Is The Moment Better Than The Sprint HTC Hero?

Where did you find the software to emulate the hero?

Pandahome or GDE in the market place. You have to download either one of these home replacements and then search for a hero theme to match. You can also get lockbot which will emulate the lockscreen from the hero, nexus on or droid.

Ok I have had both of these phones for a month and the moment is better overall. Im have compared each phone and any feature that the Hero has the moment either has or can get with customization. Customization is the purpose of android anyways.

Hero - Android 1.5 W/Sense UI

Pros:
1. Sense UI
2. 5 megapixel
3. Led Notification/Trackball Notification
4. Battery Life
5. Can take out SD card without removing battery
6. Very loud speaker phone

Cons:
1. Auto-Backlight fluctuates and flashlight apps dont brighten the screen
2. Trackball tends to light up randomly
3. Lag issues
4. No camera button

Moment - Android 1.5

Pros:
1. Physical & Onscreen keyboard
2. 3.2 Camera with flash and self portrait mirror
3. 800 Mhz processor
4. Optical Trackpad & touch buttons
5. Dedicated camera button
6. AMOLED

Cons:
1. Battery life is a problem with some device but not all
2. Plain android stock software
3. Have to remove battery to take out SD card
4. Average speakerphone

Conclusion:
Ok well if you compare these 2 phone straight out of the box the only thing that makes the hero better is that it has Sense. But lets not forget that the reason for android is that you can customize it however you like which is why I have customizeed my phone to perform similar to sense. I have beautiful widgets that replicate sense's flipclock and settings widgets. I have twidroid pro which give better notifications and widget than peep on the hero. I have Mxing Music Player which is just as good as the hero music player. Also I have Smooth Calendar which copies the calendar widget and also the moment comes with moxier mail which Exchange built in. Finally Im running Pandahome and I have 7 screens just like the hero does. So basically I replicated the entire hero software and put it on a faster processor with better hardware. To me the moment is hands down the winner. Also, for people thinking well the hero has a better camera. There is NOT a big difference in quality when taking pics. You will only notice the difference when printing pics. Plus you cant even take pics at night on the hero. Also after the 2.1 update how much are you gonna keep like Sense UI??????? After awhile it will get old and the slower processor will lag. While the moment will be able to have 2.1 and can be customized however you want to replicate any new home software that comes out.

I am currently running pandahome with the nexus one theme and the hero style flip clock. It is almost identical just no live wallpapers. It has the same looking wallpapers they just arent live. The icons are even the same as the nexus one.

well if u havent heard 2.1 is running on the eris and hero and everyone cant get over how FAST it is so the theories of it being slower with 2.1 can go in the trash can and it doesnt matter people with the moment still want to be like the hero they want everything the hero has widgets social integration even if it is just software

No really cause I had the hero for months before returning it. The widgets are great but the social intergration is just ok. The built in facebook doesnt show all of the status updates and you have to goto the contacts in order to check them there is no notification system. Plus most ppl I see with a hero always have the facebook app from the marker like everyone else. LO!As far as twitter peep is pretty good but twidroid and twicca are better. Plus after awhile ppl gare going to get tired of sense and want something else then they are going to get a home replacement app.

I was in the same debate as everyone. I talked with a person that had both the hero and moment. He said he dropped the Hero for the keyboard of the Moment. He said that the Hero was better all around this includes the speed and all. He said the Moment would lag at first. The phone had to wake up first to have it work decently. He also said that he would go back to the Hero in a heart beat but couldn't because he needed the slide out keyboard and couldn't get use to the virtual keyboard.

You should play with the moment for yourself. Cause i dont get lag unless i have alot of apps open. I got lag sometimes on my hero. But i got lag alot less on the moment. But that is what a taskiller is for to kill taks you arent using so that it wont lag.

task killers do NOT help the only way they help is if u have a misbehaving app that is it the list of tasks you see running are not running but they are waiting for you to use them thats what android does thats what makes it good at multi-tasking the only thing you are going to accomplish by killing tasks is hurting the performance of phone and wasting batter by making each program u kill have to start up again when u go into them

yea i just didnt want people to read your post and get the wrong idea people already bash there phone enough no need to make them hurt there experience with it anymore lol

samsung left it bare so users could make it what they want... that is what people are doing
I thought it was because they were lazy? :p
Seriously though, I'm glad it's vanilla.

Punctuation is usually nice... but I guess that's what you get when you type on the hero keyboard.
Thanks for the sample. I'll continue to stay away.

Lol you're funny I usually don't use punctuation on the internet. Bad habit I guess.

What about the infamous "airplane mode" vegetative state? I started reading about it last night after my wife got her new Moment. Obviously most in this forum are still partial to the Moment - is it because the Airplane Mode problem isn't as widespread as it may seem or is it because, even though the problem is widespread, it's not a big enough deal to outweigh the rest of what you love about the Moment?

I really don't understand why people think the Moment screen looks better. My wife has a Moment and I have a Hero, I can't get over the blue tint in her screen. We were even watching the same YouTube video on both phones and a family member (who knows nothing about phones) commented how the Hero had a better picture. Other than that they are both great phones.:)

Maybe not too widespread. My wife is on her 2nd Moment (Sprint employee bricked hers installing CL14) and neither went into airplane mode yet.

I beleieve the semi airplane mode bug has something to do with google voice widget/app

nope.. my wife doesn't have google voice on her Moment.. and hers has gone in the pseudo airplane mode at least twice that I know of. that was the main reason I got the Hero.. as far as those that say the Hero lags... mine has NO lag.. for those that "think" the Hero will be to slow on 2.1... there are plenty of Hero owners that are running 2.1 and it i even faster than 1.5..

now... here's my take on the Moment vs Hero argument..

pick the one that YOU like best... if it makes YOU happy then that's all that matters.. BOTH phones have their own little quirks.. it's up to the individual to determine what is a deal breaker or not.

I saw comments about how the Moment users are trying to make their phone look like a Hero.. it's true my wife has asked how she can get her phone to look like mine... and I told her... it's also true that a Hero can't upgrade to a flash or slider.. but the Moment can't upgrade to a 5 megapixel camera.. and it can't upgrade to LED notification.. lie I said.. they both have their quirks..

the only thing that really matters is... both the Hero and Moment run Android..and anyone that runs Android is light years ahead of the rest

These are obviously rooted, no? If I don't necessarily plan on rooting a Hero should speed now and upon the wide release of 2.1 be on the concern list for the Hero?

I'm reading everything I can before I go and play with them both at the store and based on what I'm reading, I change my mind every 5 minutes :)

I'm sure playing with them both (well, the Hero at least because I've already played a little with my wife's Moment) will help make the final decision.

I thought it had something to do with Samsung's CDMA patch? I don't really know what the problem is, but it makes sense that since they had to rig up the software just to make it work with CDMA, they may have left behind a bug or two.

Mine flash twice before my phone vibrates for a text message.... might be the phone waking itself to show the popup, but it works. I don't care, because it's always in my pocket.
