Root Trying to root and I guess I'm just not getting it...

After reading thread after thread I am beyond stuck. I am running a Droid X android version 2.3.4

I downloaded z4root, installed, ran it, got a "stopped working unexpectedly error"
restarted
same error
uninstalled, cleared downloads,
restarted
REdownloaded
installed
restarted
ran the app....same error...and again the second time.
There's no "super user" app in my drawer.

Now after reading a few other threads with similar errors, I see I need to down grade? Is this correct? I was hoping there would be a simple one click root option like there was when I had my eris...but I'm not finding anything....anything that works for me anyways :(

Its admittedly been a while since I've messed with my Droid X as far as rooting goes, but I believe that Z4root only worked with Froyo.

To root Gingerbread (2.3.x) on the DX requires the Droid 3 root exploit:

although I'm not sure if it will work if you've taken the .621 OTA update (from what little I've read, you'll need to have used OTA Rootkeeper to save root before taking the .621 update in order to be rooted afterwards).

The other fine, more up-to-date root guys should be along here soon to help with their hard-earned wisdom.

Scary is correct. z4root only works on Froyo.

If you are on 602 or 605, you can use the instructions here (just skip the SBF stuff):

If you are on 621, it gets more complicated. You'll have to SBF to Milestone X software 604 and then root. Here's the thread about that:

To find out which version you are on, go to About Phone and look for the System version.

I'm on 621 I started reading over some of that stuff but I get a few sentences in and get lost :(
 
hmmm....maybe take it back to verizon for some "charging issues" and get a new/refurb DX that will not be on 621?
 
I would think a refurb would be flashed to the "latest and greatest" from VZW, but rooting 621 is not that bad, u just need to become a Linux expert overnite.. ;)
 
Hang in there man, was in the same spot you were in. You need to go back to the link provided and slowly read over it several times. There is more then one way to root, load roms, and do factory resets. Be ready to sbf (Which basically means unroot and factory reset) because you'll prolly fail a few times. You should really spend at least on hour reading these forums and searching google for your questions.

It can screw with MMS and some other stuff if you stay on the Milestone build. Just flash a secondary ROM after rooting that way and you'll be good to go.
