Help Can I avoid ICS by not using Kies?

Just bought my S2 and I absolutely love it. It's on Gingerbread 2.3.6.

I also own a tablet (Asus Eee-pad transformer0 that also ran great (it was on Honeycomb when I bought it). But Asus released ICS without any way to refuse it, and now it's very unreliable. Like 80% of all transformers became unstable. It's all over the dedicated forums and Asus has been denying it for way too long, and now they finally are working on a fix.

So I'm very worried the same thing will happen to my S2. I don't know how Samsung deals with updates. I've read that they use something called Kies, but I don't know for sure. So, can I avoid ICS by never using Kies?

Sorry if this a bit of a 'noob' question, but I'm really new to this phone.

Thanks in advance.

You don't have to update it if you don't want to. If it is unbranded the only nag you'll get is Kies telling you an update is available, but it isn't automatic. If you have a branded S2, the carrier my push an OTA update which will notify you and nag every so often, but you don't have to apply it.

Other SGS2 owners here can give you some advice on the stability of stock ICS on your phone.
