Memory cards/Class

Val21

Newbie
I'M looking to upgrade my memory card. But i need someone to explain the differant class. Some are Class 4 or class 2. What does this mean.

The higher the class the faster it is. Class 10 would be the fastest. Also, the higher the class the higher the cost, but still relatively cheap. You can get a class 10, 16 gig at Newegg.com for around $20. I have a class 6, 8 gig I bought for $7.

I've heard that Android phones will treat all class 6 cards and higher as class 6. Not sure if that's true or not.

Well Put it this way, there is no way they make 10 classes of cards on purpose, they probably only make one, and do to how they test during quality control is what class they end up being sold as.

you know class 10 cards were done right.

This is write speed, not read speed and is only important for recording video. Read speed is the same of all cards regardless of class speed.

^ don't matter to me really still, there is is still a different level of cards after the quality control check that I don't trust.

like the class 2 cards out there, they should all be recycled.

Read speeds are the most important for use on an android phone. The faster the read speed the quicker the boot up time of the sd card. This is what takes so long when waiting to be able to use your system functions at boot up. The more apps on the SD card, the slower this will be as well.
The faster the read speed the quicker you can go from off/or reboot, to full functionality.

SD Tools from the market/Google play, can test your sd card read speed. It will also test your Write speed, but if your not using the sd card for video capture, who cares? We are mostly concerned with storage and the speed of which we can gain access to that storage on boot up, hence the concern primarily for increased read speeds.

This can be accomplished by using an SD booster application from the market (you have to be Rooted to use this). You might be able to go from a read speed of only 12-14MBps to almost 30MBps. This will decrease the time it takes for the contents of your SD card to be read, thus decreasing boot up times of your SD card and the time it takes to go from off to full functionality of your phone.

Class of SD cards are primarily for write speeds for video capture equipment. Read speeds are hit and miss. You don't know what you will get. They can be anywhere from 10-17MBps depending on the SD card brand and manufacturer, your device, and OS.
NOTE: You also want to pay attention to the uSD cards designed application. Some are for cameras, some for phones, etc.

Spending more money for a higher class uSD card for an Android Phone is like throwing your money onto a craps table. You loose more than you win.

EDIT: Maybe as a demonstration of the above^ members could post screen shots of the read speed test using SD Tools. Making sure to post the class of their SD card. Give the size and Brand /manufacturer as well as OS (stock,Froyo ROM, Gingerbread ROM etc.).

Maybe so, but when I'm writing 10's or 100's of megs in nandroid backups or ROM's to the SD card, I'll take all the speed I can get. ;)

I've never had a problem with my class 4 8GB PNY. I've made more nandroid's in the last 8 months than most people will in their lifetime. I have tried every ROM but 2 for the Optimus V (really old and outdated). Every kernel for the V that has come down the pike. Almost every update for the BACKside. Never had a problem with any of those nandroids, most being between 400-500MB's. I've made somewhere in the neighbor hood of...a whole bunch(I can't remember exactly how many)
If paying more for something that does just as good a job for a particular application as a less expensive item is your thing, I'm sure not going to stop you(must be a peace of mind thing going on). Most of us in this failing economy can only afford what will just get the job done. To imply that someone has to have a more expensive product, just won't do. The only time I would worry about cost is some of the cheap made uSD card's made by company's you never heard of, with no quality control standards at all( usual found on E-Bay and such).

I wasn't implying anything or urging anyone to buy anything beyond what they think they need. Just stating what I like, and, of course, no one has to have bigger and faster. I haven't had problems with my class 6, 8 gig card either. If I can afford bigger and faster, which isn't often, I will get it and I don't need someone else's approval first.

A few days ago I ordered a class 10, 16 gig card because I want faster write speeds and had an extra $19 I could afford spend. When it gets here I will do some tests to see what the difference is.

Also, an sd card is hardly a large enough factor in my life to affect my peace of mind.

class 10 and its read or write speed isn't my point of consern for my devices.

Its quality control when the item was made.

No way they make lower class cards on purpose.

If they rated PC hardware by class, id go for class 10 also.

As I know its top of its "class" during quality control.

Sorry Atmazz I did not mean to offend you. I did not say you had to do anything, if you look at my post ( Copied from post: If paying more for something that does just as good a job for a particular application as a less expensive item is your thing, I'm sure not going to stop you.) Again Please accept my apology for your misunderstanding.

