You will need to use Odin in order to root your device . Use this version if you want the FA19 update :

DOWNLOAD FA19 Gingerbread Rooted Image with CWM5 by Koumajutsu

It is located in the first post in the thread

Here is the link to the Odin thread :

http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...ock-factory-updated-02-23-new-fa19-image.html

There are other versions if you do not want the FA19 update . The same installation method applies to each of them .

Tried everything and followed the instructions to the letter. I'm in debug mode and SD card unmounted. I've repeated the process far more than 10 times. Still fails for the same reasons others list. My system basically says it is read only. I have Gingerbread FA19 loaded. The Odin processes work, but I want a stock phone that is rooted. When my phone keeps prompting for an upgrade and that fails it's just annoying.

Hold on a minute . You're saying that the process fails but yet you're saying that the Odin process works . Did I miss something or did you just contradict yourself ? If you use Odin to install the rooted STOCK version of FA19 , you should be good to go .

Have you installed the drivers that comes with the download ? Also , I skip letting Windows update the drivers . Sometimes that will mess things up .

EDIT : If you can get root I would try this ROM . It is basically stock and you will need to flash it in CWM .

Of course I'm new at this but have been looking at posts from here for a few days now trying to decide if I want to really root my cell. I just want to root it so that I can remove some useless apps and install a few others since the memory in this phone is deplorable to say the least. Might do more once I read up on more customization tricks. Long story short, I've decided to and I tried the one-click root for my cell from this post. I also called myself making sure I don't repost something that was already answered and from what I see this isn't the case. Here's what I have, what I did, and what I ended up with:

Samsung Galaxy Prevail
Model number
SPH-M820-BST

Android version
2.3.6

Baseband version
S:M820.07 x.FA19

Kernel version
2.6.35.7

Build number
GINGERBREAD.FA19

Hardware version
M820.07

I downloaded and extracted the zip file from the link on this page. Set my phone to debugging mode. Executed root.bat.

* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *

Phone came back up just as it was before I ran the one-click root. Any insight into what I did or didn't do?

Thanks!

From what I understand , the 1click root will not work with Gingerbread . You will need to use Odin in order to achieve root . Here's the link .

Thanks! I just saw on the last page of posts that at least 2 people posted the same errors as I did lol But cool. I used that link to return my phone to stock and it worked just fine. Now I'm going to try the root with CWM and hopefully all goes well :)

Ok i have been up and down this forum.I have the samsung galaxy prevail from boost mobile, when I have the phone off I press the root.bat wait till it turns green then hit a button, then when the prompt says make sure USB debugging is on it goes from green to red at this point i turn on my phone and press enter on the very first samsung logo the one where it also has there website. The program even though i run it as an administrator says cannot create this or does not have permission to do that. Is there a missing step plz help

Edit: Ok i did not see it at first but is it true the one click doesnt work of gingerbread and if so How do i root it using this odin thing?

Definitely watch the video by murderous one on YouTube. Makes it super easy... plus its an already rooted image so bam!

it's as simple as installing a pre-rooted image
or, since most custom roms include root, all you need is the clockworkmod recovery image and the cwm zip for the rom.
Flash CWM with odin following it's instructions, but instead of flashing stick.zip, you just use the rom's zip installer

If you're wanting pretty much a stock phone but with a little extra kick, use Odin to install Rooted Gingerbread, then check out Kouma's Half Ass Rom. Its able to make use of his kernels that truly bring the prevail to life

Just got my Galaxy Prevail today (refurb) and it still stock with 2.2.2. Can I use this one click root method at the beginning of the thread? Or do I need to update to 2.3/GB first?

All the good/current roms are GB based.
Sooooo, yes to both? :D

Sorry, I'm confused after reading through this thread. To achieve root, I should use the one click root method? The phone is on 2.2.2/Froyo and I have not updated to 2.3/Gingerbread yet(OTA).

If I take the system update to 2.3/Gingerbread, I should use Odin to root?

I figured it out. It works on 2.2 froyo. So simple.
After the 2 types of roots for the EVO, this is cake. :D

OTA update will now either fail or will unroot

if for some reason you want to stay on 2.2 then all you need to do is ignore teh update notifications

If you want to upgrade to GB or ICS, you'll need to learn to use Odin

I learned Odin last night and ended up unrooting because the phone bootlooped on every rom I tried. Odin is great though!

Did you try them
on 2.2.2 (ed13 or ee14)
Or on 2.3.5 (ej06)
Or 2.3 6 (fa19)
they well not work on 2.2.2

When you say "try them" are you referring to flashing the rom? Now, I am confused.

Here is what I did. I got the refurb Prevail yesterday. It was 2.2.2/Froyo when I checked. Then I rooted it using the old one click root method. Then I put clockwork using Odin. Then I backed up my stock rom in clockwork onto my sd card. I then flashed several roms and the phone bootlooped on every rom. Waited 15-20 minutes on each. I tried to restore my backup and it bootlooped there. I then had to use Odin to go back to stock and that worked.

Right. I meant flash. None of the newest releases are for 2.2.2 they will only bootloop (with 2.2.2)

They work as advertised on gingerbread
