I was in same boat as you, (S-OFF, 2.3.4 loaded, no root available....
Just today, 2/12/12. Here's what I used, confirmed working - original thread @ XDA, is now archived, but this is the snippet from the thread, and a link to the archived thread for reference:

Doug Piston's post from 16th September 2011, 02:49 AM

"You have to install a custom recovery thru hboot, and then flash the su binary from in recovery.

CWM Recovery 5.0.2.0 : http://dinc.does-it.net/PB31IMG.zip

SU Binary 2.3.2-efgh : http://dinc.does-it.net/su.zip

I installed the ruu earlier and 10 minutes later was rooted again."

Phone Info:
Android Version 2.3.4, Baseband Version 2.15.10.07.07, Kernel Version 2.6.35.13-g03546aa, Build Number 4.08.605.2 CL185897, Software Number 4.08.605.2, Browser Version WebKit/533.1, PRI Version 1.70_002, PRL Version 58006, ERI Version 5

My Incredible started as stock 2.3.4.
I ran the unlock tool from HTC and my phone is currently unlocked (Verified in HBOOT).
I attempted to download the PB31IMG file but the share limit is exceeded. I downloaded it from another user that posted it on this thread.
I downloaded SU from your original post.
I did a quick format twice and a full format once to Fat 32.
When i boot into HBOOT i get Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device? yes or no?

Any help would be appreciated

Ok.
Go back to the OP, I added a new primary download for clockwork 5.0.2.0. Download it (likely the same file you have but I know the name of this one which is important, trust me). Now that you have it downloaded, extract the zip to reveal a file called recovery-clockwrok-5.0.2.0-inc.img

Now, with the phone plugged into the pc, go to hboot and make sure fastboot is highlighted. If you have your fastboot set up to work globally and know what I just said right there, you're good. If not, on your PC, place the extracted .img file (and only that file) into the sdk folder that houses adb and fastboot (most likely the platform-tools folder of the sdk).

Once it's there, open windows command prompt and cd to the platform-tools directory. If you're running an even somewhat newer version of the sdk it would be:
cd c:\
cd android-sdk-windows\platform-tools

Then type fastboot devices

If it outputs your serial number, you're good.

Now type fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0.img

You should see it send the file. Give it time to complete. Now go to step #6 in the OP and continue with the rest of the procedure.

Thanks for the updated file and help this is what i get when i to sending the file.

*Update*
When trying to load the img the first time i was not fully in the fastboot menu just had it highlighted not selected. I have went into the sub menue and got though step 6.
The install finished normally and i rebooted using clockwork.
Upun reboot SU is not installed, I have rebooted the phone again still no SU.

*Update 2*
I installed SU through MP and Busy Box. After everything was installed and updated i am running root on 2.3.4. Thanks for all your help it is much apreciated.

This is for people who were rooted, unrooted (leacing S-off) then received the OTA update (or applied one of the non-rooted manual update methods). This lets them reroot the phone.

So they end up with the stock 2.3 Rom, only with root.

Will this method not work with phones that have never been rooted then? I have a virgin Incredible running 2.3.4, and my plan was to apply the HTC unlock and then follow this guide. Will this not work for me?

You will be able to follow this guide after you successfully follow the htc unlock instructions. However it is recommended that you follow these instructions instead, to gain full root.
http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/427344-how-root-2-3-4-downgrade-get-s-off.html

With only an htc unlocked bootloader, you will not be able to install alternate radios or downgrade to previous firmware versions. Having those options makes it much easier to recover a soft bricked phone.

just to add a lil to what sdraw said... htcdev is a PITA. its the only option on my rezound. it is definately better than nothing, but id give my left you-know-what for an option to s-off,no matter how complex or time consuming, lol.

look thru the directions in the post sdraw linked, holler there if you have questions :)

thanks for everything on here.

it seems like everything is ok when i flash clockwork, but i cannot get superuser to install on the phone. i'm able to run clockwork from recovery, follow the superuser install instructions, and see no errors with the install, but cannot find superuser when i look for it in the app folder. just to double check i ran a root checker and it came up negative.

i was in 2.2 with root and s-off, then just upgraded to 2.3.4 with s-off, and now want to root.

