Question... I've got CleanROM 1.6 running now which updated mainver to the .11 release. In addition to your above instructions, do I have to revert mainver to .6 as the 1st step? Thanks for your help.

You should not have to. Hboot should flash an RUU with same mainversion or higher. you just cannot go backwards.

If your main version was 3.xxx then you would have to revert. But if its 2.01.605.11 or 1.02.605.6 then you should be fine to just run the .exe

has your hboot been updated yet? if not,you may be able to fix your main version and then run the RUU for 1.02.605.6,and let the OTA happen naturally. i dont think there would be much benefit of that,however,over simply running the RUU for 2.01.605.11,wich is now available here: RUU_Vigor_VERIZON_WWE_2.01.605.11_Radio_RS_0.95.00.1123r_3161E_9K_QMR_release_233635_signed.exe - download now for free. typically wifi is broken because of a module mismatch in the kernel. there are many ways to skin the cat,but because you also need/want the new radio,and a hard reset is gonna wipe your data anyway,running the RUU for the update is prolly the simplest splution.

It is the RUU program that wipes your data. The wipe is not something one does manually. So I would assume the answer is no as the RUU program doesn't stop to ask you if you want to wipe or not. It tells you up front it's going to wipe.

I use Titanium Backup (TiBu) Pro to backup my user apps and data and, after wiping, the TiBu restore process has brought the phone almost 100% back to the way I had it. Only additional steps for me were some system settings like establishing the SlideIt keyboard I use, turning off soft key vibrations, restoring some widgets, re-synching with Google to get back calendar entries and contacts, etc. I've had to wipe so often lately due to my trials and tribulations that I can get it done now in a few minutes.

UPDATE: PHEW! Luckily I saved the Unlock_code.bin file and the email instructions from the first time I unlocked. Using the old unlock code file worked !

just a word of caution using titanium backup to restore system settings. its prolly ok when restoring them from one rom,to the same rom(did that make sense? ) but when you start trying to restore system data across roms,especially across sense to AOSP you are asking for FCs and things not working correctly.

the safest way to use titanium is to only restore user apps(and their individual data)

Yup, I believe that's what I did... only user apps + their data. I have to spend a few minutes going back into Settings and restoring those settings whenever I wipe. (that sounded funny )

I'm still hoping for a 1 click batch solution but dying without root and willing to put my fears aside.

There are so many methods and tools out there that it is difficult to discern which methods work best. I did a lot of reading before I attempted installing a ROM and keep a log of important tools and methods. That way I can always refer back to how I did what worked for me, alternate methods for performing certain tasks, links to informative forum threads, etc.

I am unaware of any 1-click way to root, but it really is not difficult. You just need patience and some time.

First you have to install the HTC drivers on your computer so your computer recognizes your phone. See the sticky at the top of this forum for instructions on how to do various processes. Then you have to setup your phone to allow USB connections and enable Developer Mode. Then you have to unlock your bootloader which is performed at HTC's web site. Finally you need to install a SU (superuser) program (which can be done in various ways). After all that, you are rooted and you can install ROMs.

I believe every ROM requires that you install an alternate recovery and Amon Ra seems to be a popular selection. In order to install an alternate recovery, you need to download and learn the commands and tools that are executed on your PC such as adb and fastboot. There are tools out there that do some of the work for you, but I think it's good to learn the "guts" of what those tools do so you can help yourself should you get into a sticky situation.

That's a long-winded overview of the rooting process. I hope someone will point out any steps I missed.

As far as "idiot proof," I've learned that no matter how smart you think you are and how careful you may be, there's always an idiot in you that pops out at the most inopportune moments. Don't panic and be forearmed with knowledge.

