Root [Guide] How to root the Wildfire S with S-ON

Would like to do this on my wildfire but i use the phone as my internet connection. Could you poss let me know what i would need to download beforehand as i assume i would lose my connection until rooted. Many thanks. steve :flybye:

If that's the case, some people have completely skipped that step and proceeded to the next procedure. I suggest you should try although I personnally haven't tried so can't guarantee that it will work.

Tried it, but got:

(bootloader) [ERR] Command error !!!
OKAY [ 0.009s]
finished. total time: 0.009s
in the cmd.

So i followed this guide all the way through, and it says ***UNLOCKED*** at the top of the HBOOT menu, with HHBOOT being 1.09.0099.
So continued through the tutorial, and surely enough, using the supertool V3 it said that my phone was rooted, so i installed SuperSU which told me that there was no Binary. I also installed ROM Manager, which told me my phone wasn't rooted.. any thoughts??

Hey Congrats on becoming a guide Cafe!
Thanks :D

Try rebooting the phone again. If that doesn't get it, run the supertool again and reboot. Let me know if it still won't root.

OK so I was able to root my phone but now the battery is draining super fast. It's only lasting about 20 hours now, and I have the exact same apps installed as before the root. Any ideas?

Yes. The batterystats.bin file got deleted in the unlock process and it will take a couple weeks to get back to full use. Be sure to fully drain it a couple times, but don't do that often as it's hard on the battery.

Your phone is CDMA (no sim card) and probably a MetroPCS or Virgin Mobile device, right? The easiest way to root your phone is to get s-off instead of unlocking the bootloader. Try this:

1. Get s-off by using only the s-off section of this tutorial:
[Tutorial] How to root CDMA wildfire s and s-off and other great tutorials - xda-developers

2. Come back to this rooting guide and follow the directions before step 1 to get htc's USB drivers, Java runtime and Android SDK tool installed on your PC.

3. Run steps 4 and 5 to root the phone and install the custom recovery.

Remember at all times that you have a CDMA phone which is also called MarvelC (as opposed to Marvel) or A510c. Do not flash stuff meant for Marvel/GSM/A510e to your device.

Post back here if you run into trouble.

Hello...

I am back again I was just wondering if there's any problem to just use ES File Explorer to delete the apps I do not want and not install any custom ROM?

What I would get from downloading a custom ROM?
My initial problem was just because I did not had any internal memory left and could not download even system updates. Since I could not download a custom ROM that works on my phone can I just use it like that???

Thanks
Debora

I gave it another try and instead of installing the universal ROM I instelled this one <Stock 2.3.4, Sense 2.1[Rooted][Apps2sd][Virgin Mobile US]- Only for marvelc 510c> but the inatllation process was very different didn't ask what I wanted to install or anything just said it was installed and when I turn the phone on seems just like the one I had before same interface all the HTC apps installed just like the one that came with the phone. Anyone knows if this is a new ROM at all???
This is the link from where I downloaded: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367701

I tried to use ES File Explorer to uninstall some of the apps I don't want and it also doesn't work. Just uninstall the updates and that's exactly what I had before. How can I open some space and completely delete these apps???

Sorry for the noob questions....but I am hoping I can get my phone all fixed!

Thanks again!

Debora

Debora, welcome back!

That ROM is fine, and also posted here at Android Forums by the way.
http://androidforums.com/wildfire-s...2-1-rooted-apps2sd-metropcs-only-marvelc.html

It's a modified stock sense ROM so it will look and feel the same. But it's rooted, has more available memory and works with Link2SD which is a huge memory saver. Set up is a little complicated, but well worth it. See post 385 (step 1) above for more.

To uninstall apps you don't want, use Titanium Backup to backup and uninstall. I'm also assuming that you've done a nandroid backup in Recovery per my guide and Insink71's directions. Feel free to uninstall stuff like Facebook and Plurk, but avoid anything related to Sense or operation of the ROM. If the device becomes unstable, you can restore individual apps with Titanium or the whole ROM in Recovery.

Let us know if you have any more questions.

android version 2.3.4
htc sense version 2.1
software number 3.01.652.1 710RD

sorry if i am asking questions that have already been asked i am a new to the rooting scene and would greatly appreciate the help and knowledge of the ppl here

Caro,
He can't because he has MarvelC (hence 2.3.4) and 2.3.5 is only for Marvel.

rionthywikidkl,
Welcome to Android Forums! More later in a couple hours when I get back. Maybe Caro can point you in the right direction with s-off then root from a previous post.

My bad, I was not aware that you can't update if you are MarvelC.

rionthywikidkl, there are 2 ways to root your phone: 1 is to unlock your bootloader and
2 is to obtain S-off.

The best way is to gain S-off and root your phone by creating a goldcard because a lot of people have had an issue trying to unlock the bootloader
This guide here will be able to help you:
http://androidforums.com/wildfire-s...-roms-team-marvelusc-everything-you-need.html

Once your phone is rooted, I strongly suggest you install Custom Recover (the guide should also tell you how to do it) and perform a nandroid backup which basically backs up your whole software. This way, if anything happens, you can simply just apply the back up you've made.

At the end of the guide, Simon has put a tutorial on installing Link2SD. I suggest you also try that one out. It will save you a lot of internal space!!

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

@Cafekampuchia, how did you know he had marvelc? He didn't mention it anywhere? I'm probably missing some big clue here:confused:

Great work mate!

The links in that thread are now broken. Here is a mirror thread that still works:
[Tutorial] How to root CDMA wildfire s and s-off and other great tutorials - xda-developers

As Caro says use the s-off step in that guide then come back here to root and install ClockworkMod Recovery in steps 4 and 5 of this one.

At the end of the guide, Simon has put a tutorial on installing Link2SD. I suggest you also try that one out. It will save you a lot of internal space!!
+1

@Cafekampuchia, how did you know he had marvelc? He didn't mention it anywhere? I'm probably missing some big clue here:confused:
Because only MarvelC got 2.3.4 and the title of his post mentions Virgin Mobile which is CDMA only = MarvelC ;)

Hello....

I am glad that worked!!! =)
My phone seems much faster as well. I was wondering if it is necessary to partition my SD Card?? I currently only have a 2GB SD Card and on that posts says I have to make "a 1GB Link2SD EXT4 partition and 512MB Linux swap partition ". Do you think is worth doing it or can I just use like that? I don't know if I would need a SD Card with more space??

Also I was wondering if I can delete the stock ROM .zip file that is currently on my SD Card since that is already installed on my phone or do I have to keep it?

I did a recovery backup before I installed this stock ROM so in case everything goes wrong I can use that, but I will do

Currently this is the memory space I have system ROM: 275 (0MB Free) internal: 157MB (88.4MB Free) SD Card: 1.97GB (584MB free). To backup everything with Titanium I have to do one application at a time??? Or I just backup apps I plan on deleting and then if something goes wrong I can restore just that app I deleted???

Thanks so much again!!! You are great CafeCampuchia!!!

Debora

As you mention in Step 4
Note:
this will only work if your phone's bootloader is successfully unlocked (you see ***_UNLOCKED_*** on your HBOOT screen) or you happen to have an S-ON phone.
So,
I have an S-ON phone so do I need to unlock Bootloader ? I mean do I need step 3 in order to root my HTC wildfire S A510e ?
Thanks 👍