Thats odd. Try the market version and see if it'll load. If not, try loading "superuser update fixer" from the market.

i tried again with a newer version of superuser i found in the forums and everything worked smoothly. now the phone is right where i want it to be. Thanks!

Can't get my incred rooted, never has been rooted.
I tried to follow the guides but nothing works.
info about my incred:
flashed latest ruu via PB31IMG.zip from 16GB SDHC
ran htcdev unlock
i tried unrevoked 3.22 and 3.32, i also tried the cli/fastboot commands and this is what i get

adb devices shows no devices
fastboot devices shows my serial number fine, even when just in hboot [weird?]
fastboot flash recovery boot.img gives me an md5sums error no matter what recovery i try.
PB31IMG.zip will not even give me the option of pressing up to continue install.

edit: [signature verification failed] is the error i receive, i have tried amon ra, cwm 5, cwm3, cwm25, stock. none will flash. i tried two different computers, i have not tried a different sdhc as i successfully used the same sdhc to flash the latest RUU PB31IMG.zip right before i tried to install a custom recovery [a means to root???]

For adb connectivity, make sure usb debugging is enabled in settings/applications/development.

To get your recovery flashed, your fastboot command is not quite correct. Try the directions in post #48

Pb31img files and htcdev are extrememy tricky. They will drive you nuts,so id recomend fastboot commands instead.

Check out post 48 and let us know wat further questions you have :)

These instructions will only work for the HTC incredible.

This is what you need to follow:

sdrawkcab25 and fellow members,

I am trying to follow instructions for rooting HTC rezound and so when installing amonra recovery from this link, [RECOVERY] Amon Ra Recovery Image [FASTBOOT] , it says put the image fine in same folder as fastboot. What does it mean? Where do I put it?

Also, the adb commands dont work for me. They used to at some point. What could I be doing wrong?

Can you please help?

could be any number of things wrong, especially if youve downloaded and set up the android SDK.

rather than taking stabs at it,i think it would simplify things if you ditch the sdk and use this: mini-adb.zip

its the adb/fastboot utilities and the stuff to make them work.

if you dont have drivers,or are unsure, use these: revolutionary modified drivers

simply extract(unzip) the mini-adb zip file, and place the unzipped folder onto the root of you C drive(root=not inside a folder). you may need a utility such as 7zip to extract the file if your running something other than windows 7.

open a cmd window. windows 7(same or similar for others): click start bubble, type command in search window

this opens a small back command window. change to your adb/fastboot folder by type,or copy/paste:

cd c:\mini-adb

then, plug in your phone, enable usb debugging(settings/apps/development),charge only mode. enter in the cmd window:

adb devices

if you get a serial number in response, you can enter:

adb reboot bootloader

this will take you to fastboot. enter:

fastboot devices

if you get a serial number back, your drivers are working correctly, and so are adb and fastboot.

fastboot reboot will reboot your phone

you can then use this folder to follow the directions to flash the amon recovery image. :) place the image into mini-adb,along with fastboot, adb, and the other things in it.

hope that helps :)

Scotty85,

Dude thanks a lot!!! I am all set. Actually I am sorry for this stupid question - I know I had installed my HTC drivers at one point but I had redone my box since and diddnt realize that. Stupid stupid stupid!!!

Ok, if anyone can help me that would be very helpful. I have S-On and Used Unrevoked and now I have clockwork installed and superuser. I used other app to see if I was rooted and I'm not. To turn S-Off would I just need to run Revoked again? I just need that damn S-Off and I can't do it.
Would I have to update the radio? or anything please I need help any quick replies please!?!
