Verizon Ending Unlimited Data for Grandfathered Users

This is just great. I can't resign until December! So I'm guessing I'll have to either get a shared plan or go elsewhere.
Curious though, I'm currently on a 4g device, if I don't upgrade or renew my contract would I still lose my unlimited? If not, couldn't we just pay full price for our phones and go on?

It is unclear at this point...The phandroid article was a lot more cryptic than the article in the OP of this thread. I took it from the OP's article that you will only be hit by this if you are going from a 3G only to a 4G device so you may be able to use your upgrade without issues. If that isn't the case (kinda like what the phandroid article says) then paying full price for a phone and not renewing should be fine I would think.

Beginning to tempt me into prepaid plans. Can be alot cheaper, though carrier coverage might be a bit lax. But the savings might be worth it if they keep this up.

Yeah I have data credit on my plan for both my lines...the one that is supposed to be for the life of the line...I would hate to lose it......at this point I don't think we have enough info to draw conclusions but the times they are a changin'

Everything I've read says if your still under contract and your grandfathered in your fine till you add or change a line (so buying used or unlocked phones wont help you),or until your Contract runs out.

Of course, the majority of people who have dealt with Verizon on topics like this will always assume the worst case scenario.

The Evo LTE may be coming to Sprint soon...it looks good

Just saw that lol. Looks pretty sweet too! It's funny, I can go with Sprint and have a very comparable plan and my bill will be the same. I'm in a good coverage area also. :)

I think Sprint is actually a bit less than VZW something like the simply everything plan (unlimited text/talk/data) for $100 but not sure if they have a different plan for familys or if there are any discounts. I would suspect this is going to be a trend with all the carriers to start account allowances VZW is just the first to jump ship on the current model

But, as some folks pointed out, their network is usually only 3G realistically most of the time. And if more folks jump ship for Sprint, their system will go down the tubes unless they make big investments in their infrastructure to improve coverage AND capacity.

Besides, Verizon and AT&T are just doing what they see as best for business and I'm sure T Mobile and even Sprint will be on tiered data within the next year or so. :deal:

AT&T may be later to the game than Verizon, but they at least seem to have belatedly realized that they have to build up their network to be competitive and not just rely on being the iPhone network. And the ability to just grab almost any phone (figuratively speaking) and pop in a SIM card to get going with them is sounding more and more tempting.

If you like Android upgrade to a LTE device now. Verizon knows they will be able to sock it to iPhone users when a LTE iPhone comes out with no complaints from a market segment that's more than willing to overpay for everything they buy.
Yes, iPhone is killing off the smartphone market.

Yeah and Sprint is further behind than AT&T with LTE since they tried to team with Clear and pushed WiMax...bad move on their part IMO...

I am sure tiered data is coming to all carriers...prepaid as well eventually...

AT&T has been pushing people out of grandfathered unlimited plans for a while IIRC...the all you can eat data at a single price is a relic of the past at this point for them (and VZW too really) They had a boost when they were the only US iPhone carrier but finally did realize they can't bank on that forever before it got to the point of no return. I will admit that the SIM card is looking nicer...

Speaking of SIM cards for LTE if you want to switch phones isn't it the same you just switch the SIM from your current phone to the other so I don't know how they would make it so you can't activate a off contract device without tripping this up if you are on unlimited LTE? I know if you drop to a 3G device your SIM is useless but I know of people switching from the Gnex to the TB and back without issues (given they needed an adapter for the micro sim from the Gnex to fit the TB)

Well, Sprint isn't doing it "now" that is currently what matters to me. Should they do it in the future when my contract expires then perhaps I'll move on.
I like lte. I like not having to worry about my data consumption more.

This is a pretty lousy move on VZW part. I chose to go with a 3g phone at my last upgrade because there is no LTE coverage in my area, and no word on when it will be in place. I'm due for an upgrade come July, and have no choice but to go with a 4G phone as that is all they are offering these days. After more than 10 years I never thought I'd say this, but I might have to jump ship. Not sure where to yet, as I really do need coverage in certain areas that at last glance, were only covered by VZW.

All you can eat data at < 1M/120K and latency in the 200s is not really that great of a deal, I'd rather have fast and capped then snail and free. It's like someone giving away dial-up, would you quit paying for your 15M/2M for unlimited 56K (even if it were free?)

Learned my lesson switching to V. To paraphrase Patrick Henry "Give me low latency or give me death"

I hear you. I find recently I turn off LTE most the time unless I really need it. Usually if I need speed I am on Wifi and most things work fine on 3G.

FWIW you can turn off 4G to save battery on LTE phones. I am sure VZW will not be releasing any new 3G only Android phones anymore they plan on expanding LTE beyond their current 3G network by the end of next year. It is the future and they know it.

As I said, I'm in a good Sprint coverage area. I have a friend on Sprint and our 3g speeds are comparable.
And yes, I will gladly take 3g in order to stop taking the shaft from big red.

This would be sortta the last straw for me. Not only have I had a few disputes with them concerning my billing, the end of ne2, upgrade fees, failed billing fee....... I like many others I'm sure, feel unappreciated.

What about people who are on a 4G unlimited plan that has already expired an your just floating along month to month. Then what?

My sister recently ( a few months ago) ditched Verizon and is using an iphone 4 through Straight Talk and loves it. They use Verizon or AT&T towers depending on which phone you have.

Exactly and oh the irony. So the move away from unlimited data, a controversial one by most anyone's standards, must be to free up the network right? Would it be such an issue if the network wasn't being farmed out to other economy providers? Cuz I'm pretty sure I've paid full price for years to build this network to where it is today. So if there's no perks left in being a vzw customer, why not jump ship and use the same network for less? I mean I'm no economics genius but it seems like a sound financial decision. :dontknow:
