Verizon Ending Unlimited Data for Grandfathered Users

They should really release some numbers for this shared data plan before they upset too many customers with this news.

First, no more NE2. Then, no more $5/250 text plans. Then, $30 upgrade charges in addition to $299 handset prices. Now, no more unlimited.

Don't hold your breath thinking the shared data plans will be anything decent. Especially given their recent track record of new fees/charges.

They're getting left in the dust on their current phones (Inc 4G is mid-tier and is all they've announced for sure), and now they pull this crap. Their network is great and all, but eventually, wallets will decide what happens.
 
Verizon's network is unbeatable, but if there is any advice I could give, it would be this:

I made the switch a few days ago and it is simply liberating. Paying $30 a month for what would cost about 80 or 90 on Verizon, signing no contract, having the ability to switch to any GSM provider next month if I decide I like the service better.

I know that some people live or work in areas where they absolutely must have a network like Verizon, but for those of you who don't, I highly recommend looking into this route.

My plan is unlimited. That is the contract. They must honor that contract until it expires. After that they will be able to do what they want. And so will I.
 
Deeply, deeply disappointed by this news. Not surprised, just disappointed. I've been with Big Red for close to a decade now, and believe me I've had to suffer through my fair share of bullshit because of it. This may be the back-breaking straw, though. I'm glad I just did my upgrade a couple of months ago. That will give me plenty of time to shop for a new carrier. Hopefully they don't stop supporting the Razr in 6 months.

True, they are targeting people moving from 3g to 4G, which is a new contract

Yeah the gradual reduction of value for users is very clear that Verizon has become too big, they know they are untouchable. You have to hand it to them, they played their cards perfectly, and now it's time to tighten the noose.
 
NOOOO, I just moved into a city during summer that has a 4g network, now upgrading to maxx for 4g....well i was going to...and now this...idk what to do :(

Nay. I believe it is in the contract that it can change at any time. From what I'm reading on the web, contract or not, its changing for all.

That's why i sold my iPhone 4 and paid full price for a 4G phone and still under unlimited data contract. At least that is still good for another year. One way or another, when contracts expire, there will be no unlimited data. In a few years, there will be no 3G network on verizon, only 4G. Everyone will be tiered.
 
Aren't there other types of plans that are still grandfathered in? I vaguely remember something about that but cant really remember where I saw it or what exactly was said...... it may have just been a dream :D
 
If you are already on a LTE device based on the article it doesn't look like you would be affected. I think it is too early for anyone to fret about this, once they start giving more specifics and some numbers then it should be interesting...

Funny looks like they may try to get rid of those unlimited plans that people got grandfathered into within a year of switching to tiered...I think AT&T waited longer than that.

According to this article, it's for those who upgrade. Not changing the contract you are on.

Verizon will not honor grandfathered unlimited data if you upgrade this summer onward

Switching to 4G before they make the change may be a beneficial to you in the long run if it is possible.

While they have the right to change the contract at anytime you also have the right to get out of it at no cost if they make a change that is adverse to you, they are profit driven and will likely want to keep customers on a contract that will net them $2000 over making a change that could let the customer out of the contract for nothing.
 
*sigh* maybe GSM isn't all that bad after all. If I'm going to get screwed I may as well buy something I like outside of a contract and pop a SIM card in it. I've got a few months yet to go for myself, but when the Asus Padfone or something else I like comes out it might be worth winding down my 10 year stay with Verizon and get used to the idea of getting bent over by AT&T instead. At least I'd have more of a choice of phones on the unlocked market.

Oh well, as the old curse goes, may you live in interesting times......... :musicus:
 
Yeah, now is the time to upgrade if you have unlimited but a 3G phone. You will be locked in to unlimited for two years at least, depending how they treat existing 4G unlimited people.