I was trying to point out to other members that might read the posts in here, which were clearly communicating that they had to buy a more expensive higher class uSD card (Only on member mentioned that write speed was not important for normal function of the SD card storage capability on an Android phone).
That they did not in fact have to, and could be comfortable in the knowledge that Higher class did not mean higher Quality. It is starting to look like higher class means a faster read speed. Need more members to post there SD Tools results first, though.
That read speed is the factor that is the most important factor( unless they want to use the Video function which would require a better class). That read speed will not improve with a higher class is starting to appear false. I have seen some improvement on speed with a higher class, but not enough test results to verify.

If members with different size uSD card of varying classes post their SD Tools tests we can determine exactly of what benefit it is to buy a higher class uSD card.

Class does not mean Quality. Read speed, not write speed is what we are concerned with as Android phone user's and it might not improve with a Higher, more expensive, class of uSD card.

No member needs to be lead into buying a more expensive product based on false information, especially in this economy. We need to post results of the tests on various classes and sizes So That the truth is in fact representative of the actual facts

Class does not mean Quality.

Sorry if I misunderstood, and you are correct. All anyone needs to do is read the user reviews on Newegg. Some class 10's are no better than a class 6. Everyone can do their own research and not rely on any one person's opinion. When I'm spending my hard earned money I'll research something to death before I buy it. That's how I got my V. ;)

I received my class 10, 16 gig card today and did some testing against my class 4, 8 gig card. Read speeds were similar, which I assumed they would be. Write speeds were vastly different, as I also assumed. My last nandroid backup was 972 meg, so I am also very concerned with write speed, although I agree, it is secondary to read speed.

To try to be fair, I deleted everything off my class 4 so it would be as empty as the new class 10. I tested with SD Booster set at 2048 and SD Booster not on at all. I wasn't really surprised by the results, but the effect of using SD Booster from the market was an eye opener as far as the read speed.

You can see the class 4 write speed varies greatly. You can also see the difference SD Booster makes in the read speed.

The class 10 is pretty consistent in the read speed. I tested it about 5 times and it was between 14.2 and 14.8 each time. You can also see the read speeds were again improved with SD Booster.

Is class 10 better? You decide. ;) But I definitely recommend SD Booster. (sorry, SD Booster needs a rooted phone.)

Will this card format automatic if i put it in the phone?

Also after formating the card do i drag the old card apps on the new one?

The cards I've gotten were already formatted. Have you tried yours in the phone? I can't remember if the stock V can do it. If it isn't formatted you can use the large adapter that came with the micro card and put it in your computer to format it.

You can copy the info from your old card to your computer and then back to your new card.

Where i format the card and put all my apps and stuff on the new one. Now it is saying some apps are not installed lol. Its saying application not installed wtf lol.

Sorry, my fault. For some reason I thought you had your apps backed up. You'll probably have to reinstall them.

Atmazzz. Do you think you could post screen shot's of the sd card r/w speeds in your Optimus V. After all this is a disccusion on SD card's for the V. That way it would be a little better comparison when other V user's post their screen shots.
The discussion was on the read speed with apps on the sd card as well, as this is what we need to pay attention to the most, how long it takes to boot up from power off/reboot with 60 plus apps on the sd card. The speed might be slower and change with apps.
Who manufactures the uSD card will be helpful as well. If one manufacturer has got much better read speeds then that would be something that would help the members as well.

Thanks

P.S. I can't seem to find a class ratting on My 8G PNY, I need to be positive before I post screen shot, with 71 apps on the uSD card.

I'll see if I can try it tomorrow. My V is back to stock and in the box at the moment. I don't plan on rooting it again at this point in time so I'm not sure how easy it will be. Yes, this isn't on my V, but I think it is still valid for pointing out the differences in different classes of cards. The screens I posted are with Team class 4 and Team Class 10 micro SDHC cards.

I was looking through my order history at Newegg to get those links and I noticed the 8gb card is actually class 4, not class 6. So I guess it is pretty good for a class 4. :D

If nothing else, I can at least try again with them in my GS2 and full of apps. I think I have about 100.

**************

I just did 3 more test with the class 10. It currently has 2.81 gig of apps and data on it.
