That's a good call, EarlyMon. Perfect amount of time until the pre-order starts and enough people that haven't heard about it to catch on.

I believe that it's at the bottom of the phone this time, rather than near the camera as before.

One of the spec sites, gsmarena or such, indicated that this model included Swype. If they're wrong, check out Flex T9, it's a better swiper, imo.

Advantage to web pre-ordering: sometimes, you can get a call and end up with the phone before launch. I got my 3vo on launch day, aka 2 days after a bunch of others here got their early bird deliveries. :D

Otherwise, choice of retailer is a personal preference, but hint, don't let Best Buy set up your phone and sync it with your old one. They do it wrong.

And like the 3vo pre-release, and unlike other releases, I am thinking about splitting this thread into handy parts so that the inevitable discussions and answers to come have a landing zone so people can find speedy answers as they join along. Then immediately make a table of contents sticky.

I'm thinking, quad vs dual core, screen technology, all things sd card, all things MHL or HD Link, etc etc.

What do you think?

I think its a stellar idea, EM. This thread is getting a little long and bouncing around from topic to topic, making it hard to follow. Splitting into various subjects like you have mentioned would be a great idea.

Yeah, the more I think about it, this was all a part of RumorVille until yesterday, now it's getting into facts.

Let's leave this open as general pre-release chat thread, and if incoming posts strike gold, we can spin them into threads as we go along.

I'll wait until later to allow further feedback, and unless you all don't like it, this will be our plan. :)

Yes. Completely agree. Better to do it now than later down the line when there's an overwhelming amount of posts/threads.

Should the stack of announcement day vids go into the review sticky? I'm thinking so.

Any ideas for categories beyond the ones I suggested?

I like what El Presidente did with One X table of contents, he has placeholders for things that he knows are coming, for example, we have nothing on Beats yet.

Yes. Although I'd name it Preview/Review. It'll allow us to see the progression from before and after release (in case reviewers change their minds about the phone or have comments that they didn't initially make on their previews).

Haven't checked out the whole table of context in the One X forum, so I'll take a look at that too.

Just let me know what post subjects you want me to search for and I'll gather up links and PM you.

There are a few different ways it could be done. Each will see it differently and there is not really a right or wrong way.

This is all my opinion.
I for one kinda like the idea of leaving it all in one thread so that the rest of the open forum doesn't become a dump ground. I dislike seeing lots of new random threads unless there is an actual purpose. Alot of times there is already a discussion on the same thing in the general thread...

If we have one area that can be for everything in general before the release I think it is much better for everyone. A lounge of sorts? Certain, important, new, or popular topics can be broken out into their own threads with discretion, like the battery thread was a pretty good idea. But we don't need multiple threads with similar info or too much bleed over. If we start a battery thread then I don't want to read about battery info in the general/lounge thread.

I much prefer keeping up to date with one or two main threads, even if they are a bit watered down, as opposed alot of different threads each of which get watered down when we have no new info. It makes it easier when there is a go to place.

I imagine a really good FAQ thread and a really good thread with all major and important info we know so far in it would be a good first stop for new people if they can just take the time to notice the sticky threads and read up a little on things. I wish there was a better way for people to notice the sticky threads since they get looked over so easily most of the time it seems.

The Evo 3D forum was awesome at first when most of the chatter was kept to one area and all the threads were on 1 page. There was even a light hearted thread or two just for funny ideas. It was fun and easy to keep up to date with things. Eventually stuff starts getting broken out and multiplying though. It even had less posting than the Evo 4G did - that got way out of hand after a while where I just gave up trying to keep up with any threads because there were too many going at once. The more we can prevent things from going down hill the better.

Also, can we take the nickname out of the sticky thread. If I was visiting and saw a strange name up there it would really throw me off. All the different pet names and acronyms make it hard to know what people are talking about sometimes. Although fun, they are not conducive to quality posting. My general rule is think of my reader/audience anytime I write. Which is why I typically end up revising a majority of all of my posts :D

I wish I could help out more.

Could the SIM card be hiding under the label, perhaps? It looks like part of it is a flap that comes up. Otherwise, I don't see one. I think you're right that the silver part next to the label is the charging/HDMI port (assuming they're one and the same).

