Thinking about buying a lg esteem but....

pandage

Newbie
Yesterday I walked into a metro store looking to buy the esteem and after telling the employee what I want she told me that they had pulled it because of an issue with the phone. Saying that it had been power cycling. So I went home and did some research and found that lg had put out an update for the phone to fix the issue. Does the phone actually have this issue and does the update work if it does? Also if I find the phone at another actual metro store should I get it? Can anyone give me any advice on what to do?

I have the esteem bought it about a month ago with the update never had a problem

They are some phones ( not all ) that have that issue but nevertheless the majority of the phone branch have no problem whatsoever. And yes , its the best phone metro has ATM..

Esteem is the best phone I've had, and I've had A LOT (Even the Iphone *cough*).
Metro employees I've found aren't the brightest bulbs. If you want answers come here, which you did.

Buy the Esteem and don't look back. Then get on here, root it and find a ROM you like and enjoy 4G like the rest of us. :D

Good luck :D

over on another forum, a Metro employee said the Esteem has been temporarily pulled until LG releases an update for the random power cycling issue. I have not had any problems with that since October, and thought the issue had been resolved. Well, it's resolved on my phone! :)

I love my Esteem and it's still even on stock ROM. Yes it's been rooted and all real bloatware has been removed. I kept the stock apps that are actually useful, as opposed to some who think that everything LG/Metro puts on the phone should automatically be removed.

I also have 3000 extended battery, as that is the one issue I will complain about -- the stock 1500 mAh battery is ridiculously small. It's the same battery LG puts in the 3.2" CDMA-only LG Optimus and this is a 4.3" LTE + CDMA phone. All newer LTE phones have 1850 mAh batteries and larger.

There are ONLY few people who have that problem; majority are not at all; maybe less than 3%?? However, there is an exception, I had galaxy indulge with a battery "issue" (very very short life), then I found all of them have the same problem; this thing indeed is no no buy!

Yes, it has reboot issues pandage. It's a well documented issue that has plagued many owners of the device. The latest ZVC update, which all Esteems have now been updated to, didn't fix the problem. However, here is a thread which may or may not help with the issue. That is, if you don't mind lowering your 4G speeds, handicapping your overall network throughput.

You'd be better off picking something else.

BTW, the LG Connect 4G doubles the performance of the Esteem and is the same price.

Not a Connect hater, infact I was going to buy one until I heard they are having reboot issues as well over on the connect forum here on Android Forums
So, if both devices are having reboot issues, that makes their problems even, which means the Connect is still better overall. Makes more sense to pick up a current spec'd device. Single-core phones on Android are not worth it anymore.

Trust me if you were to go into my profile and search my post on the connect you would only see that I thought the connect was better phone. Thats only my opinion and I'm still planning on buying one. However overall the connect is not better. Seeing how the esteem has a couple things better than the connect such as hdmi, Front facing camera, Rear facing camera, bigger screen etc. would make your observation wrong. However its just up to the customer's needs at this point. When a phone comes out that actually can top these two cameras specs like the galaxy s2, then you can say that...

Thanks to everyone who responded. After reading this I decided to go ahead and pick up the esteem. In the store I looked at the connect and couldn't take my eyes off the bigger screen on the esteem. So I bought the esteem. I really thank everyone who responded. I didn't know this forum would be this helpful and I definitely will come the forum before I ever go to store. Oh and so far I absolutely love the phone. It was a nice upgrade from the admire. :D

Not at all demarsjcd. The FFC is better on the Esteem, 1.3MP > VGA, but the rear camera on both devices is 5MP.

The bigger screen is actually what loses the battle for the Esteem in the display category. A bigger screen @ the same resolution isn't better. Pixels Per Inch Pixel Density is what counts the most when it comes to sharpness.

In this case, the Connect w/~242 ppi pixel density > Esteem w/~217 ppi pixel density.

Anyone who is a novice at knowing what makes a better device only looks at which screen is bigger, or which device's camera has more megapixels (Ohhh, 41MP!!!). That's why so many people end up with crappy devices. I'll take a camera with a 3MP resolution that embodies a high quality lens as opposed to one with a 8MP resolution which houses a less than stellar lens. The 3MP camera will win every time.

No difference in the ratio regarding screen size/resolution. A 4" screen with a resolution of 480x800 is going to be sharper than a 4.3" screen at the same resolution. Not to mention that the LG Connect 4G is using LG's better technology (NOVA).

welcome aboard.

I know this is late but I see it in all the threads now a days on here "oh, Ill just wait for a galaxy s2" by the time metro releases an s2 they will likely be on s4 or s5, they haven't released a galaxy s1 and it seems like that may come out this summer or the third quarter but metro is not going to release a galaxy s2 anytime soon. So get comfortable with your esteem ;)

I agree...made the same mistake myself with the Incredible by thinking that way. I passed on a few really good devices trying to hold out for the next big thing.

From here on out, when I see phone that I like, I'm just going for it. :D

Yogi Bera said,"When you come to a fork in the road, take it." A friend who had a Galaxy S2 told me to checkout the Esteem and it was love at first sight. I couldn't leave the store without it. :p

The salesperson is probably telling you this because they need you to buy a 2012 phone.. i.e the Attain 4G or Connect 4G. I haven't had any problems with my Esteem since purchasing. The Connect also looks like a great phone. No biases here, I'm just glad that Metro is finally getting a mid to high end line up.

told ya...enjoy this super phone for a week or two...then unleash this beast with the extreme kernel;).

As a pperson who has had the unfortunate dilemma of having to deal with this power cycling issue I can say that this is not a phone that you want to buy. Albeit an amazing phone, if you get one of the defective phones, you're screwed. I called LG three times asking wwhat I could do about this problem and they essentially said they couldn't reimburse me since I didn't buy it directly from them. Secondly, Metro AND LG both knew aabout this problem yet willingly released the phones to the public without telling them ANYTHING. How llegal is that? Not very. Anyway this ultimately made me cancel my service with metro and I'm pursuing to perhaps file a claim with LG. I'm not sure. I'm just posting in hopes that if you do have a rebooting issue, take it back to metro and get a full refund (I hope you haven't used an hour of talk time yet).
