Verizon Ending Unlimited Data for Grandfathered Users

I wonder if this will kill the double the data promotions to if everyone has to go on shared plans?

I really don't want to share my data with my teenager and have to worry about whether using google maps will cost me $10 extra.

I checked into Sprint but they require all phones to have the same plan so it would actually be more expensive for us, as all additional phone lines would be $20 instead of $10 and the smartphones would all require an additional $10 monthly charge.

I don't think they will force you to change...if you read the source article for this it is only talking about people going from 3G unlimited plans to 4G plans.
 
:eek: After reading a few comments here and then reading the article...I'm even more confused. Therefore, let me just ask straight out... Since I am already on 4G unlimited, will I be affected? The article seems to say "everyone" but then goes on to talk about 3G. Can someone clarify?

It sounds like the next time you upgrade your phone (after this becomes effective) you will be forced onto the new plan structure. This will be the case whether or not you are switching from 3g to 4g, and will happen to everyone for the next upgrade.

I'm screwed because i usually use about 20 GB a month through normal usage plus tethering.

What kind of data speeds do you get on Sprint? I've only ever had Verizon so I have no clue what it's like on other carriers, but in the Los Angeles area, I am consistently above 10 Mbps on 4G.

I, for one, am very glad I get 2 more years of unlimited data. Not sure where I'll go after that, but the only reason I use more than 4GB per month now is because I can.

It makes sense that they're getting rid of unlimited, especially now that 4G is becoming commonplace. You just can't support that kind of bandwidth forever. Call it greed if you will, it seems like common sense to me though. We all had to know it was coming...
 
I honestly hope that people revolt and tell Verizon to KTA! they suckered us in and then change the rules when it fits THEM and not us? That sucks...how many of us left can there be? Sooner or later the numbers will have to dwindle...then they can do this to the newbies...and leave us old timers (who also supported their sorry #@&(! over the years) alone!

Opinions are mixed right now...based on what I have read I am inclined to say no but we really won't know anything until VZW releases something official.
 
Ehhh, this sucks. I wanted to wait for the S3 to drop before I made a decision to upgrade. What's worse is since it would be and early upgrade this summer, I can't get my wife's phone at the subsidized price. Basically I can't even upgrade before they make the change unless I don't get my wife a phone.

F*ck you Verizon! I am still on 3G, rocking the OG Incredible, and would like to go to 4G just nothing offered right now is worth it to me. I am anxious for the S III and am hoping that I can get that before the changes take effect. At least that will give me 2 years to see how things play out. Unfortunately, I suspect VZX implements it before the S III is released. If that's true, I suspect I'll switch to Sprint and the EVO 4G LTE (hopefully it's cleared by then). I figure if Sprint sucks that bad I can switch back to VZW with no issue since I would lose my data plan anyway. Please release to S III before the changes!

Phone companies are such scammers. I don't know how in the hell they've come to hold the power that they do now.

Forcing you into contracts just so you don't pay out the ass for a phone. ETFs if you don't want to stick with the contract. Oh, and contracts are 2 freaking years. Not like they're 3 months.

They limit your $30.00 internet access. I mean, do you guys know how much $30 is for limited data on a 4" screen is. Anyone ever thought about that?
Verizon now charges UPGRADE FEEs. So, from what I understand, if you decide to stick with Verizon for another 2 years and be a loyal customer to an overpriced monopoly, they'll charge u $25 just to get started. Who the fvck do they think they are?

I was with T-Mobile in my previous contract. My messed up and cancelled my line on April 23rd. My 2 years wasn't up until April 26th and they charged me $100 for being 3 days early on a 2 year contract. So I only completed 727 days of 730 and they wouldn't budge on the ETF.
When the next phone comes out that is just above and beyond every phone as far as specs go, I'm done with contracts and picking it up retail.

I'm glad someone feels my pain. So basically, we have to hope that Verizon has another Buy 1 Get 1 Free special on a good phone before they make the change.

Now I really wish I got the Razr Maxx when that special was running for it.
 
Ok, I'm gonna wade in on this and give you my 2cent take on this topic.

