Help Several problems on a new Galaxy Note N-7000!! pls help!!

adtyn1991

Lurker
Hello everybody,

I apologize for this post being so big but I had to cover all the details. I just got my new Galaxy Note N-7000(ceramic white) in India through Flipkart.com on 13th Feb. The phone worked fine the first day but since the next morning, I have been encountering a lot of problems. This is my first ever android phone so im pretty new to android and I am really scared if I might have gotten a defective piece. So please guys any help would be really great!

Here are some of my problems -

1. Phone restarted when moving apps from phone to SD card. Happened once.

2. Restart when changing the tabs in stock internet browser. Happened twice. Also the tabs move with a bit of lag. This is surprising with such high specs of the phone.

3. Restart when browsing the gallery. Happened Once.

4. Restart when connecting to usb mode through USB Utilities under settings>wireless and network>USB utilities. Happened Once.

5. Freeze when viewing gallery. Happened once and I had to remove the battery and reinsert it and switch the phone back on because even the home button was not responding.

6. Freeze when trying to attend incoming call. Happened once.

7. Advance task killer shows several apps open even if I never touched those apps. Mostly they are the default Samsung apps but sometimes a few apps I installed. Due all these my RAM always runs at a average of 550mb and I have to clear the memory and kill the apps (advanced app killer) frequently which makes the app screen to take time to load all the apps again.

8. Apps like skype, viber, ect crash often and give a message 'application crashed and gives options to either force close or report'. Viber almost always says that the

9. Generally gets very hot even when browsing the internet or the market and burns like hell when gaming. The heating problem has reduced a little ever since I updated the firmware which Kies showed.

I am PANICKING. :( Im not sure if this is happening only to me and I have gotten a defective piece or something. I have installed only decent apps like skype, facebook, viber, astro, asphalt 6, blood and glory, angry birds, omnisketch, box, barcode scanner to name a few and they just fill only up to half the 4th app screen . I haven't installed any custom roms or have rooted my device yet. I havent even installed any external apk's or apps outside of the android market or Samsung apps. Should I go for a replacement or can these problems be fixed? Thanks in advance for any help!

As of now (I have been using my phone for about a month), I have had two lockups, two or three force closes and one random boot. The two lockups seem to be related to voip so I am not going to blame the phone there. The rest just seemed random.

Lots of processes running in the background is not a problem. These are either parts of the OS or things that you installed. You certainly don't need to kill them yourself. Android will do any memory managment necessary if it starts to run out. Certanly I also have 550Mb in use and that is just with Skype and a music player running.

My phone really heats up when the processor is in use (particularly when I am using the phone as a WiFi hotspot). This is also nothing out of the ordinary.

You could try a factory reset to see if that helps. Also if you are not running version 2.3.6 (look in settings under about phone), then I would try to upgrade to this version.

I guess you may have bad firmware somehow. If the factory reset does not work, then you can try to get a replacment and see if that works better. Certainly the phone shold perform much better than you are seeing.

Good luck...

Regards,
Eric Ritchie.

+1 Great suggestions

The number one thing you don't want to use is a task killer.

Now im a bit relieved about the phone heating problem and the apps opening by themselves!! but hey what do u mean by the phone locking up? i just want to be clear :) do you mean that the phone hanged or froze and you had to remove the battery to restart it? and what about the rather frequent crashes of applications? and are you saying that from points 1-6 happened to you also when you got your phone? and i am using the latest firmware, because the phone came with

"android version
2.3.6

baseband version
N7000DDKL1

kernel version
2.6.35.7-N7000XXKL3-CL793489
root@DELL136#2

build number
GINGERBREAD.XXKL3"

and i got an update through kies and updated it to "N7000DDLA5"..and yeah coming to think of it, after updating, the phone only froze once when unlocking the screen. hmm so what do u think? should i forget about it or should i go for a replacement?

The number one thing you don't want to use is a task killer.
why do you say so? will it create problems or something? but i find that when i kill apps shown in the Advanced App killer, some 50-100mb RAM is getting cleared...but just for a few minutes and the apps again open up by themselves.

Gingerbread, and probably a few android versions before that too, have task killer built in, so you don't need to use any kind of task killer. It'll only make your phone more unstable. I'd reset the phone to factory settings and not use one ever again :)

I mean that the phone stopped responding for a while. I did not actually get to the point that I removed the battery because the phone did recover, but it was in its own world for about 30 seconds (an eternity for this phone).

I would not say that I had rather frequent crashes of applications. I have had two or three in four weeks. Given the use my phone gets, that is virtually none. But yes, I have also seen your points 1-6, just not frequently.

I was using the same (original) firmware as you for about three weeks and just got the update you also just installed. I would say the phone was equally stable with both firmwares. It could be that your original firmware was badly installed or something wierd was going on. Just watch the phone for a while and see if you notice patterns in the crashes. It could be one or two applications that are causing the problems.