I'm going to stop obsessing over the SIM card now. It's getting unhealthy.

Early... thanks for the tips. One follow-up question.
I am leaning towards Best Buy. I saw that someone had posted that BB was paying pretty good for old Evo's.

Are you suggesting that I just pick up the LTEvo box from them and activate it myself? Can this be done via Sprint's site, or do I have to go into a Sprint store? Apologies for the newb question.

There is another removable panel on the lower part of the phone too - probably not user removable or for techs only. Like Early postulated, it is probably where the speaker is hiding, and why there is a slot there for sound to escape as well? Maybe there is a LTE SIM down there under the panel too?
Overall I'm guessing there isn't a SIM or it is embedded further.

Best Buy now has an email sign up page for when pre-orders open:

I don't know how they got my info but they emailed me to have me sign up for more info on that page above. They must have used lists from the Evo 4G pre-order or release?

Best Buy activates it for you in store, rarely will they let you leave the store without activating since it is probably against their policy. They probably want to prevent people from reselling phones on their dime (not sure about if you order it online). They can also transfer info and contacts from your old phone if you request it. Early is mentioning not to let them transfer your contacts or set up your email and stuff.

If you order on Sprint.com and they ship it to your house then you get to activate it yourself ;) Welcome to the forum by the way.

Never sweat a question around here, we were all new here at some point. ;)

You can take it home and go through self-activation, it's a simple, automated process - or let them do it.

Thing to avoid is them connecting it to their big box resource to transfer contacts. You'll get your Google contacts scrambled into local contacts and end up needing to start over. Same thing wrong with HTC Bluetooth setup transfer between two HTC phones.

Check back as we get closer and we'll walk you through backups and preparing to transfer if you haven't done it before.

I never, ever, ever let the tech's touch my device. One time one of them wanted to throw a task killer on it and I threatened to terminate the sale on the spot if they touched my phone. Lol.

Best Buy process is so easy. And yes, I posted a link w/ the info about them offering $100 back for old EVO's that you trade in and there was no specifics about it being anything other than the phone.

This is all you need to do, when upgrading through Best Buy.

- Pay for $50 pre-order
- They have you fill out paperwork with # and Name
- On release day, they'll call you based on what number you are on the pre-order list and tell you that your phone is ready to pick up (YMMV because different best buy stores follow different protocol) (Oh, and for those that don't know, YMMV=Your Mileage May Vary)
- When you go in to pick the phone up, when they're going through processing the purchase, just ask them (nicely) if they could just activate the phone w/ the box, but you'd like to set the phone up yourself.

That's it. Once they've done everything they need to do with their system and go through the check out, you walk out of the store with your new LTEvo activated. What's better is, at that point, you can just take the phone home and charge it to full battery first, prior to any use. Just makes for peace of mind that the battery will be conditioned properly (even though the new batteries are not supposed to need conditioning).

Hahaha...I'm the same, except when it comes to my secondary phones (although, never threatened to terminate the sale before). Even then, I remember when they were activating an upgrade for one of my secondary lines, the girl starts throwing away all the packing plastic. Luckily, I was nice about it (since she was pretty darn hot) and said, "Um, would you mind just putting all the plastic into the box? I prefer keeping that stuff, in case I decide to sell the phone later down the line."

It all depends on the store and sales associate. Every time I've asked they have quickly shot down the idea and been pretty strict about saying they CANNOT do that. Even when asking extra nicely or trying a second time they have been stern. Being stern back like IOWA didn't work either - he must have given them 'the look' with those crazy eyes. So it is as you guys say; Your Mileage May Vary.
 
I let them activate it, then insist on a few quick tests to see that it's all working. I call the associate, someone else, check out GPS, the basics.

But I happen to know and trust my sales associate, so there is that.

Yeah, I guess the area plays a factor too. In L.A., there are so may Best Buy's. From my house, there are 4 within a 10 mile radius.

Quite a few up here too in the home of Best Buy. Maybe they play by the book here since HQ is in town.

They are closing 3 or 4 stores here, and I suspect we are one of the test beds for the new standalone Best Buy Mobile stores. In fact I think there is one in Mall Of America already.
