Are you sure of that? It makes sense, but there's a strong memory I have of an update for my 8330 when Verizon took over Alltel; my Blackberry was up to date but was on the cusp of a roll-out for an upgrade when the takeover happened.

There was controversy in the forums and even with the Verizon and Alltel techs (no surprise there) as to whether or not it was expedient to accept the latest Alltel update at that particular point in time.

Some went ahead and accepted the new software. I did not as didn't most others preferring to await the Verizon version.

The accepted updates could only be partially seen by the Verizon version once the roll-out in our area invoked and people were streaming to their (formerly Alltel) Verizon stores and waiting in line to have their Curves updated.
 
Its the little things keeping me from going for it. I like having embedded pics in gmail, i like being able to open links in apps like twitdroid. I am really anxious for 2.1, but I can wait until it comes out working properly, for the most part

It's a smart phone. It eats battery at an incredible rate. There's no fix for that, except turning off mobile network, etc.

N1 won't do better on battery than your Eris with a battery upgrade, yet cost a lot more money.

The Seidio slim extended battery, class 6 SDHC card, and the 2.1 upgrade - now the Droid Eris is what it was supposed to be. With 2.1, EVERYTHING is faster and I'm LOVING Google Nav. Money.
 
Oh My Life! I was a little nervous because I have never done something like this before. But I flashed my Eris and I am so glad I did. Easy as pie. My Eris is running better than ever. One thing I have noticed in particular is that the touch screen is smoother and more responsive. Things seems more stable than with 1.5.
 
^That's good news. Hopefully there won't be any problems for you when the real update comes out.

Although it will certainly be entertaining if things went wrong for those who installed the leaked ROM. ;)
 
The thing about that leaked article is that it doesn't provide any footnotes. For example, how does the author KNOW this:

You should know that if you’ll try to install the update by yourself it might ruin your phone because you don’t have assisted service available and also when the official update will be released you’ll not be receiving it OTA and also the possibility to perform a downgrade to the 2.0.1 version of Android is very small , meaning that if you upgrade your Android there is no point of return.

It's just some schmuck on a blog trying to feel important. He's sensationalizing the story to try and get more hits and spark discussion. It's nothing different than the papers and their scare tactics.

I'll start an Android blog right now and post scary stories about my phone and the 2.1 leak. Watch,. It'll end up getting qu oted somewhere on this ofrum. And that's what they want.

The XDA developers seem to be the most reliable sources, outside of HTC and Verizon themselves.. Anyone else is just working off of a tip.
 
Guys, if you brick it, who cares. It's under warranty. Sure it's an inconvenience, but you can get it replaced or the techs at the store likely have a tool for a reflash to the original configuration.

That is quite true, however I still ask the question, "why bother with this when the official 2.1 is forthcoming?"

I've seen some answers to that: 1. it's fun (no argument with that), 2. the official release will still come to my phone whether I have the leak in it or not so might as well have the flawed version now (seems weak to me, like being intimate with a girl weeks prior to her curable disease clearing up), 3. why not? (read the bugs and fixes thread). ;)

One last thing; I am not certain, but I'll wager that with the finished, official release of 2.1 we will not see posts such as this one in the "...2.1 when" thread:

"Hi. I recently installed the leaked 2.1 and it was working nicely. Then I started getting problems and force closes so i did a hard reset and now when it tries to program the phone via *228 it fails."

Yo know what, I had a big, well thought out repsponse going, but then I relaized something -

Niether I, nor anyone else who wants to wait, needs to answer yours or any other question, or justify our decision to anyone.

You wanted to update, Good!! Thank you all for the information. It is definitely tempting and has been an interesting read.

However, I (and several others)would prefer to wait for the OTA. That's all needs be said on the matter
 
I personally jumped right in and loaded 2.1. I love the Google Nav, and I already had a hacked Telenav on mine. Goggles is ok, the speed bump is ok, and my phonebook went from 238 friends to 1100 thanks to Facebook sync, so that was a nice ego boost.
Can I live without 2.1 and wait for the official rollout? Yes. Do I want to? NO WAY!! :)
And people are worried about BRICKING? If it bricks, just call VZW and tell them your phone isn't working and they will send you a new one :)

I'll admit it's very hard to hold out, but it will make me stronger! Haha.
 
Actually -- for me, at least -- even this early version of 2.1 patched more oil leaks than it introduced.

And not directed at anyone in particular, but ... I'm honestly a little surprised by the level of vocal snark expressed by a few people who've decided they aren't comfortable trying 2.1 yet. If you don't want to partake that's fine ... but spreading all the FUD is actually a little sad.

That said, if anyone really finds unproven tech to be that freaky, I think I've still got an old land-line phone in the basement that I'd be happy to dive away. I think it's even got a dial on it ... so the underlying technology should be fairly well tested by now. :)
 
Most are waiting, so don't feel like the Lone Ranger (check the poll stats).

The "oil leak" analogy is one, but there's another that works even better for me: A nearly finished version of the final build was leaked, so I want to take a chance instead of waiting for the completed project.

Oops, that's not an analogy, it's reality.

To be completely fair that poll could be a little skewed by people voting that don't even have a Eris and the fact that many who did update still haven't stopped playing with their phone long enough to vote.

Those ticking either choice could be sub-catagorized into groups that could vote either way or no way, etc, including changing their mind after voting. It's called margin of error in all polls.

Meanwhile we sure do have a general idea of what's up with users of these forums, it appears. Otherwise we'd see a landslide one way or the other. I honestly expected to see very few of us waiting for the OTA, me being the "by the program" type, which seems rare around here. I was mistaken in that expectation.

Does it get boring saying the same thing over and over again? Because it's getting boring for me on the other end. If you don't want to do the leak, power to you :P. Some of us are impatient, and willing to take the risk.

This is the last time I defend my decision to install the leak. It was a calculated risk that i'm aware of the consequences, so don't make it sound like i'm illogical or an idiot for electing to do it.

Some people have had to call into verizon after a factory reset to reassociate the phone to their account...

This is probably the official version anyways....

Why wait when sitting on 1.5, which is full of bugs of its own? 1.5 has gone through a number of updates and the youtube player still wont work for one. They are basically abandoning 1.5 as they know it is a flawed OS. You can search the forums and find a lot more problems with 1.5 then 2.1 right now.

Its easy to pick on the new guy from the other side of the room..come over and say hi and you'll see he's a hell of a guy.

This is definitely no risk. The eris was made to have 2.1.
