Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

I am having trouble partitioning my sd card to work as internal memory. My sd card will show less space but my internal memory has not changed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for this write up. I am new to the android world and thanks to you, I sucessfully rooted my first phone!

Go into terminal emulator and type df and post your screen shot

I figured it out.

Data
I just want to extend my internal memory.

Well actually, both extend your memory. They just do it in different ways.
Data mode only needs one sdext (partition on sdcard) and uses it as a replacement for the 160mb of internal data that the phone came with. so when you look in menu> settings> storage It shows the "internal memory" of the sdext that is being used.
Ssm uses 2 sdext. One for your apps ( /data/app) and j one for your dalvik cache (/data/dalvik)
The rest of /data (your settings, your text messages, everything that isn't an app or your dalvik cache) goes on the 160mb if space that the phone came with. So since not all of /data is on your sd card, Android can not see the Super Secret space where your apps and dalvik are stored, so it shows an incorrect number.

You can see the correct numbers using the terminal emulator and the df command. If your card is partitioned right right ssm will show a listing for /data, /data/app, and /data/dalvik.

Long story short
Data mode- [<vfat><ext4>]
Ssm mode- [<vfat><ext4><ext4>]

Both can be done either with adb or in cwm.

Awesome....followed this step by step a few weeks ago, and was successful. Thumbs up to all the devs for this one. Now, I hope my EVO will work just as good when I get it.... :D

Acording to the instructions, when I go to settings/storage it should say my internal memory has increased. I tried both data & ssm and no change has been made. Its still gives me that annoying disk space notification.

Did you create a partition? Did you select data mode in the koumamod settings?
Did you select disable internal storage?
Did you THEN format your sdext in cwm? Then did you reboot? did it then still show low memory? If so do a factory reset. And try again. If it STILL doesn't work, THEN post back here :D

I had everything working good, but then it stopped recognizing my partition, and everytime i try to repartition the sd card it doesnt recognize it anyone know what i could do? oops new here didnt see that having the same partition problem.....did what u said and worked great thanks......is there a difference in performance from ssm and data?

Thank you for this thread!! This was my first attempt to root my phone, but I had been thinking about doing it for weeks. I was scared I was going to mess it up, and amazingly everything went smoothly the first time. Such a relief!! I'm so glad I won't see those annoying messages about lacking space on my phone. :) thank you thank you thank you!!

Now that my root is done and it seems to be working good I have some questions. You should probably know that I am not technologically inclined at all!! I didn't have anyone here to help me, so that says a TON about your ability to communicate directions! (Thanks again)

1- Since this is my first rooted device, I was wondering if there is any way to get the screens to go back to the way they used to be? I liked the set up with the phone handle at the bottom along with the little globe for the internet. Now those are gone, as is the way my menu used to scroll so beautifully... Now I have pages, but the nice scroll thing I had is gone.
2- Also- and here is where my ignorance and age will really show, I had a google search bar on my home screen, that has disappeared and even though I was able to locate my google search widget(?) the bar isn't there. I know it's virtually the same thing, but at my old age, I just like things the way I have adjusted to them.

3- My swype isn't working anymore. I hate the old typing method, how would I get swype capabilities back?

4- background- I can't seem to change this, and while I appreciate the effort of CTMod, I'd like to get the animated background my daughter put on my phone for me. I can't seem to find that either.

basically- I want it to look the way I had it, but I wanted more space for applications. Its frustrating to put things on and take them off, or deny upgrades because of low storage space. I know I am a complete newbie, and were it not for anonymity of the web, I probably wouldn't have posted this, but I just want it to look like it used to, without losing it's new and improved performance capabilities.

Thanks again to all of you! :)

you could go stock rooted with like link to sd or something like that. can't run kouma kernal unless use half ass rom which i know nothing aboutand of course ctmod uses it fine. you cold even use a2sdgui with the stock rooted but updates will still bother you and if use them while rooted they will mess up phone so would have to disable everytime they show up.hope this helps.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.adw.launcher install this, it will do what you ask, just play with the settings

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox this will give you back the search box. Once installed, press and hold the main screen and select widgets, then Google search

for live wallpapers to work, you need the live wallpapers app (not on market) there is a flashable zip here somewhere... I'm not at home atm, i will find it when i do get there if nobody beats me to it. Also (in the mean time) to change the wallpaper, longpress (press and hold) the background on the main screen and select wallpapers

I did some researching on this and saw some other people were having problems using 32gb sd cards. So, I ordered a 16gb class 10 and tried it with that and now it works like a champ.

Well my Prevail is rooted now. I have no clue what's next other than installing apps and probably adw so I can change the look, and wifi tether. :)

Thank you to all...I was scared to do this on my own but it really was easy. :)
