Help HDMI/Ext monitor help needed.

I need some help getting the screen to work as I need it.

I bought a 7" HDMI monitor to use with my Bionic. When I plug it in, it works but the phone is in the middle of the screen, which is in landscape mode but the phone is in portrait mode (see Pic-1). This is useless to me for my application.

Is there any way I can force the HDMI output into portrait mode so it looks like my cell phone (see Pic-2)? I did call the manufacture and they said I need to make the changes in the phone's HDMI video driver.

When I rotate the phone from portrait mode to landscape mode the HDMI monitor shows the phone's image like I want it for just a second (see Pic-2) then goes into landscape mode (see Pic-3).

The problem with locking the phone in landscape mode is that many apps force the screen back into portrait mode. Navigation is one app that I need to be in portrait mode but the HDMI monitor switches back to landscape mode.

Where could I find a developer that could modify/write the HDMI Android video driver?

[to be clear, Pic-1 is how it is now, Pic-3 is how it looks when the phone is in landscape mode. When navigation is on, the screen goes back to Pic-1 style. Pic-2 is what I want the external monitor to look like when the phone is in portrait (normal) mode.

Are you rooted? If you are go to [MOD] Webtop Via HDMI Without a Dock - xda-developers and run this mod. This will allow the laptop dock application to run with out the laptop dock (obviously).

I looked at this fix and don't think it does what I need done. I tried to install it but the install failed.

I am trying to get the hdmi monitor to look like the attached picture ALL the time.

My project requires me to mount the hdmi monitor in portrait mode permanently thus the need for the mod.

I guess I have to ask ... you plan to operate the device by seeing the screen on its side?

It is operating the exact way mine operates. Plugging in the HDMI cable overrides the settings for the home screens only. The screens of apps are handled exactly the way you expect with (including the Auto Rotate switch).

(As memory serves me ... this is the same way it operates when plugged into any docking station also.)

Have you messed with the rotation lock in the phone?

Yes, that is the first thing I tried. If you put the phone in landscape mode and then turn of the navigation, the screen goes back into portrait mode and is smaller than on my cell phone.

Yes, I plan on keeping the external hdmi monitor on its side all the time. This is why I need to make it work just as the cell phone screen does and not as it does now. As you can see by one of my pictures it does this just right but it only lasts 1 second.

Here's an alternate approach.

The "problem" is that the default home screen does not rotate when you change the Bionic into landscape.

Try Go Launcher Ex. It does rotate when you change to landscape.

I think you can do what you want by not placing the display on its side and use Go Launcher Ex.

I really want to keep the external screen on its side. Its much better for navigation. I have no real plans on ever watching movies on this screen at all. The monitor will be mounted permanently into the dash of my motorcycle using an actuator to raise and lower it as needed.

Still probably a good idea to try GO Launcher EX without dismissing it so quickly since it has options for Screen Orientation... Auto, Vertical, Veritical (disable keyboard), and Horizontal

I think there is some confusion here. It sounds like the OP wants to mount the external monitor in a portrait orientation, so that the physical monitor is taller than it is wide, and have the portrait-orientation phone display fill the external screen. Imagine all the pics shown so far rotated 90 degrees clockwise and you'll understand better.

The problem is that the display mirroring of the Bionic assumes that the external monitor is in a landscape orientation, so when it's mirroring a portrait-oriented display, it shows up on the external display as shown in the first pic.

I don't know of any way to address this issue, but wanted to clear up the confusion so that others can better understand the problem.

EXACTLY! But I do know it can display as I desire because it does it for 1 second while changing from portrait to landscape mode on the phone (as seen in Pic-2

I will try the app as stated above but my guess would be that I need someone to write a new hdmi video driver for the phone or modify the current one.. If it came to that, I am willing to pay a reasonable fee to get it done.

Does the monitor its self have the ability to be rotated in its settings?

What is the brand and model of it?

It may be more an issue with the monitor then with the Bionic.

None of this is exactly what you wanted. As mentioned initially ... it could come closer. The closest I could find was ...

GO Launcher Ex
Settings | Preferences | Screen Settings
Screen orientation select Vertical Mode

This would lock it in vertical mode in the center of the screen.

You also can increase the number of icons displayed on the screen.
Settings | Preferences | Screen Settings
Grid size

You also can increase the number of icons displayed on the App Drawer.
Settings | Preferences | App drawer settings
Grid size

You can also remove the labels from the icons.
Settings | Preferences | Screen Settings
App icon labels select Hide labels

Thanks Thom. It does work on the phone as you describe. However, what comes out the HDMI port does not. I really think its going to take a re-written hdmi driver to get what I need done.

Can anyone suggest a person or company that can write such a driver?

i just saw your post on the screen rotation and im having the same problem, also where did you buy this monitor? i would also like to buy one
