Sell me on the Nexus

Verizon Gnex with stock OS, battery doesn't do very well on battery as it is now. I hope upcoming OS update will improve it for non-rooting stock users. But there are some helpful battery tips that were discussed on other threads a lot. The biggest saver is to turn LTE off if not needed. For occasional email, text checking, browsing facebook, 3G/CDMA is just fine. Using WiFi when available makes big difference too. Also avoid SNS apps like Google+, facebook and use stock browser for those. Always be careful when installing apps using auto sync. This way it should last full day.

I think I might be getting the hang of it. I managed to get mine to last 16 and a half hours yesterday. With only maybe a 3 minute boost charge.

It still drains like mad crazy if your doing pretty demanding tasks especially over 3G with pretty mediocre reception.

CDMA radios on Samsung sucks. Should have learned my lesson before.

The gsm version of gnex has less issues.

I ended selling my verizon gnex cause it could not pick up LTE signals where my iPad could or my friends razr could get LTE.

Also speaker volume on gnex is low compared to Motorola.
Try playing a YouTube video on speakerphone and compare it to the iPhone Motorola droid razr.

I had the phone since day 1 in December and was excited. But this phone has its fair share of faults and I haven't addressed battery since its LTE and battery life is so so.

Odd. I get really good 4G coverage. I get 4G in all areas that I expected to get it. But for some reason I guess Verizon got generous and actually made a sizeable portion of SE South Dakota have 4G capabilities, even rural areas. Maybe its to make up for the often shoddy 3G coverage (and speed issues) that plague our area.

Whats the point of having a phone like this if I have to watch how I use apps and can't use 4G, I mean really whats the point of having a phone thats capable of all this if I can't use it.

I had this issue the last time I had Android but I guess I like the frustration because I came back.

I have yet activate the phone, I will probable do it this weekend. I'm just getting all my info switched over from my iPhone right now.

Maybe someone here can get me started. I'm looking for a lock screen. I've seen a few pictures of the one, its the one where you can unlock to the home screen, camera, phone, mail, or txt. I tried using MagicLocker but its too laggy for me. Is that the only option for a lock screen like that? Also, is there a widget or some way for me to get notification on the lock screen kind of like in iOS (gasp) lol

I didn't say you can't use 4G. You definitely can if you don't mind recharging in the middle of day or carrying extra battery. But you did indicate you spend most of daytime with delivery vehicle without way of recharging and use data very lightly. So I gave that suggestion. If you use it lightly on data, it will last 10 hours or more even in 4G.

You might try Widget Locker, it should be in the Play Store. But I suspect that some of the lockscreens you are seeing are coming from custom ROMs, and those can't be reproduced with an app.

thanks, I thought so. Ill keep looking

Just wanted to let you guys in on a test I did today. I charged my Gnex with the 2100mah battery and left it home today. I took it off the charger at 7am, got home and checked it about 5:15pm. The phone isn't activated so the only radio that was active was the wifi. I guess the Cell radio was active as well because its always on. Anyway, I got home at 5:15 and the battery was at 80%. How is this possible? The only app I have downloaded was facebook so that was getting updates. I got a notification about a few other app updates like Gmail and Maps. But other than that the screen was never turned on.

If the only radio that was active was Wi-Fi, that's partly why. Also, if it's in your pocket most of the day, that'll help with battery as well. You can also try Juice Defender once you get LTE, as it'll close off data for 15 or 30 minutes at a time, then open it until everything that wants access to the internet is finished, then it closes again until it's time to enable it. It won't prohibit calls or texts either.

I honestly say update to 4.0.4 as soon as you can that helps A LOT with reception. As of now i always have full bars on 4g and my batter is fantastic. I easily get 20 + hours with moderate use.

I don't think dropping 2% per hour with Wifi on and presumably data syncing (contacts, gmail, facebook, etc) is really bad at all. That'd be 50hrs of standby time. I don't use Facebook, but I've heard of others recommend against using the app and syncing. Personally, I don't recommend syncing anything that doesn't need to be synced. Facebook, twitter, google+, etc. Do you really need instant updates on these services? When you log into the sites or apps, they refresh/update immediately so unless you really need to know every time one of your friends checks into Starbucks, you are way better off leaving them unsynced. I only sync gmail, contacts, calendar, and browser.

Oh, and that big beautiful screen eats battery so I strongly recommend turning it down as low as you can tolerate. I keep mine at 10% indoors and bump it up when outdoors.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I activated the phone and have been trying different settings this week while i'm at work. Monday, I put my screen brightness on auto, left 4G on, took the phone off the charger at 7am, was on wifi for an hour, got home at 5:15pm and was at 60%. I didn't use the phone much while at work, checked facebook and sent a few txts. tuesday, put the screen on 50%, 4G off and wifi off, got home at 5:30 my battery was 50%. I did use the phone a little more but I thought with the 4G off it would be better. I think i'm going to root and update to 4.0.4 and give that a try. I hate having this phone but can't use it, it just sucks the battery dead. Each time i use it I loose 10% of battery life doing small things like sending a txt or checking facebook.

50% is very high for screen brightness in my opinion. I wouldn't run it higher than 30% unless I was outdoors in sunlight. I keep it at 10% indoors during the day and find that to be plenty.

I am outside most of the time. I'm a UPS driver.

OP, not to push, but did you check out Juice Defender? You won't miss anything, and the data is enabled every time you turn on the screen. At least this way, you'll save the juice while the screen's off.

I'm going to give that a try today thanks! Good to see another person from Rochester, NY here.

Indeed then you are.

What can brown do for you? Well, they could put a 12v outlet in their vehicles!

Isn't that the truth. I have to hull around a 18v battery for my Ryobi radio. Would be much easier having a cord to an outlet.
