I'm confused on how to do that. You said do step 2, but that is to unroot the phone. And I renamed 5059e5b6c5b2.OTA_Incredible_C_Gingerbread_S_VERIZO N_WWE_4.08.605.2-3.26.605.1_release_222220.zip to update.zip and nothing happened.Just do step 2 found here:
http://androidforums.com/incredible...ally-install-gingerbread-ota-s-if-rooted.html root is NOT required to do it.

I just set to factory default and now I have Gingerbread, but is there a way to root the phone now that I have it?Oops sorry, meant just step 4.
Did you boot into recovery like instructed and have the file on the root of your SD card?
Ok I did the HTC method, the stupid instructions could have told me what way to connect to PC, charge only, HTC sync, disk drive, turned out had to be on internet connection mode for some reason, windows was installing some things, now how do I root the phone? I was going through the steps and when it starting talking about the sdk manager then I ran into this error.Yes you can follow the steps outlined here:
http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/427344-2-3-4-root-downgrade-s-off.html
I can not emphasize enough that you need to follow the steps EXACTLY or you will run into problems.
Alternatively htc just added support for their official unlocking tool. It will allow you to easily unlock your boot loader and obtain root access by flashing a recovery image and super user.
HTCdev - Unlock Bootloader
The first method I linked is a complete root and unlock method and allows for easier recovery of a soft bricked phone, however the official HTC method will fit most users needs.
Scotty does a good job explaining the difference here:

It's working now but why won't the SDK manager install these files?
Yes, so I have to downgrade to revision 10? But you said you never used HTC's method, maybe you know someone else around here who used their method? Are you logged in as an administrator on your computer? It looks like you need revision 10 to be installed.
I found AdbWinApi.dll but not adb.exe, all I see in the sdk-windows\platform-tools is aba.
Not there, all I see in SDK Manager is SDK Platform not Android SDK Platform.adb.exe is another folder I believe. I looked at the instructions his morning but I kind of forget.
Why HTC got to make this so complicated?
I don't think I want to downgrade, would really like the HTC method to work.Head to the first lost I linked you too (the one for 2.3.4 root and downgrade) you will find a download for "mini adb" that should give you what you need.

To find adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll, look in \android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
To find fastboot.exe look in \android-sdk-windows\tools
