Root Confused with a question

byebyev8

I never rooted my phone. I have done all the ota updates. Now unrevoked has the download root software. After I downloaded the latest ota, can I root my phone with unrevoked? I don't want to do the root listed in the sticky. Seems to be a greater chance of screwing it up. Also, what is the safest root way? Don't want to lose features of the phone such as 4g.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!
so if you just accepted the latest ota then you have only one option to gain root on your phone. here is the guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/488901-rooting-hboot-2-18-dummies-guide.html. it is a little more involved but not much you can do now. fyi next time if you ever plan on rooting your phone, it is better to not accept any ota's. most rom devs will usually incorporate the ota into their roms and all you will have to do is root the phone and flash the rom and you will be updated.

both unrevoked and revoltuionary will not work with the new hboot that came with the latest ota. to check your hboot go to settings/app/uncheck fastboot then power off and press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader. at the top of the screen will be your hboot version.

if you have hboot 2.18 you will have to use the link i gave you earlier.

if your hboot is 2.16 or 2.15 then you can use the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

Damnit, have been waiting for a install root. Finally one is released and I screw it by doing the ota. I'm worried about using another OS. I have only rooted one phone and that was the palm pre. Are any of the after market OS as good as whats on the phone stock?

The majority of the roms you'll be able to flash after root are a lot better than stock.
The os isnt changed, just tweaked.

once you are rooted you will be able to flash any kind of rom that you want. i think the best rom out there now is mikg3.0. if you go to gingerbread guide i linked earlier, it has all the info on how to flash roms and make a nandroid backup as well as other info you should know. just go to the after rooting section and read.

if you need help rooting your phone, we are here to help.

Think its more of the unknown and lack of certain knowledge. I want to root my phone. What changes if any are made with just the roms? Where is the best place to get apps for rooted phones? I know some are in the market app. I'm trying not to sound like a noob.

hey we were all noobs at one time.

well most roms will have the bloatware removed and some roms have been tweeked so that performance is better. also you can flash custom kernels that will also help out with performance and also with battery life. the cool thing about the roms out now is that you will never see anything like this officially. i mean we have roms that have sense 2.1, sense 3.0 and sense 3.5 out now that the evo will never get. also we have ICS (icecream sandwhich, the latest android os, and that is sense 4.0) roms coming out now.

as far as apps go, it really is not like jailbraking an apple product because google does not restrict what apps they can offer. google is open source. the only thing that can get blocked is something that can violate the carrier's TOS (term of service). but there are root essential apps that only root users can use. great apps that you will need when you are rooted will be: setcpu
and titanium backup. there are plenty of others but those two are key in my opinion.

Mr ed lives close to me. We were talking about him rooting my phone a year ago. That way I can ask all the questions I got. I sent him some messages. I'm no idiot, the method is not idiot proof. Lol. I think my wait was a good move, was so worried my phone would become a paper weight.