If after some observation the phone is still acting random then try for the replacement.

This is because you were killing background tasks that were considered to be vital by the OS. When it noticed they were gone, it simply restarted them. Just ignore the memory usage of your phone. It will happily look after itself ;)

The only reason I kill apps is if they are using lots of processor time (and only if it is one of the apps I started) to save my battery.

Hi There,

i just bought the Note here in a local Store in India. Its freakingly Awesome.

Just had a doubt, when scrolling on Music player, the scroll moves slow and sometimes its like too slow (worried coz its dual core and stuck up in Music player)..

I use 16GB class 2 Sd card, I this the cause of problem? I only updated to the new N7000DDLB1 ver.

How can we check the processor performance..

Just how hot is hot? Mine NEVER has gotten more than "a bit warm" to the touch; perhaps around body temperature, when Im running a processor intensive application.

If your's is "burning" then i would suggest something is wrong. I run it in an ambient temp of around 20-22deg c. If your ambient is higher, then of course it will run hotter. Im not sure these devices should be THAT warm. My son has htc sensation which is dual core 1.2mhz and his runs a similar temp to my n7000.

So if you're using Sat Nav / Vlingo (in-car mode) & playing music, your Note doesn't hot?

Mine gets scalding - never had any phone that used GPS for Sat Nav that stayed cool.

No it doesnt get hot... not that ive noticed. Will check with GPS in a minute. Am on skype call with it at the moment and and its a steady 41 degrees according to the battery temp meter and its 8mins in to the conversation.

ok for the last 10 mins or so, running music player thru phone speakers, ie using the internal amp, bluetooth on, gps ON, Wifi On, Skype running, the temp has actually gone down to 39degs celcius.

to touch it's luke warm-cool.

What about voice input in car mode? (i.e. listening for voice input).

Maybe mine has a problem, but I have that running with the gps, charging in the official samsung car dock and the phone gets really hot.

:-) running out of things to switch on to try and heat this up!

How do I switch on Voici input? will give it a go if you can let meknow

On second thoughts, the phone heating up might be combination of Voice input, sat nav and the fact that it gets charged in the car dock!

Hey guys thanx a lot for all your help!! I have gotten a replacement for my phone just yesterday evening. Now the new phone doesn't get as hot as the old one and only gets slightly warm while charging which is natural. Plus the firmware which comes with the phone itself is stable and I have been using it for a day now and it hasn't restarted automatically or hanged or frozen or the apps crashed till now. But there's one tiny bit of a problem which bothers me a little.. The bottom left corner, like 15% of the screen, has a slight red tinge to it...I dont know if it because the display needs to warm or something or hopefully it will go away with usage...but what do you guys think? Is it something that I must worry about?

Oh man, you have the worst luck. Is your screen brightness set to the lowest level (which I have)? This tends to emphasize blemishes in the screen. But I would not be happy if 15% of my screen was miscoloured and would be back to the shop, again. My screen (as far as my eyes can tell) is pretty much perfect although I do see the grey banding problem that a lot of other people are having, but I can ignore that.

You have my sympathy sir...

1. I have heard that it is possible to turn of the camera sound by opening the camera app and then clicking on the cog icon (settings) in the top left corner of the screen and scroll down until you find the option to turn the sound off. I cannot tell you more though since my phone does not have this option (I heard that the sound is legally required in some countries). Have a look, perhaps you are lucky.

2. Go into settings->sound and look for the "Audible Selection" option and turn this off. This turns this click sound off for me along with all the other screen selection confirmation clicks.

3. Go to settings->Location and security and select "Use visible pattern" (you will need to set a pattern that you will "draw" to unlock the phone). After this pressing the home button will simply show the draw pattern to unlock screen very briefly (2s or so) before the screen turns off again.

Hope this helps...

Eric Ritchie.

Nooooo........pls dont tell me this is a permanent problem!! i bought it from a site that gives 30 days replacement guarantee and now that 30 days are over....i cant go and tell them about this again...is there no way that this red tinge will go away with use or something?? oh man i dont want to take my brand new phone to the service center....who knows how clean they handle it in india..once i took my mom's nokia 6303c to the nokia service center to change the screen and when it came back, there was dust sticking between the frame and the screen....i dont want that to happen to this too.....man i better just kill myself. loss after loss. keeps on coming.

First of all, don't kill yourself, you get really bad 3G reception in the afterlife ;)

I honestly cannot tell you if this is a permanent problem since I have not experienced it. Have you tried adjusting the screen brightness to see if this problem goes away?

BTW: Nokia phones were always bad for dust collecting behind the screen cover. I believe that the Note screen is prety much a self contained unit and factory sealed. I saw a picture of a screen that had been swapped out on a Galaxy SII and it looked more or less like the complete phone. So there should not be the same issue.

Sorry for scaring you!

Regards,
Eric Ritchie.