I'm guessing that most of the people who are upset with this latest developement from Verizon and thier doing away with unlimited data plans are people who consistantly use more than 5GB of data per month. You're threatening to jump ship and migrate to another carrier. I'm here to inform you that you're playing right into Verizons hand. They consider someone who uses more than 5GB's of data to be a data "hog" and as such, your leaving and "hogging" data on another carriers bandwidth is "no skin off thier nose" so to speak.

I currently have unlimited data and was glad to be grandfathered into it. However I have 3 phones on a family plan, mine (which I use about .5GB/month) my wifes (.8 GB/mo) and my daughter. (1GB/mo) For this I pay about $86/mo. (not $90 because one phone has a 20% corp discount on the data plan) Anyway, I hoping that the shared plans will maybe cost a little less, but that remains to be seen. I remember writhing about this subject about 6-9 months ago and said Verizon was trying to get to a "Pay to play" pricing structure, and this is one more step towards that goal. If you use less that 2GB of data you pay one price. If you use more than that, you personally have to pay for what you use. Your use of large amounts of data is not subsidized by all the customers that use small amouts of data and pay the same price as the large amount of data users.

Again, just my take on this subject and I could be way off base, but I don't think so.

I'm in the same boat as many here, still on my OG Inc and am due for an upgrade. Just nothing worth upgrading to.

I already called and talked to Sprint, got all their rates, etc. Service appears to be good in my area (Their 3G is somehow faster in my area). LTE is in the first rollout too. I really like that new Evo 4G LTE. I was willing to go with the next Moto or Samsung if nothing was coming down the pipe.... but now it's all up in the air.

I'm not a data hog, I don't tether, etc. I just know that once I have that awesome LTE Goodness in my hand, I'll want to stream a movie when I'm waiting at the doctor's office, waiting on a friend, on a car trip (Passengers seat of course), etc. I know that will all eat up my data. It just seems really annoying to have a fast phone that can do all these neato things they advertise, but knowing that you'll pay thru the teeth to enjoy. Meh.

To make it worse, they're talking about adjusting the home FIOS plans too. WTF? I get it, they want to make a profit. Gouging us to do so is shitty beyond belief.

BUZZ, wrong. As of yesterday when I checked I was at 641mb for the month with my cycle ending the 21st. I only pushed over a gig when I first got my phone long ago.

I don't like being metered, I don't like being forced from what I was told I could have because they find some people abuse it. Instead of dealing with the abusers they abuse us all.
 
I can't help but think this is targeted at all the iPhone 4 to 5 users as they transition from 3g to LTE when the new iphone 5 comes out in the fall.

There are definitely households of low data users which will PROBABLY see a savings initially. But like the CFO said, they are pushing hard heavy data usage tasks and apps, in order to push people into higher tiers. So while a lot of people are low data users now, it won't always be like that.

Also, tiers have two main functions. One is to restrict people's data usage, since many people will try to make sure their usage doesn't exceed their limit, and second is to improve profit margin. VZW's admission that 95% of their customers don't exceed 2 GB, means most of those customers are getting an even worse value than the data is already. And the people that do skirt the 2GB line, if they go over by 100 MB, they have to pay for another full GB of data.

I know if you drop to a 3G device your SIM is useless but I know of people switching from the Gnex to the TB and back without issues (given they needed an adapter for the micro sim from the Gnex to fit the TB)

No - When I was swapping back and forth between my Bionic (while I had it) and my Rezound, I could look on the Verizon internet site for my account and it would tell me exactly what phone I was using - usually within an hour of me swapping out the SIM. I'm not exactly sure how, but they can tell when you've switched phones as fast as you switch them.

What would be an interesting question is what would Verizon do if you only did what you're doing now: switching between two 4G phones you already have after your contract runs out. I'm sure they'd find a way to get your plan switched eventually, but it might help stretch your unlimited data a few extra months. :dontknow:
 
If this is truly the case I will leave verizon for Sprint they have great coverage in my area and thier 4G is fastest enough for me I have used it before...
