Sell me on the Nexus

I'm currently using a iPhone 4 but I've had it for about a year so its time for something new. I've been looking at Nexus and the Moto RAZR, I've been leaning towards the Nexus which is why i'm posting this thread in here. All the reviews I've read say the battery life is horrible with the Nexus which is my main concern. I'm a delivery driver and don't have any place to charge my phone during the day. I've read some reviews that the battery barely gets through a 8hr day. I've played around with the Razer and I didn't like how it felt, a little too thin for me, plus I hate Moto Blur.

Just wanted to get some opinions on the phone and if you could trade your phone for the Razr would you? Thanks.

Well i cant compare my Nexus with the iPhone or the Razr because ive never owned either. One thing i can comment on is yes you are right about the stock battery sucking, I could hardly get through a day and that was with light usage.

The stock 1750mAh battery don't pack enough juice for such a powerful device with such a big, High res screen & a dual core CPU ... However i did purchase a 3800mAh battery of eBay for

You must be lucky, Either that, Hardly use your phone during the day or have everything disabled. The weak battery is usually one of the first things people mention that let the phone down.

No issue here with the single strength on a 3G network, I always have 4 full bars ... Well unless i go out into the countryside.

Moderate use throughout the day with only 4g/wifi shut off while at work. Even with 4g on I can still make it through the day with ease. I have made it through the day with no problems while surfing the net and streaming music and only once dropped below 50% by the end of the day. My best has been 28hrs with little use.
 
The stock battery is terrible using 4g, but so is the RAZR..the only 4g phone with good battery life right now is the RAZR maxx. I still wouldn't take it over the nexus though, but if battery life is a huge determining factor, you could pick up extra batteries or an extended for the gnex. I can easily run through three full charges in a day on heavy 4g usage.

Thanks, being on the road all day I hardly use my phone for anything other than calling and maybe a little GPS. I get a 45 minute break where I catch up on emails, facebook, make a call or two and txt messages so I'm not really a heavy user, plus when I'm home i'm on my wifi network.

is there really no way of charging on the go?

I would say it will be fine for you.
I have had mine last several days if I am not surfing on it hardly.
The odd phone call, few text messages a day, a little other stuff like quick surf, and it should last a few days.

Sit there like I do also and go online non stop on a forum, via 3G, and you can take it to 40-50% in a couple of hours or so as well though.

I have had it use battery a lot though, more than normal, which I resolved by a power recycle.
 
Well it looks like i'm picking the up the Nexus tomorrow. One question about the 4G SIM card. I've heard a few different things. If I go to Verizon store I hear they charge you $10, but if you order one online its free.
 
I know of a handful of nexus owners in my area and every single one of them complains about the reception. The Nexus radio is garbage. Get something else.

Only 5 posts, and you're spending them complaining about a phone that it sounds like you don't even own? (And even if you do, you're basing a generalization on a handful of people)

Clearly the radio isn't garbage, as there are plenty of us (a majority, I would venture, even here on the forums where people come especially to complain) who have no complaints about it.

That said, JE78, there are plenty of folks experiencing signal problems, too. My best advice would be to get the Nexus if that's what you want and just try it out. This is what return policies are for. See how the signal is where you are. If it's bad, maybe even exchange for another Nexus to make sure you don't have a dud. If it's still bad, then maybe it's time to think about a different phone - but if the Nexus is what you actually want, it's worth a try.

I haven't had any problems with mine, literally zero complaints. I do have the Verizon extended battery, the 2100 mAh, and I can confirm that some cases do fit with it. When I put a case on mine, I use the Cruzer Lite TPU cases available on Amazon, and they fit great.

Ever heard of an in car charger?
 
Battery life is decent. An extended or spare battery solves that problem.

Build quality is excellent, screen is amazing(4.65 inch 720P AMOLED), the stock Android 4 is awesome, the camera takes pretty good but not great photos but it takes them fast so it makes for a very practical camera, the phone takes good quality 1080p video and lets you take photos while recording video at the same time, it supports NFC and it's really fast.
 
I just got back from picking up my Nexus. At first use I really like the phone. I was playing around with it on the way home and my first complaint was how quiet the speaker was. I was riding in the car with the radio on low to medium volume and could only hear a few of the ringtones at full volume.

I got home and starting comparing my signals with my iPhone and my wife old HTC incredible. My iPhone gives me 4 our of 5 bars, my wife's HTC Inc give her 2 out of 4 bars but the signal strength is -83 DBM with a low of -78, the Nexus is giving me 2 out of 4 bars but the signal strength is only -93 DBM with the lowest i've seen it was -87 DBM.

So i'm not sure if that number might drop once I activate the phone and connect to the Verizon network, I don't think it matters though.
 
Give the Nexus a break on the signal strength. Not sure why people knock on it all the time. It reports low compared to other phones, plain and simple. Not sure why it's like that, but it is. I've owned an iPhone, a Moto Droid, and the Nexus all while working and living in the place I work and live now. Nexus wins the signal competition hands down. I can do the same things in the same places with this phone even with a lower reported signal. I can't count how many times my phone reported 0 bars and NO data connection, yet it still would surf the web, albiet slow like it was a weak connection, but still had a connection.

Bottom line, I've dropped fewer calls with the Nexus than I did with the iPhone and Moto Droid. Matter of fact, can't think of a call I've dropped yet.
 
Razr Maxx is a little thicker than the regular razr and of course, has that awesome battery.

However, if you're comfortable with the idea of putting a new ROM and Kernel on your Nexus, that can hugely improve your battery life. With the 2100mah battery I had trouble making it halfway through the day before running out of juice, but after applying AOKP and franco kernel, I have to actively try to kill my battery to run out before I go to bed.

Btw, the 2100mah Samsung battery makes a completely insignificant increase in the size of the Nexus, and the one I got came with a back cover that looks nearly identical to the stock cover.
 
I got my G Nex a week ago, and couldn't be happier. Was due an upgrade for months and thought I really wanted the Max. Glad I didn't rush to order it and went to the Verizon store to play with the phones. Went in expecting to backorder a Max and walked out with the G Nex. After playing and comparing the only place the Max came out ahead was battery life.

I will look into the the Rooting process. I had a Droid Inc and a Samsung Fascinate but never rooted either one. I'll have to test out my battery life, I did get the 2100mah extended battery so I'll give it a week and see where i'm at. Thanks.

Its probably because everyone's like "OMG it says its getting a lower signal it must be terrible!" I think most of the radio "issues" are more exaggerated than what they truly are. I haven't ever come across a situation where the signal was so bad it was unusable in an area with known coverage. On my VZW Nexus, I get comparable speeds over 3G and 2G (yes some areas here do not have 3G) than what my old Droid Eris did.
 
Verizon Gnex with stock OS, battery doesn't do very well on battery as it is now. I hope upcoming OS update will improve it for non-rooting stock users. But there are some helpful battery tips that were discussed on other threads a lot. The biggest saver is to turn LTE off if not needed. For occasional email, text checking, browsing facebook, 3G/CDMA is just fine. Using WiFi when available makes big difference too. Also avoid SNS apps like Google+, facebook and use stock browser for those. Always be careful when installing apps using auto sync. This way it should last full day.