The other thing to know is that when you unlock your bootloader, it will wipe your applications, system settings, and user and application data (ROM developers ask you to wipe your phone too when you install their ROMs). Make sure you backup contacts and calendar to Google (that's what I do anyway), and use a backup tool to backup user apps and their data. Any apps you purchased from Market will be automatically reinstalled to your phone once you re-establish on your phone the account you use to purchase those Market apps, but restoring from a backup also restores the app's settings and data.

i think htcdev is like a radio s-off,in that no matter what happens you will always be able to reroot. you can take OTAs,flash any boot/system/recovery images you want,and all you have to do is flash recovery,flash superuser.

i think alot of folks just arent in this frame of mind... they are used to how things were back in the old days of rotoing,where once a doorway was found, you had to hold onto your root access as a new doorway may not be present in newer firmware

with htcdev,you can lock/unlock as many times as youd like with your original unlock token.

it was completely natural to me,as im pretty used to rasio s-off devices and the "root via recovery" method is what id usually do after turning the secure flag off with an xtc clip

i like to do things simply,but at the same time,i like for folks to learn a few basics instead having to rely on one clicks. good examples are the basic adb/fastboot commands that need to be run to unlock via htcdev and root via recovery. another good example is rom manager. if people wish to use it,i always strognly reccomend to become comfortable manually doing it in recovery first

you really dont need a 1 click if youre fairly tech savy. in a nutshell:
1)unlock via htcdev
2)temporarily or permanenty install a recovery
3)install super user via a .zip file,or a menu option in amon recovery

thats it. with an unlocked bootloader its not intrusive,its not dangerous. its not really even an exploit!

you can rest assure,the rezound will be difficult to impossible to brick via software with htcdev unlock. the hboot and radio are protected from being fudged up like any other s-on hboot

there are some slight differences(you cant write the boot image from recovery) that make ROMing slightly different than what you may be used to,but overall its a safe way for folks that arent so tech savvy to mess with their phones,and a good compromise from htc.

I think I'm actual preferring S-On. It has made me learn a few things and I can see how we are a little better protected from ourselves (ie forking up Radios or Images or whatever) because we used an exploit vice just having the boot loader unlocked.

I'm probably not using the right terminology, but hopefully you get the gist of what I am saying!

Rooting via a Recovery was easy, using fastboot is a no brainer and it's actually fun. And I can't say enough that we knuckleheads appreciate the work that smart folks like you do in making flashable zip files and all that...plus taking the time to share your extensive knowledge.

Root Rezound OTA Update 2.01.605.11

I didn't want to use a new Rom so I followed this post.

Used Version 1.3 of the Zip file to push Amon RA.

The followed this from that post.

Rooting/Re-rooting your Rezound after installing OTA update 2.01.605.11 with Amon Ra

• Your Rezound bootloader is unlocked
• You have installed OTA update 2.01.605.11
• You have Amon Ra installed (if not, use rEZoundRoot option 5)

So, in this scenario, you previously had your Rezound rooted and decided to install the latest OTA update. After rebooting, you realized that you lost root. All you need to do now is reboot into recovery and push the su/superuser, then download superuser from the Android market.

• Pull your battery out of your Rezound
• Put the battery back in
• Hold down the Volume Down key and Power key at the same time until the HBOOT screen appears
• Press Volume Down then Power to open Amon Ra recovery
• Select Developer Menu
• Select Install su & superuser
• Reboot your Rezound
• Download and install Superuser from the Android Market

That's it. You now have root with your previous settings and the new OTA update.

I'm having a similar issue with the wifi problem...Another problem I'm having also though is...whenever I try to re-lock my phone, it says Re-locked, but then under it it says SECURITY WARNING. Then it won't let me do anything but go into H-Boot. Only way out of it is to unlock my phone again, I'm running the stock ROM, the 2.0 version, using it in anticipation for the OTA update, have stock kernel and stock recovery, too. Would running the RUU after re-locking help, even though It says security warning? Or is there something else I'm missing, or maybe hadn't done right? I've factory reset and wiped data multiple times over the course of trouble-shooting this, too.

yes,at this point you prolly just need to run the ruu to get your wifi working again.

the security warning is typical of locking your bootloader with custom firmware,or enuff things modified on the stock rom that the hboot now sees it as "custom". it basically is forcing you to run the ruu and get you back to 100% stock when you relock. so running the ruu on top of the security warning will work fine.

another option would be to pullthe boot and system images from the ruu,and just flash them in hboot over the unlocked hboot
