can choose to move any non system programs including their cache to the SD card. Good for moving stuff like the facebook app that is very large. However you still can not move the apps like Twitdroid or Where because they are set as system apps. I believe you have to put a custom ROM in order to recover their space.

If you set your phone up this way you will not lose anything and you don't even have to flash a different recovery or ROM. If you do put on another rom yes you will lose all your apps. However, after you are rooted you can install Titaniumbackup and backup all your apps and settings to your sd card. Also if you flash a separate recovery you can make a Nandroid backup that backs up the entire phone and current rom.

This is going to sound dumb but, how to you reformat you sd card? I have the same problem and don't know how to get out of it. Dumb me being an IT person I didn't backup my SD Card just resized the partition to 8000 or the 16 GB and then it said they both had to be primary and I couldn't get the software to make them both primary so I made the second half primary with nothing on it. They are both FAT32 as directed but now my phone doesn't see the SD Card at all.
 
http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/364833-link2sd-you-tutorial.html is the tutorial. Since I posted in this thread originally I have stopped using Move2SD and App2SD and am instead using Link2SD.

The first two, don't move the entire app to the uSD. It leaves a sizable chunk on the phone, which adds up after a while. Link2SD moves virtually everything. You need 1-2gigs of space on your SD card to use as a 2nd partition, so I wouldn't suggest using this if you have a <4gb uSD. 8gb+ being optimal.

Try downloading the minitool Best Free Partition Manager Freeware for Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition. and then format the card using it.

I saw another post you had about this issue. Have you tried making the second partition smaller (around 1GB)? I don't know if that would help but 1 GB would be plenty big for your second partition. I made mine that size and formatted as FAT32 and both partitions are primary.
 
Will doing the above things void my warranty with Virgin Mobile? I don't want to do that. Also, does this work with the 2.3 Android system?

If you root your phone, you will void your warranty.

Also, what phone are you using because I assume its an Optimus V if your in this forum and that's a 2.2 device.
 
TG Blade is correct. Rooting will void the warranty.
If you do decide to root make sure you know what android OS version you have.
The 2.2 1 has the Novatek screen, the 2.2.2 the Hitachi.
The Hitachi screen is not compatible with the recovery in ROM Manager, and quite a few more recovery's and ROM's.
