Help (VZW) Mobile Data won't connect (randomly)

Getting very frustrated with this phone...

VZW Nexus - purchased on day 1...

At random times, I am not able to connect to 3g (set to CDMA only). As I type this, it looks like I am connected but I can't pull any data. It says I have 3g with 3 of 4 bars - but its grayed out.

I just tried cycling airplane mode and it didn't change anything.

Here is what it shows after a full reboot....full connection to 3g.

This happens randomly and often. A full reboot USUALLY fixes the problem but sometime I have to do it twice. Please help...I have a short fuse and I'm afraid I'll smash this thing against the wall...or maybe just my head :banghead:

Op are you on a VZW G Nex? I assume so. If so would you mind adding (VZW) to the title of this thread please? Thank you :)

Mine does the EXACT same thing, constantly at home. Some days it will hold 3G fine and then others (most of the time) it does this same crap that yours is doing. It will show just full gray bars a lot too and it's just so frustrating because I know the signal is there from looking at the full gray bars, but the phone just won't connect to the signal. It's driving me up the wall. I have already had my phone replaced once from Verizon and i'm currently waiting on the update to see if it helps, but the Razr Maxx is starting to look pretty good to me. I HAVE to be able to use my phone and have it reliable for work. I'm about at the end of my rope.

OP sorry i meant could you put it in the Title? Click edit then click go Advanced. There you can add (VZW) to the title. Thank you very much.

Didn't think I could change the title. I realize now it's under "Go Advanced". Anyway, it looks like you or someone did it anyway. Thanks.

Yup...that's exactly how I feel. I gave my Droid Incredible to my wife and last night when we needed 3g, I couldn't get it to work. She pulled out her phone and had a great signal. Got the Nav directions we needed in 10 seconds flat. My 2+yr old Dinc works so much better than this phone. I love the screen and multi-task button but I'm also at ropes end. Hell, I don't even use the sweet 4g because it chews up juice too quickly. Why do I even have this phone????

Razr Maxx sounds nice but the battery is not interchangable and I LOVE being able to get back to 100% without plugging it in. I rarely plug my GNEX in...I just swap in a new battery and charge the drained one. Never tethered to a charger...

My GSM does the same thing.

Just wondering, why do you have 4 battery status things?

Because I'm fighting with battery issues and trying to figure it out. Something keeps it "awake" and I don't know what it is. Better Battery doesn't show any major "partial wakelocks" so I don't know.

I just go about swapping batteries about 2-3x per day. I can live with that but the lack of 3g will blow my top.

I get this sometimes when I turn off Wifi at work or public places, but grayed 3G bar becomes blue in about 10~15 sec most of time. I think this is some sort of software issue with OS or certain app because it's getting signal but somehow data is stuck. So I'm a bit optimistic this can be fixed with update.

The new software update is coming that fixes these issues just have patience and please dont break your phone by slamming it onto the pavement :D...its coming ok its coming... technically its here they are just doing a soak test

Thank you for the support but how do you know this is fixed in the update?

Every problem I read about on Android is supposedly going to fixed in this update. Hell, I'm pretty sure I saw one person say that this update will give us all white GNex's. Somehow I doubt that!

I'm not being a dick and I really hope it is fixed in the update. If not, I'll do a full reboot. If that doesn't fix, I'll have to move on to a new phone.

That's odd because according to "people", blue signals means connected to google services, whereas grey signals means data is connected but no google services. In other words, if you are seeing 3 grey bars, you should be able to surf websites but you won't be able to sync contacts, get map data, use gtalk, etc.

So, if that is the case, you aren't actually having data connection problems, you are having problems connecting to google services. I don't have a solution, I just wanted to clarify that in the hopes that it helps you find a solution.

That is what I've heard as well but it seems to be sorta conflicted because sometimes I can surf the web when I am gray and other times gray means no data.

I wish someone would know for definite, but on 4.0.4 I have seen this a lot less than on 4.0.2 for what its worth.

it has been posted on engadget and other tech sites that the 4.04 update fixed the wireless signal drops and improves overall reception...P.S "dont shoot the messenger"

I have this exact same problem and absolutely CAN NOT connect to any data when it looks like his first screen shot does. It won't do anything data-wise. So, though what "people" said may be true for other phones, it sure isn't true for my phone when it does this, which is quite often. Even better is when it has the full gray bars and not the "3G" next to it and the bars go up and down up and down and then finally down and there are zero bars, just a black signal meter.

When it's grayed out, I get NOTHING! I can't surf the web, reload facebook, use the google search widget...I even get error messages in games that have ads.

I'll keep my fingers crossed 4.0.4 fixes the issue.

I have this same problem and I can't connect/surf at all when I'm grayed out.

I'm pretty fed up with it.

I have been fed up with it since my first phone, and now with my replacement. I am passed fed up now. Getting a new phone.

Also, for those wondering who are having this problem and haven't installed the new leaked OTA update...the update has not fixed this problem for me. And when I DO have 3G, the speed tests are now dramatically lower in places where they used to be fast. Just my personal experience. You can't fix a hardware problem with a software update, and there's no way Samsung is going to deal with the public relations disaster involved with recalling tens of thousands of devices. Which is honestly probably what needs to happen.

Not trying to be a Debie Downer. Seriously, I'm not. But the update doesn't fix this. It sure didn't for me anyways. I had high hopes that it would, but deep down this whole time, I think I've always thought and feared that it was a hardware problem. I'm almost certain it is now after installing the update. Sorry. Seriously not trying to be a buzz kill.

Why am I not reading more about this issue though? Sounds like only some have the problem but others do not. It's a pretty f'n serious problem. What do others do that have this problem....reboot every time you step into 3g wonderland? Maybe I could set up a Tasker to do that for me????

Also, you think it's a hardware issue but the problem is random and intermittent....seems more likely then that it's software causing the problem? It is fixed after a reboot...

I will probably head into verizon next week and try for a replacement. This happens to me almost every single day.
