Root How To Root HTC Evo 4G 2.3.5

but I don't want to stay on stock I want to get the MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]) rom. I download the vr swiper onto my sd card right and then go ahead with the actual rom?
Ah, gotcha again, I think you are correct, BUT, I think MigG has the superuser baked into his rom....not sure. The reason I say this, is because when I rooted my boss's phone I followed the same procedure and also flashed the su file.
I then proceeded to Capt Throwback method.
Maybe rxpert can verify this for us.:D

would it be safe to try it the way I said?

Any custom Rom is already going to be rooted unless stated otherwise.

Just do a FULL WIPE manually in recovery and flash to your hearts content

ok awesome so on the link provided for MikG do I download 3.11 full wipe and 3.11 update??
No, just the full wipe, and like rxpert said, wipe everything except sd card, I repeat, do not wipe sd card.
I usually wipe twice, sometimes 3 times. Do you have the instructions to flash Mik? I can provide a link from that site to flash.....

Here's a link...I followed these instructions, skipped step 4 (mik has it's own kernel)..

No, in recovery now...you are pretty much done with bootloader.
Backups, flashing, wiping, fixing/repairing (to a certain extent), will all be done now in recovery.
For now, to get into recovery, you will have to go thru bootloader. I use an app to directly boot my phone into recovery. I'll link that later...don't wanna overload you with too much info.
When in recovery, make your nandroid backup (you'll see that option)...use your volume up/down buttons to navigate and use power button to execute the highlighted option.
At the bottom, it will prompt you yes or no to your request.

and does my phone have to be connected to my computer for this?

No you don't have to, and its not recommended for the stock sd card
I have read before that recommendation, but did not know why.
Is the reasoning behind that recommendation because the stock sd card is not large enough? (stock is 8gb?) or is it because of the class of card (don't know what class the stock card is).

It is because of the class. The stock card is class 2. It is recommended to have a class 6 or higher SD card to partition.

The Class of the SD card is how fast it is able to be written to/read from. Higher classes are faster, and therefore better when you are running parts of your phone off of the sd card. If the SD card is not fast enough you will have sluggish performance.

I did it!!! Thank you guys so much!! The only thing I'm noticing is that it is killing my battery life. Is there any advice or tips for that?

Just give the rom/kernel a couple/3 days to settle in...then see what your battery life is.
Then we will go from there.
Glad you got Mikg flashed...:D

Edit: A useful app you can always use to narrow down battery drain is this https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sImNvbS5hc2tzdmVuLmJldHRlcmJhdHRlcnlzdGF0cyJd
I know it's not free, but is very useful to see what is draining battery.

You always want to give everything a few days to settle in. The battery stats aren't really going to be correct now either so you may want to usr an app like battery calibration to start fresh.
