GLBenchmark 2.1.4 Scores with ICS

Shocky

Android Expert
Maybe it's just me but my scores are higher than when I was running on Gingerbread.

First few tests are all vsync limited, the offscreen tests are showing nice improvements.

These scores are higher than the HTC One S with Adreno 225 and not far behind Tegra 3. Amazing for a year old phone. :dancing2:

GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt Standard : 6727 Frames (59.5 Fps)
GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt High : 6720 Frames (59.5 Fps)
GLBenchmark 2.1 Pro Standard : 2984 Frames (59.7 Fps)
GLBenchmark 2.1 Pro High : 2973 Frames (59.5 Fps)
GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt Fixed Time : 47392 ms
GLBenchmark 2.1 Pro Fixed Time : 21986 ms
GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt Offscreen 720p : 6963 Frames (61.6 Fps)
GLBenchmark 2.1 Pro Offscreen 720p : 4344 Frames (86.9 Fps)

Free performance increase which brings Galaxy S II almost upto Tegra 3 level and nobodys interested?

Oh well.

Very impressive.

The thread's had 87 views so more than just us have looked at it. I've not done any comparisons myself yet, so I can only hope I see the same sort of improvements.

For comparision these are older results using Gingerbread from October 2011.

Maybe Samsung updated the display driver or something, the Egypt Offscreen results have more than doubled.

GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt Standard : 6565 Frames (58.1 Fps)
GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt High : 5589 Frames (49.5 Fps)
GLBenchmark 2.1 Pro Standard : 2942 Frames (58.8 Fps)
GLBenchmark 2.1 Pro High : 2965 Frames (59.3 Fps)
GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt Fixed Time : 56910 ms
GLBenchmark 2.1 Pro Fixed Time : 21403 ms
GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt Offscreen 720p : 3326 Frames (29.4 Fps)
GLBenchmark 2.1 Pro Offscreen 720p : 3384 Frames (67.7 Fps)

Here's a screen shot of my s2's results with stock ICS rom (unbranded XEU):-

I believe another forum member said about the improved graphics by comparing the 'four colours' live wallpaper pre and post ICS install..

There was definitely some noticeable banding between the different colours with this wallpaper on 2.3.4 but none on ICS!

So they must have improved the graphics handling some how..

If only my wifi didn't keep freezing when turning it on and off I'd be more than happy with ICS!
;-)

I must say I'm not excited with my new ICS install, which I got recently OTA in my Galaxy S2. I couldn't feel a great difference in performance and I noticed a lot more force closes and slowness than before. It's not enough to put me through the effort of trying to go back to Gingerbread, but if I knew all the effects of ICS I would have stayed with things as they were.

I simply havent got a clue what this is about but I can be suitably impressed if you like.:D

It's a graphics benchmark designed to test 3d gaming performance of mobile devices, it's normally used in reviews to compare various devices including the iPhone and iPad.

If you believe these results the Galaxy S II has more than doubled in performance over the year it's been available due to software updates.

Of course it could also mean this benchmark just isnt very reliable. :p

The off-screen 720p test has me thoroughly impressed. That's the one that shows the fill-rate limit, and in that test the ARM Mali-400 was always trounced by the likes of the SGX540, Adreno 220, and even the first generation SGX540. Every other test focuses more on geometry and shading, whereas this one test highlights fill-rate, and it shows that the Mali has one serious weakness.

But these updated scores show that it was more than likely just a driver issue as opposed to a hardware limitation. As for the performance, this is likely due to driver and API updates. Since you can't download them on your own like on a PC, you're at the mercy of the OEM. On my Droid Incredible I would see performance boosts on Cyanogen because they would always build in the latest ARM driver package for the Adreno 200. The official ROM didn't do this, so until I got the official GB update, performance on stock was atrociously behind CM.

Being a tad behind Tegra 3 isn't impressive so much as it is an indictment on Nvidia. NV has been pushing Tegra out ahead of other chipsets these last two years because they knew it was underpowered. They are still selling a 40nm chipset when the competition is on 28-32nm. They're still using Cortex A9 in 2012, when the competition is focused on A15 and Krait (and yes, I'm aware that the SGS3 might very well use Cortex A9 as well, but if they do, it will be on 32nm). I love Nvidia, but that doesn't mean I'll give them leeway on their screwups :)

Quadrant also showed some impressive improvements between GB and ICS, although not as impressive as this. It jumped from 3300ish to about 4100. I can't find the screenshots I took now, but I did post them somewhere a few weeks ago on one of the ICS update threads.
