Root overclocking performance

overclocked my rooted droid to 950 mhz using the setcpu app. well the widget says its running at 950mhz and everything but i dont really notice any difference from stock. Am i supposed to?
 
When I overclock and everything is running correctly screen changes are smoother and faster, data loads faster, screen refresh is also faster. Widgets and other processes running in the background have less of an impact. Again, it depends on which ROM, which kernel (everyone seems to have a different favorite combination). JIT is supposed to radically speed everything up but still has stability issues.

Overclocking greatly improved my web browsing significantly...and also, kind of ironically, since I started OCing and using SetCPU, my battery life has improved GREATLY due to the profile settings.

So to me, OCing was/is the best feature and reason to root. Which I was rooted long before OCing and all these goodies were available, but to anyone new at this, OCing would be the most significant reason I suggest to someone that's debating rooting or not
 
Oh yeah, and another thing aaronmach1, you might as well update your Smoked Glass ROM to version 5.0.1, it is SUPER nice and very high quality ROM imo

well my refurb will be here tomorrow so i may update to 5.0.1 on that phone if its a good one. where do i get the 5.0.1 update? Also ive only rooted using vtothez's vids. so can i just download 5.0.1 to my computer and then put it on my phone using the same exact process as he shows for v4.5?

Yes you can! Just DL the file (not with Google Chrome) and put on the root of your sdcard. Reboot into recovery and choose "Install", then choose "Choose ROM from sdcard" and pick the file you DLed. Then just follow the onscreen instructions and you're good to go man

You can find the new ROM at DroidForums.net or Alldroid.org

5.0.1 is a great ROM, but I would use chevysno1 kernel with it.
 
I've still never noticed any speed benefit from overclocking it. One note in particular. On the phone, when I dial a number there is a delay between when I press the number and I hear the sound. Drives me nuts since I am a musician that there's this slight delay. But overclocking did nothing to fix it. Was hoping a phone twice as fast would make a difference but I guess not.

The set cpu profiles is nice though for sure.
 
I'm running DroidMod with SetCPU set at 1200. Compared to stock, it's a huge difference for me. Everything seems to go faster, moving between pages and screens and such is smoother, and the amount of FCs has significantly reduced.

I'm not sure how it is for other people, but that's my personal experience with it.
 
It's like having a new phone, honestly. Everything is so much smoother, snappier, and more stable. Browsing and downloads are also much faster. And I'm only OC'd to 900...

I'm very, very happy.
 
ok, do this

take setcpu set a charging profile to run at 550
and set it to run at 1200 the rest. or 1100 or whatever the highest is you can do. Mine is set to 1200.

swype through your home screens, then plug it in. now its at 550 (stock speed) sype the screens. Thats how I can tell and show the difference easily.

On another note, I was running DroidMod at 1,200 and now am running Chevy's at 1,100 (1250 puts me in a boot loop, so does the 1,200).

MFlops down from 10 to 8.5 on average. Not much slower visually, though.
 
Another thing to consider is how many widgets and all you have on your screens. If you don't have many to begin with then the lower stock speeds are pretty snappy. Once you really load the screens up and it gets laggy then you definitely notice the difference if you OC.

Still, the performance just browsing the web increases greatly. Load some pages up at different speeds and you will definitely see the difference.
