Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Just successfully rooted the other Evo. It's not such a pain in the ass afterall.

Do you run the nandroid restore after you flash a new rom?

Hello all.

Newbie rooter here.

I am following method #1, HTCDev method.

Am on step three, flashing a rom. I'm a bit confused.

I have the ZZZVR_Superwipe file, do I unzip it before putting on the SD Card?

I have the MikG rom, same question, does it get unzipped before copying it to the card?

When I reboot phone with Vol Down, am I to assume that one of my options will be 'recovery'?

Will it be obvious how to make a nandroid backup?

'find the superwipe and file and flash it' - Again, will be it obvious how to 'flash' it? same goes for the rom file.

Sorry for the questions, but didn't see more specific steps for total newbies and I'm being very careful not to brick the phone.

Thanks.

Copy and drag both superwipe and Mikg unzipped to the root of your SDcard. When you load up the bootloader(Power+Vol down), select recovery. It will give you a ton of options, including Nandroid backup, Flash or install zip from sdcard...

When you select the Nandroid backup, it will give you a list of things to select for the backup process.

Make sure the first three are selected
boot
system
data

Also, select wimax.

Thanks for the quick reply. Just to clarify...
'Flash or install zip from sdcard'

If I unzip(extract) the files before transferring, how will I tell flash which the correct files are?

Oh wait, you are not supposed to extract anything, once they are downloaded just move them to the root of the card.

The files will show up exactly like they are named on the root of the card.

CAN SOMEONE HELP ME MY PHONE IS ROOTED. AND WAS WORKING WIITN STOCK GINGERBREAD ROM WITH TH HTC 3.0 sense. It powers on but all I see is my wallpaper and notifications in the backGRound. But I can't do anything touch sensor nothing. On the bootloader screen I see this:

Supersonic EVT3 SHIP S_OFF
HBOOT-2.10.001
MICROP-041F
TOUCH PANEL_ATMEL224_16AB
RADIO-2.15.00.11.19

@ocn
Good work on the guide updates.

For the TacoRoot guide, one important thing I don't see is that you have to boot the phone into stock recovery at least once for it to work. But it is possible I missed it.

Keep up the good work ! :)

So I decided to run the nandroid restore and....I think I'm back to a stock rom or something.....

What do I do????

Edit: Problem fixed, flashed superwipe and mikg rom again. Good as new.

Ok, so I have FINALLY gotten the HTCDev method to work (seemed a bit easier and I'm kinda glad).

NOW I have flashed Amon Ra 2.3 onto my phone and ran the Nandroid recovery (selected all options, sorry I'm a paranoid mofo with little cash to replace phone).

I THINK I'm ready to install a new ROM onto my phone. I'm probably going with the MikG 3.0 (since it's gotten the best reviews so far).

HERE IS THE QUESTION(S)!

Do I need to have s-off to do this? And is my phone Rooted?

nope as long as you have unlocked the bootloader you are good to go as far as flashing and such. you just need a custom recovery to flash te rom. good choice in mikg3.0

really recovery and the superuser app (which all custom roms have) is all you need to do anything in the rooting world. so your are good to go my friend.

I DID IT!!! This rom is AWESOME!!!!

So anytime I want to try out a different rom all I have to do is create a NANDROID back up of the one I'm using, flash everything like before (Cache, Dalvik Cache, Data, then use the superflash), the install the new custom rom correct?

I'm a lil behind in the Android world....but I catch up quick (hopefully)!

you need to WIPE Cache, Dalvik Cache, Data not flash them. LOL:D but yes that is what you should do. some will say that you should wipe everything but the sd card. but i think for me that is overkill as amon ra2.3 does really well at wiping. however it does not hurt to do it.

and you hit it on the head with nandroid backups. just remember that they are your friend. bad things can happen if you do not have any nandroid backups to go back to.

if you really want to catch up with the root world then i would look into kernels and using setcpu. here is some reading for you:

TacoRoot way isnt working... in the command prompt after entering in the first line of code and pressing enter, I get

* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
error: device not found

after this none of the following commands work and I get the following message for every command I type...

error: device not found

I followed everything before that to a T... wtf?!?!??!

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
try installing htc sync:
setup_3.0.5551.exe

i somehow forgot to add that in to the guide. my apologies:o try installing it and try again.

appreciate the quick reply

I take it the error is a driver issue?

do i need to install HTC sync (for the drivers), then uninstall it (since other page says you don't want any HTC programs on computer)?

I'll let ya know if it worked... hopefully I don't get more errors and brick my phone halfway through the commands... i'm so nervous i'm going to mess something up

yeah it is the driver issue. if your nervous about rooting this method then maybe you should try the HTCdev method. it is much easier. but that is up to you.

I will testify to the ease of the HTCDev method. Especially if your phone is out of warranty. Once I realized the error I was making copying the identifier token over it was stupid easy! Plus having Ocnbrze as a guide will make this a snap.

step 6 in the tacoroot I am getting a following message

"The system cannot find the path specified".

AHHHH! any ideas!? I can't boot or I'll be unstable!

this tacoroot looked like the most simple off the bat, just having to download some stuff and enter a few commands... so much for that... any way of reversing what had been done through the tacoroot first 5 steps?!
