Looks as though root progress just hit a dead end. So now I'm waiting on 2.1 and will just have to be happy with it.

Eris to v2.x, when?

It COULD be second quarter, but the official word from HTC was that it was Q1 and being that Q1 is not over yet, its still a viable date. Until Q1 ends, or HTC does announce OFFICIALLY that it will be sometime after Q1 the actual launch date is still SOMETIME IN Q1.
I feel that a lot of people are forgetting about this.

Well acid, the pr guy, seems to be leaving, but I'm sure the devs are still working. Just getting frustrated since all the known exploits they've tried so far have been patched.

I really don't understand why "everyone" thinks this phone is a piece. This is my 4th smartphone, and it's great. MY battery will last 2 days with moderate use, I don't have any bad lag problems, it's a great phone. So what that it's the cheaper one. It's 2010. Smacky isn't "everyone."
Most of us are happy with our phone and what it can do and excited for 2.1 and what it hopefully will be able to do. For some reason he's become sour on the whole thing and has been actively trolling for reactions lately.
Get a new phone, or a new attitude. Either way, we don't want to hear it.

So, how long have you felt that way about the Eris?
When I realized keyboard lag wasn't normal and that phones with raw Android performed better.
Clearly I'm not the only one that feels this way. Ask the dozen or so members that don't seem to be around anymore. Stopped waiting on root and don't seem to care about 2.1.
I dunno. I don't care much either which explains the attitude.

Some people will complain about any phone they have. I'm willing to bet there are some people who have never owned a phone he/she didn't bitch and moan about.

We've all seen the "Hooray for smart developers leaving our phone, realizing it's a ******ed POS" postings in forums for just about every popular phone out there; I just thought I'd ask to see if there was something specific you have not resolved with the Eris.

I really don't care when the update comes, as long as it does come.
I'm very happy with my phone and haven't read anything that is coming with 2.1 that I can't live without or at least wait for.
I do want 2.1 though, simply because once we get loaded with the latest OS version, that will extend the useful life of our phone. It will extend the time that new apps on the Market will be compatable with our Android version.
One poster said in one of these many, many 2.1 threads that we should be grateful to be getting an upgrade. Grateful isn't the word I would choose. I read up on the Eris before my purchase and Verizon was clear that Eris would be getting the upgrade and that was part of my purchase decision. So, I feel entitled, not grateful, but also in no hurry.

I think they might have been referring to the fact that many other smartphones don't get updates past a certain point. The BlackBerry Curve is a good example of that. They made a few upgrades to the OS over a few years, but when they went from 4.x to 5.x it was, "Sorry, that won't run on your phone." So now, all the new apps are being developed for 5.x and none of the semi-older phones can run them. From what I understand this has also happened several times with Windows Mobil. With Android, even the first model (G1) is going to get 2.x at some point. I think that is pretty cool.

I'm a little down on the Eris right now but that is simply because I've hit my limit on being able to tinker with it. I do wish I had gone with a faster phone but I got this one for free so how can I complain too much? I was so used to WinMo in which I could put a new ROM on it practically every other day if I wanted. On the other hand, I hated that Omnia.
Off topic I know...people treat 2.1 like it's a miracle drug. I just think that we will grow accustomed to the new features in about a day. Root is the way for tech fidgety people like myself.

I agree with you about root. People that want to constantly tinker with their phone, root is what they want. It will most likely keep them happy for longer than any OS update.
Personally, I'm starting to want 2.x for new apps more than anything else.

As soon as we get 2.1 we will have threads and people throwing a fit about the next OS update that the Eris doesn't have. 2.1 isn't a miricale drug, although OS updates seem to act like drugs to people. They always seem to need that next fix.

Oh...let me tell you...with WinMo, there are zero upgrades from one version OS to the next. If you get a winmo 6.1 phone, you will have that OS for the life of the phone. In comparison, it would be an "I'm sorry" for us 1.5 users to get 1.6, 2.0, 2.01, or 2.1 because this is the version that we bought and if we want another then we'd have to get a newer phone with the latest OS version.
On the flip-side, you could use custom made ROM's all day long (including with updated OS and builds in between). Also, I will stand corrected if someone says otherwise, but I don't believe that there was a "root" that had to happen. Someone cooked a leaked ROM for the specific phone and you could install it right in place of the old one.
Correct me if I am wrong, but i would assume that they don't update beyond a couple years because that is the shelf life of most phones. They will either die of natural or unnatural causes (dropped in toilet, run over by car, etc.) before two years is up, or they will be replaced by a new phone with a newer OS anyway.
