Root When to Wipe when Using Nandroids??

scudder

Android Expert
Was wondering when/if it is necessary to do a FULL wipe and when, say, wiping cache and dalvik is sufficient as it relates to using Nandroids from the same ROM vs. different ROMS.

For example, I've been playing around with a few ROMs checking stability of my phone. Each time I had a semi-stable version of the ROM and my setup with some downloaded software, I made a nandroid backup. I have nands from MikG 2.56, MikG 3.11 and Tommy's Classic v005.

So, when and how well should I wipe??:

Going from MikG 2.56 to MikG 3.11 (or vice versa)??

Going to/from MikG XXX to Tommy's Classic v005?? Do I have to FIRST flash the zip of the respective ROM and THEN restore the nand of the ROM or do I have to just wipe to some extent going from MikG to Tommy (or vice versa)??

THANKS!!

Full wipe when flashing new ROMS, but dont need to do anything other than restore when restoring a nandroid.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but have a similar question- I couldn't find a definite answer that I was comfortable in the threads I've read, so...

If I am on MikG3.1, did a nandroid backup, then installed anthrax and the ultimate ram script, but want to restore my nandroid- will the restore bring back the old kernal and scripts, or will I have to reinstall MikG3.1 in order to at least bring back the old kernal?

Sorry...confirming/making sure, plus a follow up...

This "don't do anything" when restoring a nandroid just "restore" goes for going from, e.g., MikG to Tommy Tomatoe...two different ROMs from two different devs??

Follow up...what about is one goes from a Sense ROM nand to an ASOP ROM nand?? STILL no wipe when going from Sense to/from an ASOP nands??

THANKS!!

a nandroid is a complete picture of your phones state. so if you want to go back you will be going back to whatever you have had at that particular point in time. so if it is only mikg on that nandroid backup with no kernel or scripts added then that is what you will have when you restore it.

same thing as the nandroid backup gets restored a script is run that replaces the partitions automatically so that there is no need to wipe like mizzou and the great akazabam said. but it never hurts to wipe.

Correct, no wipe is ever *needed* when restoring a nandroid. As OCN linked & MizzBrent said, the recovery automatically wipes the areas before it restores them.

Wiping wont hurt anything though, its just not required
