Help Disappearing Icon

Let's start by finding a name to describe the bit at the bottom of my S2's screen, which has four icons. These remain fixed in place even when you scroll through several screens.

Let's call it the taskbar, although that's probably not right but it will suffice.

I have deleted the Google Mail icon as I find it pretty useless as it doesn't always synch properly and display the latest mail. Using the edit function I have dragged the icon for my Dolphin browser and Gmail is listed on the Dolphin 'speed dial' and I now check Gmail using this.

So far so good. My problem is that, if I reboot, or clear my Ram, the Dolphin icon disappears and I have to go through the edit process all over again to replace it.

After editing and dragging Dolphin onto the taskbar I do press 'Save' but it makes no difference.

How can I embed an icon on my taskbar so it doesn't keep disappearing?

Thank you.

First its called a dock bar. Second, what launcher are you using? TW which is the stock launcher? Didn't know you can replace the icons at the bottom using TW. Never managed to do it. I use Go Launcher, and ADW before, and both never had your problems.

That said, if you don't mind losing your settings on the launcher, you can go to the launcher and clear its data. Then try redoing everything again. Sometimes that helps. To get to the launcher, Tap Menu/Settings/Manage Applications and under the all tab, scroll until you reach the relevant launcher.

To edit the dock bar in TouchWiz, you open the app drawer, then press menu>edit and the icons can then be dragged to the dock bar. It should be a permanent setting.

Dock Bar, thank you for that. It's very easy to edit it (I use the stock browser).

Tap the 'Applications' icon, which seems to be the only one that you can't remove as it happens. You will then be able to press your menu button and up comes an 'Edit' function. However, this only happens in Grid View. If you're on List View you don't get the edit option.

From then on it is simple and you can move icons and drag others to the bar.

But so far, I can't make them permanent!

As I said, I know how to do it. My problem is that it isn't permanent. I have the stock browser. Is that Touch Wiz?

If you are using stock, then its touch wiz launcher. Go to settings/manage applications and under the all tab, scroll down until you get TW launcher. Can clear data from there. It will reset your homepage settings though.

I get the part about changing the dock icons now. I've been trying to change it in the homescreen like other launchers. Didn't realize have to do it in the app screen. Learn new stuff everyday. Don't know about it not sticking. Clearing the data might help. I am using Go Launcher mostly anyway, so doesn't bother me. Good luck.

I would follow Russel's advice and clear the data from the TWLauncher app. It will clear all custom settings and changed you made to your home screens, but if the settings for the dock bar are somehow corrupt, then that would repair it.

I have three home screens all of which have icons just where I want them. One screen has eight folders, each of which has a number of icons in them.

Would I lose them all and have to start again! If that's the case I may give it a miss.

What I would like is for someone else with an S2 using the stock launcher to put a new icon on the dock bar, reboot and see if they lose it. If they do I'll know that there's nothing wrong with mine and that it's just a quirk of the system.

Anyone like to have ago?

I gave it a try. On my unrooted SGS2, I set the default launcher to TouchWiz. I then went into applications, pressed menu>edit and put the icon for Speed Test in the doc bar replacing the contacts icon, pressed menu>save and then home. . I rebooted the phone and Speed Test was still there.

It's your phone.

Yeah, you lose the settings. But really up to you. You could always try some new design for your homescreens.

:D

I'm sure you're right but this is one of those problems where the cure may be worse than the illness!

As I'm going to lose all my settings I've decided to download Go Launcher and, after playing with it last evening, I'm beginning to wish that I'd taken the plunge months ago!

When I'm happy with Go Launcher I shall delete TW Launcher's cache just to see if it does cure the problem.

Thanks for your help.
