Root Rooting Questions

I have a rooted Thunderbolt, but I'm having a replacement unit sent to me because mine has charging issues...

From what I gather, I'm going to have to flash the original unit back to stock before returning it to Verizon. And then once I get the new one I'm going to have to root it.

So I have two questions:

1. Does anyone have a link to a ROM that will return my phone back to stock?
2. Can anyone provide me with directions for rooting my new TB on a Mac? From what I've read online, the new Gingerbread OTA has mucked this process up a little bit.

Thanks!

heres how to unroot

http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/418539-thunderbolt-root-unroot-thread.html

its about halfway down in the first post. "how to unroot" is big and bold. it was a very simple process. make sure you put a rom back on! i made the mistake of not doing that and wondered why my phone didnt work. there are links in the post for the rom to d/l

as for the MAC, i have no clue on that.

good luck!

Thanks for the link...

But I didn't see anything in the post about rooting with a Mac...

why are you returning it? manufacture warranty or insurance claim?

manufacture warranty requires root to be gone, insurance does not.

i returned my rooted TB when i had an insurance claim and never had an issue

It's stopped charging correctly, and the charge cord has a lot of wiggle room when it's plugged into the port. I called Verizon this morning, and the rep said that the manufacturer warranty doesn't cover this issue, but that warranty expired two days ago. So this is being covered under insurance.

They're sending me a new one, which I will receive tomorrow, and I have to send this one back. They will then inspect it for physical damage, and she warned me that they could charge up to $299 if they find anything weird (which there shouldn't be).

So are you saying that they don't require for it to be returned to stock?

its a personal decision honestly. if you dont feel comfortable returning a rooted phone, then by all means unroot.

my wifi went out on mine, but because my screen was cracked, i had to go through insurance. other posts i saw said unrooting wasnt required for insurance claims, so i figured i'd be ok. diamond wireless (my wireless insurance company) never contacted me regarding the issue and never billed me anything.

so again, if you feel uncomfortable sending it back in its current condition, then spend the time to unroot. you'll learn something new, so it wont be a wasted effort.

good luck :)

I don't even know what revolutionary is...I rooted using the adb commands (which I just followed line by line) from an old post on how to root using a mac...

What directions do I need to use to return my back to stock?...all of the directions in the link above are extremely complicated and written in Greek...

if your turning it in under insurance, they do not care if its rooted or not. this is the first time ive heard that $299 thing... i thot that they charged a $90 deductible, period. bricked, booting, drowned, lost, run over by car, whatever.

at any rate, you have the "old school" 1.04.2000 eng hboot,so you do not need the adb commands to remove revolutionary hboot.

go to http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/418539-thunderbolt-root-unroot-thread.html and jump down to the section about putting stock fimrware back onto the phone.

all you need to do is that... just download the 2 files, make sure to flash no-hboot first, hboot only second. you can put them on your sd card one at a time and flash in hboot. all you need to do is download and transfer those files,so if a mac does this youre in good shape :D option 2 would be to download the files right to the phone(please check md5s before flashing!)

sorry,i cant help you there. there are only downloads of revolutionary for windows and linux,no mac.

you techincally could use a mac and adb to root 2.11.605.9(using fre3vo for temp root to rewrite the misc img and donwgrade) and root old school like you did the first time, but revolutionary is quick and easy. the download is small, the time it takes to run is short(literally 10 minutes or less) and it would be much easier to simply borrow a windows laptop or desktop

I just recently used an app called HTC Thunderbolt Restore to bring my rooted phone back to stock. Worked like a charm.

Thanks, Scotty...I'll do that...

But I just want to verify one last time that do not have to unroot my old phone...I don't want to have my claim denied because of that...:)

that is my basic understanding... you pay premiums and a deductible for the convenience of replacing it,period. but like i said, ive never heard someone say anything about the "up to $299" thing mentioned above,so maybe your policy/coverage is different?

im not an asurion rep,so defiantely dont take my word for it. ;) it may be worth your time to call asurion directly(not verizon) and ask about your policy.

Scotty,

I'm going to be safe and go ahead and unroot the phone just so there's no chance of them denying my claim...

But I do have one question...

After renaming and flashing the second file, do I need to delete it from my sd card to complete the process, or do I leave it on there?

Also, are there any other sites to use to download both PG05IMG files? The multiupload.com site doesn't exist, and without paying their fee the www.wupload.com site requires a ridiculously high waiting period before downloading and then an absurdly low download speed.

When downloading the PG05IMG files to my PC in order to unroot my TB, will I need to unzip the folder before transferring it to my phone and flashing it in hboot?

The reason I ask this is because I transferred over the unzipped file, and when I tried to verify the md5 checksum through Scary Alien, I get the following message:

"Nandroid Verification Failure.

PG05IMG.zip: 129 lines read, 0 existing files, 129 non-existent files

Could not verify any files in the '/mnt/sdcard' directory.

The selected file does note appear to be formatted like an nandroid.md5 file.

No it needs to be a zip file to flash in hboot

No it needs to be a zip file to flash in hboot

Then what am I doing wrong?

When I downloaded the zip file, everything was put in a folder with a "Z" across it. I then transferred the entire folder over. When I tried selecting that folder and do a md5 checksum on it, I got the above error.
