Help silence without unlocking phone?

I've been woken by early birds much too many times with this phone and tried pressing the volume and power buttons to no avail. Seems the only way is to unlock the display to drag down the notification bar or open the text or email to shut it up?

Yes if its a phone call I can just slide the ignore to silence it and go back to sleep but emails and text requires a little more work that have me fully awake when I'm done. I'm stock everything. what is this widget locker and does it require root?

Do you ha w really long ringtones for notifications?

i use a widget called go power. I find it to be quite useful for days I don't have to wake up early. You can set a "night mode" were the only thing on could be the phone signal and 4g if you want and then the volume can be set to silent. You can set the time for which this settings will be active and then your normal settings will come back after. I have it on all the time so it does this everyday automatically

Thanks to everybody who replied. The widget locker isn't exactly the solution I had in mind so I guess I'll just use a shorter notification ringtone and remember to put my phone on vibrate before going to bed. :)

Sounds like what you need is set profile for sleep and work. JuiceDefender has a night mode that will put the phone in airplane or silent mode during a specified timeframe.
